Abstract

Rancangan percobaan berupa Rancangan Acak Lengkap.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the declining population of Timor deer (Rusa timorensis) has led the Indonesian government to designate them as a protected species. Captive breeding has become an effort to conserve Timor deer, and daily behavior serves as a measure of the success of the breeding program. The objective of this research was to evaluate the daily behavior patterns of Timor deer fawns, including movement, feeding, resting, social, alert, eliminative, and grooming behavior at the CV. Bahtera Satwa Breeding Center. Data collection for the research was conducted over 14 days using the scan sampling method. The results showed significant differences (p<0.05) in movement behavior, feeding, resting, social, and eliminative behavior between morning, afternoon, and evening. The frequency of social behavior in deer fawn was observed more often than in other behaviors, while the duration of resting activities was higher compared to other activities. The conclusion of this study was that the daily behavior patterns of Timor deer fawns, consisting of social and resting behaviors, were consistently performed in the morning and afternoon. The social behavior exhibited by the fawns was an effort to interact and explore their environment, while resting behavior was used to avoid heat and recover energy after morning activities.

Abstract

Animal behavior is a directed activity resulting from environmental stimuli involving the coordination of the nervous, endocrine and muscular systems. The presence of visitors at the zoo, whether on weekdays or weekends, can significantly impact animal behavior. Deer avoid contact with humans, but conditions at the zoo, which differ from the wild, require deer to be able to interact with humans. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the behavioral responses of Timor deer (Rusa timorensis) fawns to the presence of visitors on weekdays and weekends in the ex-situ conservation area of Semarang Zoo of Central Java, Indonesia. The behavioral responses observed included aggressive, locomotor, eliminative, self-grooming, resting, feeding and social behaviors. This study was conducted over 21 days by observing the behavior of nine Timor deer fawns, consisting of six females and three males, that were still suckling their does. The observation method used was scan-sampling, which was conducted in the morning, noon and afternoon, with a two-hour observation interval. The data obtained were analyzed using a t-test. The presence of visitors on weekdays and weekends had no effect (p>0.05) on all observed behavioral parameters of Timor deer fawns. However, the percentage of locomotion, eating, self-care, social and elimination behaviors was higher in the morning with a longer duration, while the percentage of rest was longer in the afternoon. This study concluded that the behavioral responses of Timor deer fawns at the ex-situ conservation area to visitors were consistent on both weekdays and weekends. The Timor deer were accustomed to the presence of visitors, allowing them to exhibit their natural behavior still.

Abstract

Using appropriate bedding can enhance the welfare of beef cattle. This study was designed to evaluate the daily behavior of beef cattle kept on different types of bedding. Field research was conducted over a period of two months, using eight beef cattle, which were divided into two groups based on the type of bedding used, namely straw and rubber mats. The daily behaviors observed were the duration and frequency of eating, aggressive behavior, lying down, sleeping, standing, and elimination. The observation used was an intermittent method. The first group consisted of a pen block with straw bedding, and the second group consisted of a pen block with carpet bedding. Data analysis used the t-test and analysis of variance at a significance level of 5%. The results showed that all parameters did not reveal any differences; however, sleeping behavior was higher (P < 0.05) in the straw-bedded pens, with the highest percentage of sleep occurring in the afternoon. This study concluded that both straw and rubber carpet bedding are still capable of supporting the normal expression of the main daily behaviors of cows. Both types of bedding are still suitable for use in beef cattle husbandry systems.
