Abstract

Academic literacy requires the use of citation techniques. It will authenticate research, acknowledge the original authors, and assist readers in locating additional reading materials. The citation styles of authors and scholars who publish on ScienceDirect and Google Scholar are examined in this study. Five research papers from each of these platforms are examined in our analysis, which focuses on the three primary citation strategies—direct quotation, paraphrase, and description that are outlined in Wang's framework (Wang, 2006). Our analysis reveals that while both platforms effectively employ these tactics, there are discernible differences in their implementation. Specifically, ScienceDirect papers tend to have more seamless citation integration, which enhances readability and coherence. The ScienceDirect articles do a great job of contextualizing direct quotes, simplifying complex ideas, and providing in-depth descriptive analyses that improve understanding without disrupting the flow. This research significantly advances writing abilities by determining the best practices for integrating citations into academic discourse. It highlights the need of considering platform-specific considerations when writing academic publications, particularly for researchers who are not native English speakers, and how understanding how different citation styles impact readability and coherence facilitates scholarly writing.

Abstract

Mirroring is a behaviour in which one person unconsciously imitates the gestures, facial expressions, speech or posture of another person. This study aims to analyse how is the NLP mirroring pattern realized and used in the interaction between the host and the guests on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”. This study uses a qualitative content analysis approach using the theory of NLP mirroring by John Grinder and Richard Bandler (2008) including behavioural mirroring, symbolical mirroring and exchanged matches. This study shows that there are 37 data found. There are 10 (27%) data as behavioural mirroring, 19 (51%) data as symbolical mirroring, and 8 (22%) data as exchanged matches Mirroring is a powerful tool in human interactions that subconsciously shapes how individuals connect with others. By imitating body language, facial expressions, and speech patterns, it creates trust, comfort, and empathy. This can be particularly helpful in vulnerable or stressed situations, leading to smoother communication and stronger relationships. It is hoped that the result of this research is useful for everyone who wants to study about NLP mirroring techniques.

Abstract

Reframing is a language strategy in neuro linguistic programming (NLP) that changes an individual’s perception by altering the meaning or context of an experience. This study uses Richard Bandler and John Grinder’s (1982) theory of reframing to analyze reframing techniques in Pete Docter’s Soul (2020), supported by language attributes such as modality, lexical, temporal and Pragmatic shift. Language attributes can serve as indicators that reveal how language structure affects a character’s thoughts, feelings, and transformations. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach, examining dialogue and narrative elements to identify reframing expressions and their language patterns. A total of 50 data points were found: 27 positive reframings (54%), 17 neutral reframings (34%), 3 temporal reframings (6%), and 3 situational reframings (6%). The results of the study showed that positive reframing was the most prominent, highlighting its impact on character development and shifts in thought patterns. The process of reconstruction, especially in characters such as Joe Gardner and 22, embodies a deeper understanding of the meaning of life and personal identity, which is constructed through the conscious use of language. This can be very helpful in vulnerable or stressful situation, leading to good communication and how to deal with difficult circumstances. It is hoped that the result is useful for everyone who wants to study about NLP Reframing techniques.

Abstract

In the digital era, food literacy—an essential competency for making informed dietary choices—has gained significance in enhancing not only individual health but also communication skills. This study investigates the role of the Google Fit application in improving food literacy and its subsequent impact on positive communication among university students. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, we explored how the use of Google Fit influenced the understanding of food literacy and fostered supportive, constructive interactions among 20 English Literature students at UNIMED. Findings reveal that Google Fit’s features, such as calorie tracking and activity monitoring, significantly enhance students' awareness of nutrition and healthy eating behaviors. Furthermore, improved food literacy encouraged participants to engage in data-driven, empathetic dialogues, thus fostering positive communication. The results highlight the potential of mobile applications to serve as effective educational tools, not only for promoting health literacy but also for cultivating essential interpersonal skills. These findings underscore the importance of integrating digital tools into academic practices to bridge the gap between personal health education and broader social competencies.

Abstract

This paper explores the use of Milton's Language Pattern Model in English Language Teaching (ELT) advertisements on Instagram. Drawing upon Ellerton's (2006) Milton Model framework and Searle's (1969) Speech Act Theory, with a specific focus on illocutionary acts, this research aims to identify the types of Milton Model patterns present in these advertisements and analyse how they are utilized to influence potential learners. Qualitative content analysis was applied to 30 ELT advertisements from Indonesian Instagram accounts. The results show that 15 out of 20 Milton Model language patterns have been identified, accumulating 78 instances. There were four patterns that become the most common patterns, which are Universal Quantifier (13%), Pace Current Experience (13%), Presupposition (12%), and Unspecified Verb (12%). The findings of the present study demonstrate that advertisers use of Milton Model language patterns in order to implicitly make claims, develop connections with their audience, and guide the audience to the direction of desired actions. This is accomplished by using vagueness, emotional connection, and assumed truths to enhance the persuasive impact, while also utilizing linguistic functions as assertive and directive illocutionary acts. This research expands a valuable insight by uniquely integrating the analysis of Milton Model language patterns with illocutionary functions as assertive and directive acts and specific advertising objectives, offering a novel, multi-layered framework for understanding digital persuasion in the English Language Teaching (ELT).

Abstract

Creative writing plays an important role in developing students’ imagination, self- expression, and language competence in the digital era. However, many learners still struggle with generating ideas, maintaining motivation, and gaining confidence in writing. This study aims to analyze how the use of Wattpad, viewed through the Social Constructivist framework, can enhance students’ creative writing skills, motivation, and confidence. This research applies a qualitative descriptive approach supported by survey data from 30 high school students who actively use Wattpad. The results show that 95.7% of respondents have used Wattpad before, with most of them using it to read and learn from other writers. A total of 60.9% of respondents stated that reading other writers’ works was the most helpful for improving their writing, while 17.4% highlighted peer comments and feedback as additional support. Despite its benefits, 43.5% of students mentioned difficulty in organizing ideas as their main challenge. Open-ended responses revealed that positive feedback and community interaction on Wattpad helped increase students’ motivation and confidence in writing. The discussion emphasizes that the social interaction and feedback features of Wattpad foster collaborative learning, aligning with Vygotsky’s concepts of scaffolding and the Zone of Proximal Development. These findings suggest that integrating Wattpad into writing instruction can effectively enhance students’ creativity, critical thinking, and confidence in producing literary works.

Abstract

Beginner students often face difficulties in academic writing, such as organizing ideas, choosing correct grammar, and expressing information in their own words. Because of this, many students use QuillBot as a writing support tool. This study aims to understand how QuillBot helps beginner writers become more independent in academic writing. The research used a mixed-method approach with 30 students from the English Language and Literature Department at the State University of Medan, with data collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire and open-ended reflections. The findings show that more than 70% of the students use QuillBot frequently in their writing tasks. Most students said that QuillBot helps improve grammar accuracy, sentence clarity, and paraphrasing skills, and also increases their confidence in writing. The summarizing feature also helps students identify and restate main ideas. However, 59% of the students noted that using QuillBot too much may reduce creativity and lead to dependency. The study concludes that QuillBot is helpful as a supporting tool for writing, but it should be used in balance. Students still need to practice writing independently so they can develop their own writing style and confidence.
