Abstract

This research aims to identify taboo words, taboo forms, and their taboo references This study was designed in the form of  a descriptive qualitative research which involved two types of data: primary and secondary. The researchers acted as the main instuments in this study. The other instrument interview guide, smartphone, and notebook. The source of data were the 3 informants selected based on a set of criteria. The identified data were analyzed as follows: the data of taboo words were analyzed into 3 domains  in the concept of Tri Hita Karana. The data related to  taboo form were analyzed using Frazer’s (1955) and Montagu’s theory (1973), and the data related  to  their referances of taboo words were  analyzed using Frazer’s (1955) theory.The results of this study show  that there were 44 taboo words were found and connected to the three domains of Tri Hita Karana concept. 3 related Parahyangan, 37 related to Pawongan, and 5 related to Palemahan. The 40 among  44 taboo words were classified into swearing words. 4 among the 44 taboo words identified were classified into taboo names . From the 44 taboo words were  found 11 types of refrences: parent’s names (3), animal’s name (4), mentioning genital (5), sexual activity (4), wisdom of ruler (1), bodily function (6),  nature (1), illness (9), name of spirit (1), personal pronouns (5), and  spesific activity (5), were found..

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of Quizlet's implementation on students’ basic English literacy skills in ninth-grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Abiansemal in the academic year 2024/2025. It uses a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental post-test-only control group design. Cluster random sampling was applied to this study, with 58 students from two ninth-grade classes divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group was given a treatment with Quizlet in while activity, while the control group used conventional media. At the end of the treatment, both groups were given the post-test. The data was analyzed using an Independent sample t-test. The finding showed that there was a significant effect of Quizlet on students’ basic English literacy in ninth-grade students of SMPN 3 Abiansemal. Students who learn using Quizlet get higher post-test scores than those who use conventional media (Sig. (2-tailed (0.000) < 0.05). In addition, Cohen’s effect was 1.531, which falls into large effect. This concludes that implementing Digital Media in the form of Quizlet can influence students’ basic English literacy. Keywords: Digital Media, Quizlet, English Literacy, Basic English Literacy Skills.

Abstract

This study aims to improve student's vocabulary mastery by using drilling techniques integrated with technology in students of SD Negeri 4 Kaliuntu. This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR). Fourth-grade elementary school students were the subject of this study, with a total of 34 students. The data was obtained using a vocabulary test (pre-test and post-test), which was conducted through two cycles of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The findings showed that the use of drilling techniques integrated with technology through vocabulary video can improve students' vocabulary mastery. It was indicated by the data obtained on the students' vocabulary test, namely in the first cycle student’s who passed the Minimum Mastery Criteria of 70 was 82.35% with the difference from the pre-test to the first cycle post-test was 31.07%. A drastic significant increase occurred in the second cycle with students passing the Minimum Mastery Criteria of 70 was 100%. In addition, the improvement of students' vocabulary mastery also changed through students' opinions about the use of drilling techniques integrated with technology has a significant impact on student's vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This research is a Classroom Action Research. The subjects in this study were fourth grade students of SD Negeri 9 Karangasem, totaling 20 students. The purpose of the research was to improve vocabulary mastery through drilling technique integrated with technology and to identify students' opinions about the implementation. Data collection techniques used vocabulary test and interview. The research procedure includes stages: planning, action, observation and reflection. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that through drilling techniques integrated with technology can improve students' vocabulary mastery. This is evident from the students' scores on the vocabulary test from the pre-test with a score of 61.25 to 78.25 in cycle I and 85 in cycle II with a record of all students exceeding the KKTP. In addition, all students stated that the use of drilling technique integrated with technology was very interesting, motivating and improved vocabulary mastery. Thus, it can be concluded that through drilling technique integrated with technology can improve students' vocabulary mastery in class IV of SD Negeri 9 Karangasem.

Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of the implementation of digital flashcard learning media in improving vocabulary mastery among 8th grade students at SMP Laboratorium Undiksha. The design of this research is quasi-experimental with pre test for both control and experimental group. The sample of this study is two classes with each 26 and 25 students, 51 students in total. The findings revealed a notable improvement in the post test score of experimental group, with the mean score of 81.72 which is higher compared to the post test mean score of the control group which is 72.40. Moreover, independent sample t-test result indicates that the score is statistically significant, further supported by the result of Cohen’s d effect size that demonstrated the strong effect of digital flashcard towards vocabulary mastery. These findings signifies the effectiveness of digital flashcard as an engaging and interactive learning media to address the challenges of vocabulary mastery in English as a foreign language, particularly in the context of urban school with access to adequate technology.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the use of pragmatic approach to enhance students' speaking skills at MA Syamsul Huda Tegallinggah.The focus of this study was on the learning activities of 25 students in class XI B and their speaking test results.Data were collected through various techniques, including observation, interviews, and the assessment of speaking skill test results.The research design used in this study was Classroom Action Research, consisting of two cycles, Cycle I and Cycle II. Based on the results of the action implementation in both cycles, it was found that the pragmatic approach increased student participation in learning. Additionally, it proved to be effective in improving students' speaking skills. In Cycle I, students achieved an average score of 75.52 with a pass rate of 64%, where 19 out of 25 students were declared successful. Meanwhile, in Cycle II, the average score increased to 79.04 with a pass percentage of 84%. In fact, before the implementation, only 14 students or 56% of them were declared successful. The emphasis of the pragmatic approach in this research was on providing opportunities for students to practice using English in its contextual usage. Thus, in the learning process, students not only focused on theory but also engaged in practical language application.

Abstract

AbstractThis qualitative descriptive research investigates the influence of ChatGPT on the professional development of pre-service teachers specializing in English as a Foreign Language (EFL), with a specific focus on pedagogical innovations. The study, conducted using a phenomenological research approach, involved seven participants enrolled in the "Teaching Campus" program at Ganesha University of Education. The primary objective was to explore the experiences of EFL pre-service teachers in utilizing ChatGPT to enhance their professional growth, particularly in the development of pedagogical innovations. The participants reported notable advancements in pedagogical innovations, encompassing enhancements in the preparation of teaching materials, generation of engaging learning ideas, implementation of diverse teaching strategies, formulation of lesson plans, and increased time efficiency. The study concludes that while ChatGPT positively impacts pedagogical creativity, its implementation requires thorough evaluation and adjustments to align with specific teaching contexts and cater to the needs of students, ensuring its effectiveness in fostering the professional growth of pre-service teachers.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop English front office materials for first semester students of class XII at SMK N 2 Singaraja. In the data collection process, researchers used six instruments, namely, Google form for teachers and students, Questionnaire for teachers and front office staff, Checklist for students, and the last instrument is Checklist for expert judges. This research method used the Design and Development (D&D) model. The results showed that there were 5 topics that needed to be developed, namely; Handling guest arrivals and departures, Handling guest baggage, Bell desk service handling requests, Individual guest check-in handling, Individual guest check-out handling. The conclusion obtained in this study is that there are 5 topics that must be developed into products and each topic contains input, content focus, language focus, and task and the product quality is classified as very good based on the results of two expert judges.

Abstract

This study aims to develop English language materials of front office for second semester students of the eleventh grade at SMK N 2 Singaraja. This study adopts the Design and Development (D&D) which is guided by data collection through six instruments, namely questionnaires for teacher and front office staff, Google form for teachers and students, checklist for students, and checklist for expert judges. There are three stages that the researcher takes to complete this study, namely designing, developing, and evaluating the quality of the teaching materials (product) so that it can be categorized as a good material. The result is that there are four topics developed by the researcher, namely (1) Renewal of reservations, (2) Cancellation of reservations, (3) Handling of group reservations orally and in writing, and (4) Handling of individual reservations orally and in writing.

Abstract

This study aimed to improve students’ vocabulary mastery through the implementation of a flipped classroom model assisted by Quizizz. The research employed a Classroom Action Research design conducted in two cycles involving 25 students, with data collected through a pre-test, post-test I, post-test II, and classroom observations. The results showed a gradual improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery, indicated by an increase in the mean score from 71.00 in the pre-test to 73.28 in post-test I and significantly to 85.76 in post-test II. In addition to score improvement, students demonstrated better understanding of word meanings, verb forms, and the use of vocabulary in sentences related to daily activities using the Present Continuous Tense, as well as increased participation and confidence during learning activities. These findings indicate that flipped classroom learning with the aid of Quizizz is an effective instructional strategy for improving students’ vocabulary mastery in English language classrooms.
