Abstract

Background: The period of complementary feeding for children aged 6–23 months is a crucial phase for their growth and development. Inappropriate complementary feeding practices, whether in terms of timing, type, portion, or texture, can increase the risk of stunting, malnutrition, and developmental disorders. Maternal employment status is suspected to influence the appropriateness of complementary feeding. Purpose: To determine the relationship between maternal employment and the appropriateness of complementary feeding. Method: This quantitative study used a cross-sectional approach and was conducted in July 2025 in the working area of the 7 Ulu Community Health Center, Palembang, South Sumatra. The sampling technique used purposive sampling with a sample size of 30 participants. The independent variable in this study was maternal employment, while the dependent variable was the provision of complementary feeding. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis with frequency distribution and bivariate analysis with the chi-square test. Results: There was no significant relationship between compliance with complementary feeding and the four variables in this study. This is indicated by the p-values for the variables time (p=0.272), type (p=1.000), portion (p=0.714), and texture (p=1.000), all of which were greater than the 0.05 significance level. Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between maternal employment status and the appropriateness of complementary feeding, either in terms of time, type, portion, or texture (p-value > 0.05).   Keywords: Nutrition; Mother's Occupation; Provision of Complementary Feeding.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between knowledge and sodium intake and the incidence of hypertension in the Meureubo Community Health Center (UPT) work area. This study used a descriptive analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population was all hypertension patients visiting the General Clinic of the Meureubo Community Health Center (UPT Puskesmas) (N=1,191), with a sample of 92 respondents selected using accidental sampling. The research instruments included a knowledge questionnaire, a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) to measure sodium intake, and an observation sheet. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of α=0.05. The results showed a significant relationship between knowledge level and the incidence of hypertension (p-value = 0.016), as well as a significant relationship between sodium intake and the incidence of hypertension (p-value = 0.014). This suggests that respondents with low knowledge and high sodium intake are at greater risk of developing hypertension. The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between knowledge and sodium intake and the incidence of hypertension in the Meureubo Community Health Center (UPT Puskesmas) work area. It is recommended that the Community Health Center increase educational activities related to healthy living behavior and limiting sodium consumption to prevent and control hypertension.

Abstract

Stunting has been shown to be associated with increased morbidity and mortality in children, reduced cognitive function, and an increased risk of chronic diseases in adulthood. Stunting is caused by nutrient deficiencies that last for a long time. Low intake of nutrients, especially animal protein, is a factor causing stunting in Indonesia. The family, especially parents, has a very important role in terms of selection and feeding of children. This is to ensure that children get food according to their needs, both in quality and quantity. Therefore, a solution is provided in the form of family nutrition counseling related to stunting prevention with animal protein as an effort to increase knowledge. Counseling is expected to be more optimal by using media in the form of flyers so that the message or material conveyed can be more easily understood by the target group. The target of the service activity is families who have clowns and toddlers in RT 02 Siring Agung Village, Lubuklinggau City as many as 20 families. The target of the activity was very enthusiastic about participating in the implementation of the activity because the materials, methods and media used were interesting. Nutritional counseling to prevent stunting with animal protein in clown mothers and toddlers can help increase knowledge, change attitudes and good nutritional behaviors in preparing and improving the fulfillment of children's nutrition to prevent stunting.

Abstract

Good nutritional status in toddlers is essential for child health and development. Nationally, the prevalence of underweight among children under five in Indonesia is 15.9%, consisting of 3.0% severely underweight and 12.9% underweight, while 84.1% of toddlers have normal nutritional status. At the provincial level, Aceh shows a higher prevalence of underweight at 22.6%, including 4.9% severely underweight, 17.7% underweight, and 77.4% with normal nutritional status. At the district level, data from the Aceh Barat Health Office in 2024 recorded 530 cases of underweight, with the highest distribution in the working areas of Cot Seumeureung Health Center (85 cases), Kuala Bhee Health Center (84 cases), and Johan Pahlawan Health Center (83 cases). This condition highlights the importance of the mother’s role, particularly maternal attitudes toward fulfilling toddlers’ nutritional needs. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between maternal attitudes and the incidence of underweight among toddlers in the working area of Cot Seumeureung Health Center. A quantitative cross-sectional design was used, involving 63 mothers of children aged 0–59 months from three villages through total sampling. Data were collected from November to December 2025 using questionnaires, interviews, and anthropometric measurements based on WHO weight-for-age (WFA) z-score standards, and analyzed using the chi-square test (α = 0.05). The results showed that most mothers had positive attitudes toward toddler nutrition, and there was a significant relationship between maternal attitudes and the incidence of underweight (p = 0.040). In conclusion, maternal attitudes play an important role in determining toddlers’ nutritional status; therefore, underweight prevention efforts should focus on fostering positive attitudes, appropriate feeding practices, and strengthening continuous nutrition education and assistance through integrated health posts (posyandu) and health workers.

Abstract

Stunting remains a public health challenge that requires appropriate interventions, one of which is increasing the consumption of animal protein. This community service activity aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of mothers with toddlers in preparing catfish as a local protein source to prevent stunting. The method used was participatory cooking demonstrations in Kelurahan 15 Ulu, Palembang, involving 25 mothers with toddlers. Activities included introducing the benefits of catfish, practicing making catfish nuggets and meatballs, and conducting interactive discussions. Evaluation results showed a significant increase in participants' understanding, with an average post-test score of 74.8 compared to a pre-test score of 53.6. About 72% of participants committed to making catfish nuggets because they are easy to prepare and liked by children. This activity successfully empowers mothers with toddlers through an enjoyable and practical educational approach, while also encouraging the use of local resources to improve family nutrition. Thus, the cooking demonstration approach has proven effective in educating the community while empowering them to participate independently in efforts to prevent stunting.
