Abstract

This study examines person deixis in Michael Learns to Rock’s 1999 soft rock ballad Out of the Blue. While prior research has explored deixis in speeches, religious discourse, and talk shows, its role in song lyrics particularly emotional ballads remains underexplored. The song’s official lyrics served as the data source. Using Levinson’s (1983) typology for classification and Halliday and Hasan’s (1985) context of situation for interpretation, the research employed a qualitative approach involving careful listening, close reading, and systematic note-taking. The analysis revealed 38 instances of person deixis, primarily singular first- and second-person pronouns, with no plural or third-person forms. This distribution reflects the song’s intimate, direct communication and emphasis on personal emotions. Findings indicate that in lyrical contexts, person deixis enhances emotional closeness, fosters a direct connection between singer and listener, and shapes narrative perspective. The study demonstrates that deixis functions not only grammatically but also artistically, contributing to emotional impact and audience engagement. These insights expand understanding of deixis in non-traditional discourse and suggest its potential value in linguistic, literary, and musicological studies, as well as in language teaching using authentic song materials.

Abstract

The study concerned with the code mixing found in Travel Secrets Video YouTube Channel Episode 40. The study aims to identify the types of code mixing found on Travel Secrets Video YouTube Channel Episode 40 as well as to describe the reason of code mixing found on Travel Secrets Video YouTube Channel Episode 40. The data were taken from Travel Secrets Video YouTube Channel Episode 40 on the video “Penjelasan Boy William Dua Kali Gagal Menikah” by applying the theory types of code mixing by Hoffman (1991) and reasons of code mixing by Hoffman (1991). The analysis was done by applying descriptive qualitative and quantitative method with observation method and noted taking technique to collect the data. This study shows that there are three types of code mixing found and three reasons of code mixing found. The study concludes that intra-sentential code mixing is the most frequently used in types of code mixing and talking about particular topic is the most frequently used in reasons of code mixing. By doing code mixing, it is easier to build a sense of solidarity between the host and the guest rather than using only one language and making the conversation more attractive.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the types of flouting maxims that occur in the utterances of the characters in Aladdin movie. The data were analyzed by using the theory proposed by Cutting (2002). In analyzing the data, the method that was used in this study was by using a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by downloading the movie and the script. The result of this study showed that four types of flouting maxim were performed by the characters in Aladdin Movie, those are flouting maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of quality, flouting maxim of relevance and flouting maxim of manner.

Abstract

This study discusses about women’s language features that occur in the utterance of the main character from the Falling Inn Love movie. The aim of this study was to analyze women’s language features and the function of each feature that are used by the main character or Gabriela through the utterance by applying the main theory by Lakoff (1975) and Pearson (1985). In conducting the data, this study was using the descriptive qualitative method to organize the description of the data result. In presenting the data this study was using formal and informal methods. It was found nine out of ten features were used by the main character. The most feature that occurs in the main character utterance was lexical hedges or filler (25%) while the least feature that occurs in the dialogue was emphatic stress and hypercorrect grammar (2, 50%). Almost all the features by Lakoff (1975) are found in this movie except precise colour terms.

Abstract

This study concerns with the term of semiotics that is aimed at describing the verbal and visual signs as well as analyzing the functions and meaning of signs. The data of this study were taken from popular memes in 2020 on Pinterest or www.pinterest.com. The data were collected by observation method. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive qualitative method. Furthermore, the data were presented by formal and informal methods. There were three theories applied. The theory of semiotic was proposed by Saussure (1983), the theory of meaning was proposed by Barthes (1997). In addition, the theory of color was driven by Wierzbicka (1996). The result of this study showed that there were 6 verbal signs and 8 visual signs based on 3 data used in total. The visual signs are the most sign used on each meme. The purpose is to attract people on the internet when communicating with friends and shared for humorous purpose because it also conveys someone’s idea.

Abstract

Artikel ini mengulas keterlibatan masyarakat Desa Wisata Jatiluwih dalam merumusan paket wisata sebagai salah satu strategi untuk mengoptimalkan potensi Desa Jatiluwih. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kendala yang dihadapi dalam meningkatkan kunjungan wisatawan ke Desa Jatiluwih pasca pandemi COVID-19 yang dinilai cenderung lambat jika dibandingkan dengan desa wisata lainnya yang ada di Bali, seperti Desa Wisata Panglipuran dan Ubud dari tahun 2022 hingga awal tahun 2023. Berdasar pada hasil wawancara awal kepada pelaku pariwisata serta identifikasi mendalam melalui observasi langsung ke lapangan, ditemukan bahwa rendahnya visibilitas informasi di media digital dan sosial menjadi perhatian utama dalam menjawab permasalahan tersebut. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan pengabdian ini dirancang untuk memberikan dukungan kepada masyarakat dalam mengidentifikasi peluang baru serta memenuhi kebutuhan masyarakat guna mengembangkan strategi pemasaran yang adaptif dan inovatif. Pelatihan dan pendampingan peserta kegiatan dilakukan secara interaktif selama pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian dengan mempertimbangkan kebutuhan berdasar pada hasil identifikasi awal. Peserta tidak hanya mengikuti seminar, namun juga terlibat dalam diskusi dan praktek langsung dalam merancang paket wisata yang dituangkan dalam brosur wisata berbahasa Inggris. Keberhasilan kegiatan pengabdian tercermin pada meningkatnya visibilitas Desa Jatiluwih pada media digital dan sosial yang mampu meningkatkan kunjungan wisatawan sejak bulan Agustus 2023.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the verbal and non-verbal signs and to figure out the meaning of verbal and non-verbal signs in Scream movie posters. An observation method was used to collect the data. The data were taken from two Scream movie posters downloaded from https://m.imdb.com. The method used is a qualitative approach. To analyze verbal and non-verbal signs, researchers used Saussure's semiotic theory, while to analyze the meaning, researchers used the theories of Barthes and Cerrato. As a result, the researchers found eight verbal and five non-verbal signs in these Scream movie posters. The creator's message is usually conveyed implicitly, requiring the viewers to interpret the meaning of the movie posters. The presence of both verbal and non-verbal signs in the movie poster serves to highlight the creator's message to the audience. Furthermore, a movie poster tends to promote a movie, provide information, and persuade the audience to watch the movie.

Abstract

This research presents a description of the speech act. This research identifies the types of illocutionary acts used by the main characters. This research uses a qualitative method—the data obtained from the Alladin movie. The analysis was presented in a formal and informal presentation. Several steps were taken to analyze the data. First, the researcher watches the movie from beginning to end. Second, the researcher takes note of the illocutionary act in the conversation. The last one is the researcher classifying the data based on the types of illocutionary acts. As a result, five illocutionary acts were discovered in the utterances of the main characters in Alladin’s movie. Those are declarative, representative, expressive, directive, commissive. The researcher found five types: directive 3 data or 23%, expressive 3 data or 23%, representative 2 data or 15%, commissive 1 data or 8%, and declarative 4 data or 31% used in the Alladin movie. The most frequent type used was declarative.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian Masyarakat ini menyasar kelompok pendukung Air Susu Ibu di Wilayah Desa Munggu, Permasalahan Ibu-ibu menyusui di Desa Munggu menjadi prioritas kegiatan pengabdian ini, diantaranya: kurangnya edukasi terkait pentingnya ASI eksklusif pada ibu-ibu menyusui,banyaknya ibu-ibu yang memberikan susu formula kepada bayinya sebagai pengganti ASI. Setelah dilakukan observasi dan perencanaan kegiatan serta menampung aspirasi dan keluhan masyarakat, solusi yang diberikan adalah promosi kesehatan KPASI, yang dijabarkan sebagai berikut : memberikan sosialisasi pentingnya pemberian ASI eksklusif oleh Ibu kepada bayi hingga usia 2 tahun. Memberikan penyuluhan KPASI (Kelompok Pendukung Air Susu Ibu) kepada Masyarakat di Wilayah Desa Munggu. Memberikan penyuluhan tahapan pembentukan KPASI kepada Masyarakat di Wilayah Desa Munggu. Kegiatan ini berlangsung karena adanya dukungan banyak pihak serta kerjasama yang selaras antara tim, mitra serta narasumbe. Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini telah selesai dilakukan dan memberikan hasil maksimal.

Abstract

This study examine expressive illocutionary actions Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse are main subject of this study. Aim of this research is to categorise the forms of expressive illocutionaries. actions in the speech and the situation's context in the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse movie. The researcher used Halliday and Hassan's (1985) situational context and Searle's (1979) categorization theory of illocutionary actions in this investigation. This research uses a descriptive-qualitative technique to analyse the data. given that the findings may take the form of words or phrases. Using the data source from this study, the researcher successfully classified five distinct expressive illocutionary acts. According to this study's findings, every character in the movie made 25 utterances that demonstrated expressive speech actions. We categorize ten statements as indicative of gratitude, five as evocative of compliments, four as apologetic, two as expressive of complaint, and four as expressive of protest. This movie's expression of gratitude is the most prominent.
