Abstract

Mobula thurstoni is a species of elasmobranch belonging to the family Mobulidae which is often caught as by-catch in the Muncar Coastal Fishing Port. The method used in this research is descriptive quantitative and qualitative. Qualitative data analysis is obtained by identifying the ray species and their gender, while quantitative data analysis is obtained by collecting data on the length and weight of the ray. This research was conducted in July – August 2022 at the Muncar Coastal Fishing Port, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java. The research aims to discover the biological aspects including; the relationship between width and weight, sex ratio, and width frequency of ray (Mobula thurstoni). Based on the results of the study on the relationship between width and weight, after the t-test was also carried out, the results of Tcount > Ttable (3.56 > 2.20) showed negative allometric results (b = 2.53), meaning that the weight gain was slower than the increase in width. The male and female sex ratio was 1:0.63 with the Chi-square test X2count > X2table (0.69 > 2.18), so there was no significant difference in sex ratio. The lowest frequency is between 71 – 90 cm and the highest is between 147 – 166 cm with the mode frequency between 109 – 128.

Abstract

LIFE (Low impact and Fuel Efficient) FISHING. Fisheries management is essential to aquatic resource management (species stocks and their environment). Fisheries resources have a comprehensive definition and generally refer to all animals that predominantly inhabit aquatic habitats and are caught by humans. Stock depletion is caused by high fishing productivity, which is influenced by the use of fishing gear fleets. Fishing gear fleets must be able to take into account at least three main impacts, namely: (1) environmental impacts, (2) impacts on resource abundance, and (3) impacts on target stocks of fish resources. This research was conducted from March to June 2023 at Brondrong Harbor. The research methodology employed in this study is descriptive, utilizing interviews, observations, and documentation. The purpose of this study is to determine the information of fishermen as direct users of the existence of fish resources about Fishing with low impact and fuel-efficient LIFE (Low impact and Fuel Efficient) FISHING. Based on the Low Impact study results, the fishing gear with the most significant contribution to the aquatic environment is cantrang with a value of 34%, payang gear with 41%, handline with 65%, and longline with 64%. So, the fishing gear with the lowest contribution is longline and handline, then payang and cantrang. Based on fuel efficiency, the fishing gear with the best fuel efficiency is longline and hand line fishing gear with a value of 67%, then payang with a value of 59%, and cantrang with a value of 42%. This refers to the influence of vessel size, trip distance, and trip length of longline and handline and longline vessels which are less than payang and cantrang fishing gear. The study suggests using longline and fishing gear due to their environmental friendliness and material efficiency.

Abstract

Blue swimming crab is one of the leading commodities in the capture fisheries sector in waters which are caught using gill nets and traps/bubu lipat. The potential for loss of these two fishing gears during operation is very high, both due to weather factors, bottom conditions of the waters and interactions with other fishing gears. Leftover fishing gear in the waters known as Abandoned, Lost or Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG) contributes significantly to the abundance of marine debris in the sea which has a negative impact on the preservation of fish resources, water quality and endangers shipping safety. Even so, there have been little efforts to mitigate and reduce ALDFG in marine waters. This study conducted at Demak of Central Java from August to September 2023 which aims to identify the causes of fishing gear debris in crab fisheries in marine waters. Data collection was carried out by in-depth interviews with respondents who were deliberately selected around the crab fishermen's landings, the results of which were then analyzed descriptively. This study found that the source of marine debris originating from swimming crab fishing gear was caused by lost fishing gear, not because it was intentionally thrown into the sea. Lost fishing gear occurs due to natural factors and is affected by the operation of other types of fishing gear by 23% and 27% respectively.

Abstract

Fourfinger threadfin Eleutheronema tetradactylum has a local name, namely laosan fish by the coastal community of Lekok Pasuruan District, a type of demersal fish that can swim in brackish waters. This research aimed to determine the biological aspects, namely the relationship of Length to Weight, sex ratio, and to determine the feasibility of catching based on the measurement results of the length of the first caught (Lc) and the length of the gonads first ripened (Lm). This research was conducted based on catches during Januari - March 2020 for total samples of as much as 450 fish, based on the catch of gill nets. The result informed that the length and weight relationship was negative allometric. The sex ratio between male and female was 1.00: 0.00. During the study, no female gonads were found because the fourfinger threadfin had spawned protandrous hermaphrodites. The value of length at first maturity (Lm) and length at first capture (Lc) was 20.99 ± 0.13 cm and 24.66 ± 0.046 cm. Lc > Lm's value proves that the fish caught is dominant gonad ripe fish so that the fish is suitable for catching and the fishing gear used selectively.

Abstract

Shark and ray fishery issues raised in Indonesia as some species have been listed in the IUCN red list. In relation to the conservation of some shark and ray species, critical information is required related to several biological aspects to assure its fishery sustainability. This study was conducted in Brondong Fishing Port in February – March 2020. Length, weight, and maturity level data were collected from 272 shark individuals and 267 ray individuals. Several analyses were performed, such as length-weight relationship analysis, sex ratios, and maturity level analysis. The study found 18 species listed in the IUCN red list were dominantly composed of Carcharias taurus and Dasyatis kuhlii. Both species have negative allometric, while the sex ratios showed that the ratio of the number of male and female individuals for shark and ray are 1:5 and 1:2, respectively. The maturity level of male individuals for Carcharias taurus pointed that 33% full calcification (FC), 17% non-full calcification (NFC), and 50% non-calcification (NC), while for Dasyatis kuhlii resulted that 66% FC, 28% NFC, and 6% NC. It is concluded that the biological aspects of the dominant species indicated that most individuals were in a critical state, thus it is required to monitor and control their fishing pressures.

Abstract

This study was conducted to understand the influence of monsoons and ocean currents on the distribution and composition of waste in the Wonorejo Mangrove Ecotourism, Surabaya. Using a shoreline survey method at five locations, waste data was collected in March, May, and September 2024. The analysis focused on measuring the amount and weight of waste, especially plastic, rubber, cloth, and other materials. The results showed that plastic waste was the most dominant, reaching 95.33% of the total weight of waste in September, while in March and May, the amount was also very high. A significant spike in rubber waste was recorded in May, possibly due to increased recreational activities during the holiday season. The pattern of waste changes showed that the west monsoon (December-March) which brought high rainfall caused an increase in the accumulation of waste on the beach, especially plastic and rubber, due to surface flow carrying waste from the mainland to the coast. Conversely, in the east monsoon (June-September), which is generally drier, there was a decrease in the amount of accumulated waste, especially plastic, because the ocean current moving away from the coast reduced the accumulation of waste on the coast. Mangroves play an important role as natural filters, capturing and reducing waste that enters the coastal ecosystem. Based on these findings, it is recommended to improve waste management facilities and public education on reducing the use of single-use plastics to reduce the negative impact of waste on the mangrove ecosystem.

Abstract

Prigi Perikanan Nusantara Port (PPN) is one of the largest capture fisheries centres in East Java, located in the waters of the Indian Ocean and included in the State Fisheries Management Area of the Republic of Indonesia (WPP-NRI 573). These waters are dominated by pelagic fish resources such as deles (Decapterus macrosoma). The high level of kite fish utilisation in Prigi indicates great economic potential, but also indicates a threat to the sustainability of the resource if not managed wisely. This research needs to be conducted to provide a deeper understanding of the biological aspects of deles swallow, given the high utilisation rate that could potentially threaten the sustainability of fisheries resources if not managed properly. The main focus of the research included length-weight relationship, gonad maturity level (TKG), gonad maturity index (IKG), and sex ratio of deles flyfish. The study used descriptive quantitative method with simple random sampling of fish landed by fishermen using purse seine gear. The results showed that the growth pattern of Deles flyfish is negative allometric with a b value of 2.038, which indicates that length growth is more dominant than weight. The level of gonad maturity showed variations from TKG I to V, with a higher gonad maturity index value for females than males. Sex ratio analysis showed that the proportion of male and female fish tended to be balanced with non-significant chi-square test results. This research is expected to contribute to sustainable fisheries management in WPP-NRI 573.

Abstract

The southern waters of Java are suitable to be the largest supplier of Yellowfin tuna exports in Indonesia, but have not efficiently produced the expected yield. This research minimizes these constraints by modeling the yellowfin tuna fishing grounds in the southern waters of Java based on oceanographic factors such as Sea Surface Temperature (SST), chlorophyll-a (CHL_A), Sea Surface Salinity (SSS), Sea Surface Height (SSH) using an integration between remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and the Generalized Additive Model (GAM) statistical method. This study used oceanographic factor data from Aqua MODIS Level-3 and Copernicus, while yellowfin tuna fishery production was obtained from Palabuhanratu Nusantara Fishing Port (NFP), Cilacap Ocean Fishing Port (OFP), and Pondokdadap Coastal Fishing Port (CFP). The modeling process used 80% of the data, while the remaining 20% was used to validate the model results. The order of influence of oceanographic parameters from largest to smallest is SST > SSS > SSH > CHL-A. The best model from the GAM analysis showed that the combination of four oceanographic parameters had the greatest influence on yellowfin tuna CPUE. The catch per unit effort (CPUE) of yellowfin tuna was predicted to be high in May-October and low in November-April. The prediction model had high accuracy because most of the fishing activity was in the HSI 0.4-0.5 range and the RMSEP value was 0.63. Yellowfin tuna were suitable in habitats distributed from inshore to offshore in June and July, but less suitable in December.
