Abstract

There is an increased urgency of acquiring a lingua franca in this era of industrial revolution 4.0 and society 5.0 as language mastery plays a crucial role in meeting the 21st-century’s demand to compete globally. To this end, family literacy practices have become the keys for the family to socialize their children into the languages they think will benefit their children’s future. Despite the increasingly abundant research on bilingual/multilingualism, research on family English bilingual practice in Indonesian contexts is still limited. This paper is aimed to discuss family literacy practices and language enrichment used to acquire English in two Indonesian families in South Sumatra. A case study design was used to examine translingual practice. Interviews and observations were conducted to collect the data from the two families. Categorizing strategies (coding and thematic analysis) were accomplished to analyze the data. The findings of this study highlight translanguaging, code-switching, and code-mixing as the families’ common literacy practices at home. Another finding reveals the critical role of digital media, such as TV programs, YouTube videos, online games, and books, in supporting children’s English acquisition.  Implications of this study include the need to pay attention to the family literacy practice as important component of understanding how second language socialization occurs outside of formal schooling and the role of digital media in mediating this socialization process.

Abstract

This research article explores the integration of climate change education in the context of English as a Foreign Language teacher education. As climate–induced disasters are on the rise, the mitigation of climate change necessitates an interdisciplinary approach to climate education. While science education has extensively addressed climate change education, the field of language education and literacy has not taken drastic measures to participate in climate change education. The article heeds the call for more research on climate change education in second/foreign language and literacy programs. Using the connected learning and ecojustice pedagogy, we engaged 20 preservice teachers in exploring climate change issues within a semester-long creative writing course. Analyses of classroom discussions, reflective writing, and picture book projects showed that the preservice teachers’ awareness of climate change issues developed as they delved into the projects that required their understanding of the global climate issues with the local connection. The article concludes by arguing that connected learning and ecojustice pedagogy support the development of climate change awareness while facilitating preservice teachers’ multimodal writing skills. It recommends that language educators engage in interdisciplinary participation to address climate change issues through curricular engagements that support multimodal-based climate literacy learning.

Abstract

Climate change is one of the most critical issues we are currently facing. Considering the devastating impact of climate change to many people in the world, an interdisciplinary approach to climate change mitigation is highly essential. Teachers have a crucial responsibility in transferring knowledge, persuading students, and setting an example for critical thinking and environmental advocacy in order to prepare students for the challenges posed by climate change. The issue of climate change is one of the topics and goals of EFL teachers in preparing students to face climate change. The aim of this research is to explore teachers' knowledge, beliefs, attitudes and preparedness in integrating climate change issues in ELT. This study employed a survey method, which involved 214 Indonesian EFL teachers from various levels of education, from elementary to high school. Data were analyzed through questionnaires, consisting of four parts: teachers’ knowledge, belief, attitude and preparedness in integrating climate change issues in ELT. The results show that there is a correlation between knowledge, belief and attitude towards preparedness in incorporating climate change education in EFL learning. Moreover, most teachers expressed their willingness to teach climate change issues in ELT, despite the score of their knowledge, belief, and attitude regarding climate change. These results shed light on teachers’ understanding of climate change, belief about, and attitude toward climate change issues. Implications of the study include the possibility of incorporating climate change education in EFL learning and EFL sustainable teacher education.

Abstract

E-learning is mostly acknowledged as a type of learning that is facilitated by electronic media typically connected to the internet. It has been continuously promoted as an alternative to adult learners enrolled in higher education, especially during the pandemic outbreak. Upon its implementation, many consider the electronic learning option benefits them, while others argue it raises inconveniences. These opposing views certainly stimulate associated lecturers and learners in English language teaching and learning to give different responses as well. Thus, the exploration of their perceptions towards e-learning implementation is highlighted in this article through a case study carried out at one of the private universities in South Sumatera. The participants were two lecturers and ten students from two different courses. Open-ended questionnaires and interviews were conducted to obtain the data and analysed using thematic analysis. A member checking was done to measure the credibility and control of biases in this study. The findings recapitulate that e-learning was implemented to facilitate three main activities, namely administrative task fulfilment, teaching-learning process, and teaching-learning preparation. Besides, the perceptions from all participants showed that online learning classes generated some benefits and drawbacks.

Abstract

English textbooks are a valuable tool for promoting the development of 21st century skills. Meanwhile, multimodal texts in textbooks are employed by authors to convey meaning through verbal and visual modes, thus necessitating the adoption of multimodal analysis as the most efficacious method for its elucidation. Regrettably, there exists a dearth of literature concerning the application of this approach for analyzing textbooks. To fill this gap, the study examined 21st century skills in an English textbook. This study used content analysis with multimodal social semiotic approach. The subject of the study was an English textbook “English for Nusantara” for the seventh-grade students. The result shown that critical thinking and problem-solving skill was the most frequent type. However, the study did not find any mention of media literacy, and there were only a few instances of economic literacy and global awareness. It is suggested that future revisions should include them. Moreover, English teachers are urged to actively participate in the process of textbook selection and augment the instructional materials with supplementary resources to mitigate any inadequacies of the textbook.

Abstract

Climate change is a global issue that impacts many people around the world. In recent years, several areas in South Sumatra have experienced the uneven impacts of climate change, especially forest fires and drought. Reflecting on the environmental problems that occur, this is closely related to the behavior of the community. Therefore, climate change education must be provided from the beginning, especially to young learners. This research, conducted at SD IT Harapan Mulia Palembang, aims to explore the potential of bilingual picture books in fostering a sense of responsibility and concern for the environment among young learners. By introducing climate change concepts in an accessible and relevant way, this study seeks to empower children to become advocates for environmental sustainability in their communities. Additionally, it aims to improve language skills and reading interest among young learners. This research involved 24 young sixth grade elementary school students, a stakeholder, and two English teachers through a mixed methods approach, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings of this research reveal the enthusiasm of young learners in using bilingual picture books about climate change in the classroom. Young learners have their own characteristics of books to use, some of which are based on themes and illustrations, story content, use of two languages, number of pages, and interactive elements such as crossword puzzles or short exercises that can hone their language skills. Therefore, researchers suggest that bilingual picture books can be developed and applied as effective and attractive learning media for young learners in English Language Teaching class. Keywords: climate change education; English for Young Learners; bilingual picturebooks; English language teaching
