Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of English teaching for students with reading disabilities within an inclusive classroom at one school in East Bali. Employing a case study design, the research aims to explore the teaching procedures, challenges encountered by the teacher, and strategies employed to address these challenges when instructing students with reading disabilities. The subject of this study is an English teacher responsible for class 8A, which includes a student with a reading disability. As the sole participant, the teacher serves as both the population and the sample. Data were collected through classroom observations and in-depth interviews with the teacher, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s Interactive Model of Qualitative Data Analysis. The findings reveal that English teaching in the inclusive classroom follows three main stages: pre-activity, while-activity, and post-activity. Key challenges identified include managing students with reading disabilities, handling a large class size, and coping with limited resources. To overcome these challenges, the teacher employs various strategies such as the use of the bilingual method, reading aloud, and giving positive reinforcement. This study enhances theoretical understanding of English language teaching for students with reading disabilities in inclusive settings and offers practical insights for educators to effectively support diverse learners. The findings have important implications for improving instructional practices in inclusive education, particularly in resource-constrained contexts, and provide a foundation for teacher training programs aimed at fostering equitable language learning opportunities for all students.

Abstract

Recent research indicates that generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) such as ChatGPT has great potentials to support English as a foreign language (EFL) preservice teachers (PSTs) to develop their technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) during their studies in teacher education programs (TEPs). How these PSTs view academic integrity while using GenAI and apply it for TPACK development are still unknown. Looking at the above gaps, this study aimed at exploring how EFL PSTs use GenAI to develop their TPACK and perceived academic integrity. This study recruited eight EFL PSTs in an Indonesian public education university using a basic qualitative methodology. This study employed semi-structured interviews and researchers’ notes to collect the data. The data in this work was analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. The results revealed that participants used AI for language skill development and for content creation as well as task assistance. The results also showed that they knew the potential risks of GenAI on academic integrity, had their own strategies for maintaining academic integrity when using GenAI, and had good impressions of academic integrity in AI-assisted learning. This study drew several theoretical and practical implications to support the application of GenAI in TEPs.

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of integrating YouTube into a flipped classroom model to improve students’ listening skills at SMAN 1 Seririt. The aim was to determine whether this strategy significantly improved students’ listening comprehension compared to conventional teaching. This study was motivated by the observed challenges that students faced in comprehending English listening materials using traditional teaching methods. The focus of this study was on the implementation of the flipped classroom approach, where students watched educational videos from YouTube before class, so that class time could be used for interactive and practical activities. Two eleventh-grade classes were selected as the experimental and control groups, using a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental approach. The experimental group received instruction through the flipped classroom method using YouTube videos, while the control group followed traditional instruction. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests assessing listening skills and were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including t-tests. Supported by a medium effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.61), the findings indicated that the experimental group showed statistically significant improvements in listening skills. Thus, integrating YouTube in a flipped classroom setting effectively improved students’ listening comprehension and offered a student-centered, engaging, and flexible learning experience.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the effect of integrating subtitled videos with the flipped classroom method on students' reading comprehension. This is because many Indonesian students still face challenges due to limited vocabulary, poor grammar mastery, and low motivation, even though reading comprehension plays a crucial role in English language acquisition. A quasi-experimental design was used in this study, involving two groups of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Seririt. The two groups were an experimental group treated with subtitled videos using the flipped classroom method and a control group receiving traditional printed text instruction. The findings of this study showed a statistically significant difference in post-test scores between the two groups, with the experimental group being higher than the control group. Thus, the implementation of subtitled videos allows students to access the content repeatedly and engage visually and textually. Meanwhile, the flipped classroom approach increases students' active participation and self-directed learning. These results indicate that combining subtitled videos with flipped classroom instruction effectively improves reading comprehension. Also, these results demonstrate the potential of student-centered, multimedia-enhanced strategies to enrich language learning and offer practical implications for future instructional design.

Abstract

This research explores the development of English e-storybooks integrated with the Emancipated Learning curriculum for first-grade students at SDN 3 Banjar Jawa. Following the Design and Development (D&D) model, specifically the ADDE (Analyze, Design, Development, and Evaluation) framework, the study employs a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. The research addresses the dearth of supplementary materials and the limited use of e-storybooks in the context of Emancipated Learning. The process involves a systematic analysis of needs, the design of a comprehensive blueprint, the development of e-storybooks, and an evaluation based on expert judgment, teacher assessments, and student feedback. The results indicate that the developed e-storybooks align with curriculum objectives and exhibit excellence in material development principles. The findings emphasize the potential of e-storybooks in enhancing language skills and supporting 21st-century learning principles. The research contributes valuable insights for educators, researchers, and curriculum developers interested in creating effective digital resources tailored to specific educational contexts.

Abstract

This study aimed at developing additional materials for digital English textbooks that are differentiated according to the Merdeka curriculum for fifth-grade students in Denpasar schools. By following the D&D method which uses the ADDE (analysis, Design, Development and Evaluation) model from Richey Klein (2014), the data in this study were analyzed using a mixed method, namely quantitative and qualitative analysis. This study explains the defiance presented in the manual so that additional materials are developed based on student needs. The research process begins with analyzing the textbook then compiling a blueprint that will be used in designing additional materials then developing the materials through the Canva application and evaluating those provided by experts and teachers related to additional digital materials. The results show that the material is very effective and suitable for use in fifth-grade elementary schools because the material is in accordance with the students' learning styles. This study was conducted to provide information to educators, researchers in developing differentiated materials according to the Emancipated curriculum and the needs desired by students in the learning process in the classroom through digital media.
