Abstract

Kakawin Surantaka is an Old Javanese poetic work composed in Bali, depicting a fragment of the Mahabharata during the Pandavas' exile in the forest. The narrative centres on Arjuna, who encounters and triumphs over various adversaries throughout his journey. This study explores the concept of sura (heroism) in the text, as it embodies significant heroic values that remain relevant in fostering patriotism today. Using a qualitative approach, this research employs descriptive analysis and Riffaterre’s semiotic framework, focusing on the matrix, models, and variants within the literary structure. The study identifies key first-level models representing sura, including pĕjah (death), wira (bravery), anugraha (blessing), and śakta (devotion or abandonment). These concepts are then re-actualized through their variants in the text. The findings reveal that sura in Kakawin Surantaka represents a heroic figure characterized by courage, strength, inner harmony, and spiritual blessings. Such a hero must overcome both external and internal adversaries to achieve physical and spiritual fulfilment, ultimately attaining true peace. Through the semiotic analysis of matrix, model, and variant elements, the kakawin conveys a profound moral and spiritual message: true heroism is rooted in perseverance and wisdom, leading to victory in life’s challenges.

Abstract

This study is conducted to examine the three-dimensional aspects and characterization methods in The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. The primary focus is placed on identifying how the main character, Gogol, is portrayed through these dimensions and what methods of characterization are applied to reflect his development. A qualitative descriptive method is used in this research, applying Lajos’s theory of three-dimensional aspects along with Burroway’s concepts of direct and indirect characterization to analyze the narrative data from the novel. Through the analysis, it is revealed that Gogol is portrayed as a character who undergoes a significant transformation throughout the story. In the early stage, he is shown as a 14-year-old who struggles with his identity and feels detached from himself. As the narrative progresses, a rebellious attitude is displayed by Gogol as he distances himself from his Bengali background. In the final stage of his life, after experiencing personal loss and emotional challenges, he undergoes a more profound reflection, leading to a greater appreciation for his cultural heritage. This transformation is portrayed through the use of both direct and indirect characterization methods, by which the emotional and cultural journey of an immigrant character is effectively conveyed.

Abstract

This study investigates language contestation in the linguistic landscape of Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK), a cultural tourism destination in Bali that serves both local and international visitors. The research aims to identify the types of signs in GWK and to analyze how Balinese, Indonesian, and English are represented and contested. Using a descriptive qualitative method with observation and photography, 168 signs were documented across three zones: Street Theatre (71), Kencana Souvenir (51), and Commercial Strip (46) during May–June 2025. The findings show that commercial signs (37.5%) and notice signs (36.3%) dominate, followed by name signs (19%) and mixed signs (7.1%). English is the most visible language, appearing in 43.5% of monolingual signs and frequently in bilingual Indonesian–English signs (41.7%). Indonesian is mainly used in regulatory signs, while Balinese functions symbolically with minimal monolingual presence. Zone-based variations reveal that Kencana Souvenir is strongly English-dominant, Commercial Strip highlights Indonesian in regulatory functions, and Street Theatre shows a more balanced distribution. The study concludes that tourism-driven commercialization shapes linguistic hierarchies and calls for signage policies that strengthen the visibility of local language and cultural identity.
