Abstract

Bali’s capital city of Denpasar has a number of heritage sites, including several buildings, museums and monuments. These sites have yet to be developed optimally as tourist attractions, as evidenced by their small number of annual visitors. This study explores the potential in reutilizing those cultural heritage sites for the development of heritage tourism, and to support the city government’s tour programme. Two interrelated issues discussed here include how the government of Denpasar preserves its cultural heritage, and how it promotes these sites as heritage tourism. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and a literature review employing heritage tourism theory and framing theory. The study presents two packages of heritage tourism tours with a duration of approximately three hours each: the Denpasar Heritage Track (DHT), which starts and finishes at the Bali Hotel, taking in the Puputan Badung Monument, Bali Museum, Jero Kuta Palace, and Maospait Temple; and the Sanur Heritage Track (SHT), which begins and concludes at the Grand Bali Beach Hotel, visiting the Belanjong Heritage, Intaran Market, Bajra Sandhi Monument, and Museum Le Mayeur. The DHTs are expected to increase the number of tourist attractions in Denpasar, contributing to more tourist visits to Bali, especially in its capital city.

Abstract

The use of space in Bongkasa Pertiwi Village, Badung Regency, Bali underwent several changes after the village was designated as a tourist village. The main purpose of this study is to determine the development of space utilization after the village is designated as a tourist village and the factors that influence the use of space itself. This study uses a qualitative method, where data collection is done by means of observation and interviews, and document review. Village spatial mapping was carried out with the help of the Geographic Information System (GIS) and Google Earth. The study showed that the largest proportion of land use was for tourism facilities consisting of tourist attractions and other supporting facilities such as homestays, hotels, and villas. Furthermore, the factors that also affect the use of space in this village are physiographic, economic, regulatory, policy, and institutional factors. This study provides practical guidelines in spatial planning in the development of tourist villages.

Abstract

Abstract Sumerta Kelod of Kota Denpasar was one of the first designated locations for land consolidation (LC) in Indonesia. This LC was established to create a well-organized settlement. The targeted location was originally fertile paddy fields, which have been turned into residential areas, both well-established communities as well as slums. The objective of this research is therefore to determine the pattern of settlement that occurred in Sumerta Kelod in the aftermath of LC related activities. This study requires both primary and secondary datathat have been collected using combined qualitative and quantitative research methods. A basic fact is that 89.09 percent of paddy fields have been converted into the built up areas required to accommodate residential activities and supporting facilities including commerce and services such as  medical, religious, education and infrastructural development. The rest of 10.91 percent of the area is used for paddy fields, open space and undeveloped land. While the objective of creating a well- organized settlement has been achieved, the LC program has also generated unplanned slums that detract from a positive image of the city. This study determines that several groups of informal housing units are in place, such as Jalan Badak Agung VII, VIII and Jalan Merdeka X. In total, they are about 12,491 m2 in scale. Data also suggests inconsistencies between actual land use, spatial planning and regulation, since for example it is common to see educational and commercial facilities built on areas zoned for housing. As people prefer to access their premises directly from the road, all of these developments are determined by the infrastructure network. Keywords: development, settlement, land consolidation, Denpasar City Abstrak Desa Sumerta Kelod merupakan salah satu lokasi konsolidasi tanah (LC) yang pertama kali diselenggarakan di Indonesia. Abstract

Kata kunci: fasade, bahan bangunan, ketinngian & bentuk bangunan, efisiensi lahan Abstract This study, which takes place along Legian Corridor in Kuta-Bali, is conducted to achieve three main goals. The first is to identify forms of facade exhibited by various structures existing along this Corridor. Second, to evaluate the conformance of buildings. The key legislation here is Local Regulation No 5 year 2005 regarding Building Codes and Architectural Requirements. Third, in the process to investigate inefficiencies in land use based on building heights. So this study focuses on basic building forms, architectural styles, building heights, and the use of building materials. Descriptive qualitative research methods are used, supported with photographic documentation of all the 129 units being surveyed. Research findings demonstrate that 62 % of these building units do not incorporate Balinese architectural elements as is required; 61 % use various fabricated building materials; and 65.8 % of the units are single storey structures. These conditions indicate violations of building codes and regulations enforced across the Island, as well as inefficient land use within the Legian Corridor where land price is relatively very high.
