Abstract

There are still many students who do not like reading. Students feel that reading is a tiring activity, so students rarely have the intention to read. Students feel bored when reading and make students fast. This is the main reason why students do not like to read. This study aims to analyse the effectiveness of using e-mind maps in online reading learning based on Think-Pair-Share on the reading comprehension of Indonesian EFL students. This research is a pre-experimental study with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consists of 32 class students. The techniques used to collect data are observation and interviews. Data were collected through pretest and posttest and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics assisted by SPSS version 24. The results showed that the average posttest score of students was 91.13, which was higher than the average student pretest score of 75.72, and there were significant differences. The important difference between the mean pretest and posttest scores (Sig. (two-sided) was .000 < .05). Therefore, it can be said that the e-mind map in online reading learning based on Think-Pair-Share has a positive and significant effect on the reading comprehension of Indonesian EFL students. The research implication is that teachers can use e-mind map integration in online Think-Pair-Share settings. The application of e-mind in online Think-Pair-Share settings can facilitate students in learning and create a pleasant learning atmosphere so as to improve students’ reading comprehension, especially in learning English skills such as speaking, listening, and writing.

Abstract

The pandemic of COVID-19 has led to remote learning which requires teachers to be creative in presenting and delivering the learning materials. Online learning platforms are needed to connect students and retain their attention and motivation in learning, whereas the choice of the platforms is strongly tied to the teachers’ perception. Therefore, this study aimed to analyse the use of Kahoot for young learners and the teacher’ perception towards its implementation in remote learning context. It was because Kahoot was reported to have a significant and direct positive effect on the students’ learning outcomes and studies related to its use for young learners were still limited. This was a qualitative study that was conducted by taking an English teacher as a subject. The data were collected through observation, interview, and questionnaire. The results showed that the implementation of Kahoot for young learners was carried out synchronously in two sessions with two different materials for one meeting. The first session was used for academic quiz while the second session was intented for fun activity, discussing general knowledge about the world, such as asking about the name of the character in a cartoon, answering riddles, and so on. The results also indicated that the teacher also had positive perception towards the implementation of Kahoot in remote learning.

Abstract

Language teaching needs to use media and models that help student learning activities. And task-based learning is a learning model that has been widely applied in schools but does not yet have the appropriate criteria for this model in facilitating literacy activities. The role of creative and innovative learning media is also very important in increasing student motivation in literacy activities based on TBLT. This research aims to analyze the needs of students as initial stage to develop a TBLT-based digital story book to promote student literacy activities in 7th grade students. This study uses the Design & Development model by Richey & Klein as a research methodology. There are four stages in this method carried out by researchers namely, Analysis, Design, Development, and Evaluation. In collecting data, several instruments used were syllabus analysis, interview guides, observations, questionnaires, blueprints, and assessment rubrics. The results show that TBLT-based digital storybooks help teachers and students in the learning process and literacy activities as innovative media and provide motivation to be interested in literacy.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the multimodal communication of waiters and waitresses at three restaurants in Tabanan, Bali Province, in applying higher-level actions in serving foreign guests and investigating the functions of the higher-level actions of waiters and waitresses in serving the foreign guests. This study used theories proposed by Fishman (1972) cited in Suandi & Indriani (2016) on functions of using verbal and nonverbal communication, Krees and Van Leewuen 2006) on multimodal communication, and Norris (2004) on higher-level actions. The subjects of this study were four waiters and two waitresses who were working at three different restaurants in Tabanan regency. The results of this study showed that in each conversation, there were many sequences of higher-level actions used by waiters or waitresses to serve the foreign guests. The waiters and waitresses used a sequence of modes alternately or simultaneously in their higher-level actions, depending on the situation. The functions of waiters or waitresses’ higher-level actions in serving foreign guests made their messages clearer to foreign guests, and this made the waiters or waitresses’ messages more believable to the foreign guests.

Abstract

Abstract

One of the impacts of globalization is the amount of waste that damages the environment. One of the Balinese local wisdoms that can serve as a guideline for protecting the environment is the concept of Palemahan. In some studies, the value of Palemahan has been shown to enhance students' environmental care attitudes. To make it more interesting, Palemahan can be taught through novels. This study analyses the internalisation of Palemahan values reflected in the non-human protagonist characters in the book The Twits by Roald Dahl. Using the qualitative approach of Miles, et al., (2014), this study identifies how animals, such as the Muggle-Wump monkey and birds, practice key aspects of Palemahan values. The results showed that Roly Poly implemented the value of helping other animals four times, educating other animals once, and collaborating with other animals twice. At the same time, the Muggle Wump character embodies Palemahan values by longing for a harmonious habitat, showing sympathy for other animals, and occasionally helping them. This study found that The Twits contains Palemahan values that students can learn. This education guides teachers to integrate Palemahan local wisdom values through the novel The Twits, aiming to improve students' environmental awareness and develop innovative, relevant teaching materials.
