Abstract

Mathematics learning in elementary schools is still dominated by conventional methods that do not foster the development of critical thinking skills. This challenge is relevant to 21st-century learning and the Independent Curriculum, which demands the integration of technology and high-level thinking skills. This research aims to analyze the effect of Brain-Based Learning (BBL) supported by PhET Simulations on the critical thinking abilities of fifth-grade students in Magelang City. The research approach uses a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group. The research instrument is an essay test to measure critical thinking abilities. The results of the analysis show that the BBL model assisted by PhET Simulation provides a significant improvement in critical thinking abilities. Data testing uses the t-test and N-Gain to prove the hypothesis. The t-test produces a significance value of 0.00 < 0.05, indicating a significant effect of using BBL assisted by the PhET Simulation. This finding is strengthened by the average N-Gain value of 0.5002, which falls within the medium category, indicating that brain-based work learning is quite effective in improving students' critical thinking abilities. Integration of BBL and PhET Simulations proved effective in supporting 21st-century skills. Implementing this model can provide learning experiences that support optimal brain function through technology, making it relevant for developing 21st-century skills.

Abstract

This study examines the levels of fiction text comprehension among fourth-grade primary school students in Surakarta, Indonesia, using Barrett’s Taxonomy as the analytical framework. A descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design was employed, and data were collected through reading comprehension tests, classroom observations, and interviews with students and teachers. The five levels of comprehension literal, reorganization, inferential, evaluative, and appreciative were assessed to map the range of students’ reading abilities. The findings show notable variation across comprehension levels. Literal comprehension achieved the highest score (91.35%, high category), indicating strong ability to recall explicit information. In contrast, reorganization (40.73%) and inferential comprehension (43.20%) were categorized as low, suggesting difficulties in synthesizing information and interpreting implicit meaning. Evaluative comprehension was moderate (69.13%), while appreciative comprehension received the lowest score (35.79%), reflecting limited engagement with the emotional and aesthetic qualities of the text. Overall, the results indicate that although students demonstrate strong surface-level understanding, their higher-order cognitive and affective comprehension skills are underdeveloped. The study recommends instructional practices that extend beyond factual recall by fostering critical interpretation, reflective judgment, and deeper engagement with literary texts. The implications for curriculum design and classroom instruction are outlined to address these specific gaps in comprehension.

Abstract

This study explores contemporary patterns of cultural transmission of gamelan among children in Surakarta through the interconnection between formal school learning and community-based learning. Using an ethnopedagogical perspective grounded in Social Learning Theory (Bandura, 1986), the research examines how observation, imitation, modeling, and reinforcement function as interconnected processes in karawitan education. Data were collected through an ethnographic approach that included interviews, observations, and visual documentation by observing extracurricular practices and gamelan learning activities in elementary school programs in Surakarta. The findings show that gamelan learning functions not only as musical instruction but also as a moral enculturation process, where collective practices cultivate social values such as rukun (harmony), gotong royong (cooperation), and tata krama (cultural respect). These findings affirm that the sustainability of Javanese musical heritage depends on active collaboration between schools and local communities, which transforms traditional music into a living pedagogical medium. Integrating traditional arts into formal education can foster mindful, meaningful, and joyful learning, a culturally grounded approach that blends skills, empathy, and collective happiness.

Abstract

Sustainable development as part of Natural Resource conservation needs to be implemented properly, one of which is through the ecoliteracy movement, so that students are expected to have a good understanding of the environment. This community service activity aims to develop ecoliteracy-oriented learning. This mentoring activity was carried out at Wonorejo 1 Public Elementary School, Kebumen Regency. The subjects in this mentoring activity included the principal, teachers, and school supervisors. Mentoring and training were used in this community service model. This mentoring was implemented in three main stages, namely the mass teaching method, the group teaching method, and the individual teaching method. The activity procedures included fulfilling partnerships, training on the implementation of ecoliteracy-oriented learning, and the implementation of ecoliteracy-oriented learning in upper and lower grades. The findings showed that the ecoliteracy-oriented learning process was implemented smoothly through the In, On, and In scheme. Ecoliteracy-oriented learning produces (1) a quality learning process, characterized by a variety of enjoyable learning activities and continuously developing ecoliteracy competencies, and (2) mentoring activities have an impact on learning activities including increasing student-to-student interactions and student interactions with media as well as increasing ecoliteracy in the head/cognitive, hands/activity, and heart/emotional aspects. Integrating environmental knowledge into formal education, providing direct experience, and fostering empathy and inclusivity. Schools can develop students who are not only environmentally aware but also proactive in implementing sustainable practices.

Abstract

Improving the calibre of teaching and learning in elementary education and raising teacher professionalism depend critically on academic supervision. Still, its actual application is usually administrative and hasn't worked effectively as a tool for professional development. This study examines the contextual variables that affect these practices as well as compares how public and private elementary schools apply academic monitoring. Qualitative technique using a comparative case study design gathered data by means of interviews, observations, and documents including school supervisors, instructors, and principals. Strict bureaucratic demands suggest that in public schools supervision is typically formalistic and geared toward administrative compliance, which reduces its influence on teacher growth. By contrast, private schools usually use more flexible, interactive, and ongoing supervisory techniques. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the need of a contextual, cooperative, and reflective supervisory strategy to successfully support teacher growth and improve learning quality
