Abstract

Teacher groups in Musi Banyuasin district have great potential in developing learning materials, in the form of leveled books. Their significant benefits in meeting students' reading needs according to their level of difficulty and understanding make leveled books an important product that can be created by classroom teachers. This book also has the potential to be a medium to increase students' awareness of global issues, including climate change, through the integration of relevant content in learning. For this reason, the service team from FKIP Sriwijaya University designed a program to facilitate the assistance and training activities needed. As the first step of the program, the service team conducted an initial exploration regarding the teacher participants' mastery of digital tools and artificial intelligence (AI). The method of the exploration activity was to distribute questionnaires that must be filled in by the participants. The result is that 59.1% of teachers understand the concept of leveled books and 63.6% of teachers use leveled books in the classroom. Unfortunately, 63.6% of teachers stated that they had never made leveled books for their class. Regarding the role of digital tools, teachers seem to be familiar with Canva and AI. The data shows that 81.8% of teachers often use Canva to create teaching materials. There are also other tools that are utilized, such as YouTube, ChatGPT, and YouTube. It can be concluded that, the process of mentoring and training for making tiered books is mandatory considering that teachers already have basic knowledge related to digital tools and AI.

Abstract

The rise of digital technology has transformed communication and content creation, particularly on social media platforms like Instagram. This study explores how content creators use English and multimodal elements to engage audiences, the challenges they face, and how their English learning experiences influence their content creation practices. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with four Instagram content creators and an analysis of their digital artifacts. Findings reveal that content creators develop their English proficiency through formal education, self-learning via media exposure, and interactive digital communication. English is employed strategically to reach broader audiences, with creators combining it with their native language through code-switching. Multimodal elements, such as text, images, and audio, play a crucial role in enhancing engagement, enabling creators to convey messages effectively. Despite these advantages, challenges persist. Non-native English-speaking creators face difficulties in grammar accuracy, pronunciation, and vocabulary selection. To overcome these, they rely on tools like online dictionaries, AI-based applications, and audience feedback. The study also highlights that content creation fosters confidence in English use and enhances digital literacy skills. By examining the intersection of language learning, multimodal communication, and audience engagement, this research contributes to the understanding of English as a global language in digital spaces. The findings offer insights for educators, learners, and content creators seeking to navigate the evolving landscape of digital communication.

Abstract

This study investigates how picture books, through their visual and textual storytelling integration, can enhance reading comprehension and promote social awareness within an under-resourced English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. Conducted at SMP Negeri 4 Jirak Jaya in South Sumatra, Indonesia, the research examines the effectiveness of picture book-based instruction in improving students’ narrative reading skills and encouraging reflection on issues such as poverty and inequality, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1, 4, and 10). Employing a mixed-methods case study design, the study involved 13 Grade 8 students, 11 of whom were primary contributors to their families’ income and were purposefully selected as key participants. Quantitative data were collected through validated and reliable pre- and post-tests on narrative reading comprehension. Results demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in students’ reading scores, with mean scores increasing from 54.09 to 73.86 (p < .001, Cohen’s d = 5.75), indicating a large effect size. Normality tests supported the appropriateness of parametric statistical analysis. Complementing these findings, qualitative data from semi-structured interviews revealed students’ strong emotional and personal connections to the stories. Thematic analysis yielded five key themes: emotional responses, personal experiences, favorite story elements, increased motivation to study, and lessons learned. Students consistently reported that the narratives reflected their real-life experiences and responsibilities, fostering a sense of validation, motivation, and deeper engagement with social issues. These findings highlight picture books' pedagogical potential in developing reading comprehension and cultivating empathy and critical reflection among learners in marginalized educational settings.

Abstract

Climate change is one of the most critical issues we are currently facing. Considering the devastating impact of climate change to many people in the world, an interdisciplinary approach to climate change mitigation is highly essential. Teachers have a crucial responsibility in transferring knowledge, persuading students, and setting an example for critical thinking and environmental advocacy in order to prepare students for the challenges posed by climate change. The issue of climate change is one of the topics and goals of EFL teachers in preparing students to face climate change. The aim of this research is to explore teachers' knowledge, beliefs, attitudes and preparedness in integrating climate change issues in ELT. This study employed a survey method, which involved 214 Indonesian EFL teachers from various levels of education, from elementary to high school. Data were analyzed through questionnaires, consisting of four parts: teachers’ knowledge, belief, attitude and preparedness in integrating climate change issues in ELT. The results show that there is a correlation between knowledge, belief and attitude towards preparedness in incorporating climate change education in EFL learning. Moreover, most teachers expressed their willingness to teach climate change issues in ELT, despite the score of their knowledge, belief, and attitude regarding climate change. These results shed light on teachers’ understanding of climate change, belief about, and attitude toward climate change issues. Implications of the study include the possibility of incorporating climate change education in EFL learning and EFL sustainable teacher education.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic led to the worldwide closure of educational institutions, forcing a shift from face-to-face to fully online learning. As the pandemic subsided, traditional teaching resumed. This study aimed to explore English teaching and learning in higher education across three phases—before, during, and after the pandemic—by examining differences in activities and technology used. A phenomenological approach was employed, with semi-structured interviews for data collection. Purposive sampling selected eight participants—three lecturers and five students—from the English Education Department of Sriwijaya University. The findings revealed that while learning activities were largely similar across the three phases, the technology and media used varied. Before the pandemic, participants had limited exposure to online platforms, but the pandemic introduced them to new digital tools and methods. In the post-pandemic phase, participants embraced more flexibility, adopting face-to-face, online, hybrid, or blended learning models using suitable platforms. This shift has led to a general preference for the post-pandemic approach to English teaching and learning.

Abstract

English textbooks are a valuable tool for promoting the development of 21st century skills. Meanwhile, multimodal texts in textbooks are employed by authors to convey meaning through verbal and visual modes, thus necessitating the adoption of multimodal analysis as the most efficacious method for its elucidation. Regrettably, there exists a dearth of literature concerning the application of this approach for analyzing textbooks. To fill this gap, the study examined 21st century skills in an English textbook. This study used content analysis with multimodal social semiotic approach. The subject of the study was an English textbook “English for Nusantara” for the seventh-grade students. The result shown that critical thinking and problem-solving skill was the most frequent type. However, the study did not find any mention of media literacy, and there were only a few instances of economic literacy and global awareness. It is suggested that future revisions should include them. Moreover, English teachers are urged to actively participate in the process of textbook selection and augment the instructional materials with supplementary resources to mitigate any inadequacies of the textbook.
