Abstract

This research aims to describe the expectations of teachers and students towards STEM-based Biochemistry modules in promoting critical thinking and creativity. An interdisciplinary approach and appropriate learning module involving elements of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) integrated into the Engineering Design Process (EDP) are deemed to improve student learning experiences through problem-solving activities in the real world. This study used a qualitative descriptive method through a survey. The subject is teachers of Biochemistry courses and students who have taken Biochemistry courses and fill out the survey voluntarily. Research data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results showed that teachers and students expect the modules need to include contextual materials and integrate the elements of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and the presentation of learning materials should be interactive and attractive. This research will be a reference in developing STEM-based Biochemistry teaching materials that can develop students' critical thinking skills and creativity.

Abstract

Feed is one of the main points that determine crayfish successful cultivation. The feed commonly use fish flour tends to be expensive; therefore, it becomes an obstacle for crayfish cultivators. This study aimed to determine the effect of pellet feed made from maggot flour, mealworm flour, and golden snail flour on crayfish growth as an alternative feed that are more affordable. This research was conducted using laboratory experiment design consisted of three treatments and three replications of each. The research design used fish flour-based pellet for control (P0), maggot flour, mealworm flour, and golden snail flour-based pellet for treatment 1 (P1), maggot flour, mealworm flour, golden snail flour, and fish flour-based pellet for treatment 2 (P2). The experiment conducted during one month, using 90 individuals’ crayfish. The effect of treatments on the growth measured by three main parameters such as: dry and wet biomass, carapace length, and supported by feed analysis using feed conversion ratio (FCR) and feed utilization efficiency (FUE). The results showed that P1 has significant effect on the dry biomass growth (p=0.001), wet biomass growth (p=0.000), carapace length growth (p=0.049). Feed analysis showed that P1 has significant effect on FCR (p=0.004) and FUE (p=0.010).

Abstract

Education has undergone significant changes in modern times. Students are experiencing a decline in their thinking skills, particularly in the areas of creativity and critical thinking. This is due to the monotonous nature of their learning, which has resulted in less developed thinking patterns. The EDP model aims to improve creative problem-solving skills, equip students with the ability to overcome difficulties through careful planning, and encourage learning through failure. This study describes the B-ProDe TEct (Brainstorming, Problem Solving, Design Prototype, Try, Evaluate of Conflicts) learning model, which integrates Brain-Based Learning (BBL) principles into Engineering Design Process (EDP). The model has been demonstrated to enhance creative thinking skills and improve science learning outcomes in junior high school students. The study utilizes a mixed methods research approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative methods. This approach enables a more comprehensive analysis of the research question. The practicality scores from each school, derived from the feasibility test, were 87.08%, 83.25%, and 86.67% respectively, resulting in an overall average of 85.67%. The study evaluated the effectiveness of the B-Pro DeTEct learning model on a group of 30 students. The N-gain was 0.37 at the third session and 0.55 at the fourth session, with an average N-gain of 0.46. These results suggest a moderate increase in cognitive learning outcomes before and after using the model. The study concludes that the model is valid, practical, and successful in enhancing creative thinking skills.

Abstract

The triangle of lakes which are Bedali Lake, Klakah Lake and Pakis Lake area serves as a sanctuary for many wildlife including butterflies. Butterfly spesies at Ranu Bedali has ecological functions as herbivors, pollination, detrivor, as well as bioindicator of ecosystem changes. The objective of this study was to identify the diversity of butterflies in triangle of lakes Lumajang Regency. The sampling technique used was Abundance Point Index Method. All spesies captured were identified and analyzed. The results showed that the composition of butterflies have been obtained consisted of 4 families and 37 species. The most abundant family with a huge of species is Nymphalidae while the least family is Lycaenidea. The diversity index (H’) for the butterflies in Pakis Lake, Klakah Lake and Bedali Lake were 2.56; 2.73 and 2.76 respectively. The evenness index (E) for the butterflies in Pakis Lake, Klakah Lake and Bedali Lake were 0.43; 0.47 and 0.48 respectively. Among the butterlies, it found Troides helena was classified at the list of Appendix I and Appendix II CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered).

Abstract

Argumentation skills are very important in science learning which is used to build opinions with rational evidence to draw conclusions through logical reasoning. This research is a qualitative research with a case study approach to identify students' argumentation skills using learning Engineering Design Process (EDP). The subjects of this study were 12 students, each consisting of six male students and six female students in grade 7 junior high school. The data collected are in the form of observation data, documentation and interviews during learning. The collected data will be reduced, analyzed based on indicators of argumentation skills and presented and then drawn conclusions. The results showed that students' argumentation skills in EDP learning were dominated by components claim by 87%, 47% data, and 33% warrant. This shows that students' arguments are not have been good, so they are only able to provide claims without understanding the underlying reasons and the existing data relationships as evidence to support claims. Experience aspects, science concepts, and user needs help students build solution designs during learning. EDP through a collaborative process has helped and expanded students' ideas and arguments in solving problems.

Abstract

The increasing use of disposable plastic bags is affecting environmental problems because it requires thousands of years to degrade naturally. To overcome these problems, mealworms (larvae of Tenebrio molitor L.) become an alter-native solution. They can be considered as biodegradation agents of plastic because of the presence of symbiont bacte-ria in its gut that secretes plastic-depolymerizing enzymes. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the degradation and digestion ability of T. molitor in consuming various plastic types and thickness. Two designs have also been used: first, comparing the degradation and digestion of various plastic types, and second, comparing the degradation and diges-tion of various plastic bag thicknesses. The first design consists of three types of treatments, and the control group comprised three repetitions. The control group was fed with concentrate; treatment group 1 (P1), PP plastic bags; treat-ment group 2 (P2), high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic bags; and treatment group 3 (P3), styrofoam. The second design encompasses two treatment types, and the control group composed of repetitions. The control group was fed with concentrate; treatment group 1 (P1), HDPE plastic bags with a thickness 0.01 mm; and treatment group 2 (P2), HDPE plastic bags with a thickness of 0.02 mm. The result indicates that in the first design, the highest degradation and digestion occurred in treatment 3 (styrofoam) with an average of 0.001267 and 0.0063 fragment/individual, respective-ly. The second design the highest degradation occurred at P1 of 0.000009609 mg/day/individual. The highest digestion occurred at P1 with a total average of 0.004568 fragment/individual.
