Abstract

This study was an attempt to test speaking task modelsin teaching transactional conversation for students who have different cognitive styles. These tasksare expected to be appropriatespeaking task models for the students in other to they engage effectively in learning English.This study investigated the effectiveness of listing and comparing tasks in teaching transactional conversation for reflective and impulsive students, the significant differences of achievement between the students by using the listing task and the comparing tasks, discover the significant interaction among the tasks and the cognitive styles in affecting students’ speaking achievement, and the students’ feedback in learning transactional conversation by using the tasks. The research method of this study was quantitativeby using 2x2 factorial experimental research design. The method of collecting the data was observing the cognitive styles of the students, conducting the pre-test and the post-test, and finally givingquestionnaires. After that, the method of analyzing the data used t-test, ANOVA, and triangulation. The results of this study can be concluded that the use of listing task was effective in teaching transactional conversation for the reflective and impulsive students. The result showed that the level of significance by using the listing task and comparing tasks for the reflective and impulsive students was significant because the p values ware smaller than 0.05 (5%). In other hand, the significant difference of achievement between the students by using the listing and comparing tasks were not significant because the p values were greater than 5%. Then, the significant of interaction among the tasks and the cognitive styles in affecting the students’ speaking achievement was not significant because the f-account (1.830) was lower than the t-table (4.098) or it can be assumed that the tasks and the cognitive styles did not affect the students’ achievement significantly.

Abstract

This study investigated story retelling in relation to students’ motivation in speaking ability of narrative story. The objectives of the study were to find out: (1) Problems faced by the students of the grade XI of SMA N Jatitujuh in teaching learning process of speaking, (2) How story retelling was implemented in speaking class, (3) How story retelling improved students’ speaking ability in speaking class, (4) How story retelling improved students’ motivation in speaking class. The design of this research was three cycles of Classroom Action Research. The participants of the research were 30 students of eleventh graders of SMAN Jatitujuh, Majalengka. The study used questionnaire, observation and test as the instruments. The data of the research were collected through questionnaire, observation and test. The results of the study were firstly, the students got bored and tended to be passive, they were lack of grammar, vocabularies, fluency and correct pronunciation. Secondly, story retelling was implemented by using group discussion, students experienced to retell the story both in group and in front of the class. Thirdly, the result of students’ speaking skill showed some improvements as follows; from pre-cycle to cycle 1 increased 6%. From cycle 1 to cycle 2 increased 9.92 % and from cycle 2 to cycle 3 increased 7.31 %. Fourthly, based on the observation, the students who have high motivation increase from 37% in the pre-cycle to 40 % in the first cycle then become 70 % in cycle 2 and finally 90 % in cycle 3. The result of students’ motivation based on the questionnaire from pre-cycle to cycle 1 increased 9.29 %. From cycle 1 to cycle 2 increased 10.97% and from cycle 2 to cycle 3 increased 4.74%. Based on the findings, story retelling could improve students’ motivation in speaking ability of the second semester students of SMAN Jatitujuh Majalengka academic year 2014/2015.

Abstract

This study investigated the implementation of scientific approach in teaching speaking for various texts. It is aimed to describe and capture how teacher candidates implement scientific approach which consists of observing, questioning, exploring, associating and communicating in their teaching practice. What problems they faced during their teaching practice and how teacher candidates solve those problems.This studyuseda qualitative research design.The subjects of this study were three students of English Department of Wiralodra University who were doing teaching practice (PPL). Triangulation was used to validate the data. The findings showed that the three teacher candidates had implemented scientific approach in their teaching speaking although there still a lot of imperfectness and it can be concluded that between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd teacher candidates, the 3rd was the best to implement the scientific approach. The three teacher candidates also found problems in their teaching such as many students were hardly to speak English directly because of the vocabulary and lack of practice. However, both teacher candidates were able to solve the problem by peer error correction.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are: 1) to describe the current General English I syllabus coverage, 2) to find out the IAIN Walisongo student’s needs in General English I. 3) to explain the redesigning processes of the syllabus of General English I, and 4) to explain how suitable is the redesigned syllabus of General English I to IAIN Walisongo students. The study conducted was research and development (R&D) which consists of seven stages to redesign the syllabus. The instruments used to gather the data use questionnaire, interview, observation, and test. The subjects of the study were 68 students. The findings show that the current syllabus of General English I is an integrated course that is mainly about reading and grammar. The students’ needs deal with the materials and activity that can support them to practice and communicate as well as TOEFL materials. The redesigning syllabus employs systematic procedures including current syllabus, students’ needs, and institution policy that were needed to be considered in determining syllabus components. The syllabus suitability was justified based on five aspects namely lecturer’s ability to develop the syllabus, adult learning characteristics covered in teaching learning activities, characters classification, syllabus practicality, and competence achieved.

Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the existing media for learning vocabulary at Terang Bangsa Junior High School, to describe sort of English materials that are needed by seventh graders learners which do not exist at Terang Bangsa Junior High School, to explain modifying a Gladden Monopoly game for learning vocabulary to the seventh graders, and to explain the effectiveness of Gladden Monopoly game for teaching vocabulary to the  seventh graders. This study used a Research & Development (R&D) design, which was used to modify products and measure the effectiveness of the development proposed by Borg and Gall (2007).  The results of the study showed that English teaching material by using Gladden Monopoly game was effective in improving students’ achievement of vocabulary learning. Those were supported by the results of pre and post-test. Based on the results of the observation checklist, questionnaire, and the experts’ validation it showed that Gladden Monopoly game helped in studying English. It can be seen from the result of the answers of the questionnaires in which more than 75% of the students answered ‘A’ or ‘B’ that indicates that the product was easy and attractive to use.

Abstract

The problems of this study are ; What games are available to teach grammar for writing procedural text for the eighth grade of Junior High School students?, what games are needed to teach grammar for writing procedural text?, how is the design of Battleship based on grammar for writing procedural text?, how is the Battleship Game implemented to teach grammar for writing procedural text?, and how suitable is the design of Battleship Game to teach grammar for writing procedural text?.  This study used Research and Development (R&D). The researcher used the steps proposed by Borg & Gall (Borg & Gall, 1983). Those were used to develop the products and to measure the effectiveness of applying the products. The results of the observation, interview, test, questionnaire, and the experts’ validations showed that the “Battleship” Game contribute to the process of learning English. Considering the result of the pre test and the post test, it was proven that studying grammar of procedural text by using “Battleship” game will increase Junior High School students’ writing skill.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan tenor dari mitra bicara pada percakapan dalam buku teks Bahasa Inggris kelas X dan kesesuaian realisasinya dalam konteks. Penelitian ini juga menjelaskan persamaan dan perbedaan antara teks percakapan dari kedua buku teks Bahasa Inggris dalam merealisasikan tenor. Metode deskriptif komparatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Hasil analisis leksikogramatika menunjukkan bahwa teks percakapan dari kedua buku teks didominasi oleh klausa deklaratif. Hal ini berarti mood pada model teks percakapan cenderung memberikan informasi daripada meminta informasi atau meminta barang atau jasa. Hasil dari analisis modalitas menunjukkan bahwa teks percakapan didominasi oleh modulasi kapasitas. Hasil analisis tenor menunjukkan bahwa peran sosial dari teks percakapan meliputi peran antara guru dan siswa, siswa dan siswa, dan teman dan teman. Selanjutnya, status dalam teks percakapan adalah setara dan tidak setara. Antar mitra bicara terdapat terdapat kontak yang rendah dan keterlibatan afektif rendah dan kontak tinggi dan keterlibatan afektif tinggi.This study aims at explaining the tenor of the interactants in the conversation texts found Grade X English textbooks as well as the appropriacy of their realization in the given contexts. This study also explains the similarities and differences between conversation texts found in both English textbooks in realizing tenor. This study was a qualitative research employing a descriptive comparative method. The result of lexico-grammatical analysis of conversation texts in two English textbooks showed the texts of two textbooks were dominated by declarative. This means that the mood in the models of the conversation texts tend to give information rather than demanding information or demanding goods and services. They were between teacher and student, student and student, and friend and friend. Furthermore, there were various statuses found in these texts. They were unequal and equal. At last, the social distances showed low contact and low affective involvement and high contact and high affective involvement.

Abstract

The study has objectives to find out whether 20-Squares: Add One More Word can be used in teaching vocabulary to the seventh graders of SMPN 5 Magelang and to find out whether there is a significant difference of the use of 20-Squares: Add One More Word and Word Clap Games in the students’ vocabulary achievement. The subjects of this study are two classes of seventh grade of SMPN 5 Magelang. One class serves as the control group and one class as the experimental group. This is a quasi-experimental research by using non-equivalent control group design. The instrument used is tests. The result shows that 20-Squares: Add One More Word improves the students’ vocabulary mastery. The result of t-test analysis shows that the experimental group get better achievement than the control group. In the pre-test, the average score of the experimental group is 63 and the control group is 62.67. In the post-test, the  average  score  of  experimental  group  is  81,17  and  the  control  group  is 70,67. The result of the t-test is 3.895 and t-table is 1.67. It means that the t-value is higher than t-table (3.895 > 1.67). Therefore, it can be concluded that 20-Squares: Add One More Word can be used as an alternative way in teaching vocabulary.

Abstract

This paper is based on a research aiming to describe the effectiveness of Group Grid and Round Table technique in teaching writing descriptive text. By using a quasi-experimental design, the research involves the tenth grade students of SMA Taruna Nusantara Magelang in the academic year of 2016/2017. In this case, the experimental group is X IA 12 and the control group is X IA 10. The result shows that the mean score of the experimental group increases from 69.15 to 79.34 after several treatments applying the strategy. The t-test computation reveals that there is a significant difference between the two groups. It is proven by the tvalue (2.844) which is higher than the ttable (1.998). In addition, a questionnaire is administered to know the effect of implementing the technique to the students. The analysis shows that 59.37% of the students agree that the implementation of the strategy assists their comprehension and 31.25% of them even strongly agree towards the statement. Therefore, Group Grid and Round Table technique is proven an effective strategy in teaching writing descriptive text.

Abstract

This study is an experimental research with a factorial design which aimed to find out the effectiveness of Jigsaw Listening and Problem-Solving techniques in teaching listening comprehension using authentic materials to the students with high and low anxiety. The samples of the study were tenth graders of SMA N 11 Kota Ambon in the academic year of 2015/2016. There were two classes, experimental class I and experimental class II which every class consisted of 20 students. Jigsaw listening technique was used in the experimental class I, while problem-solving technique was used in experimental class II. To answer research questions number one up to four, T-test was used. To answer research question number five and six, students’ mean scores in experimental class I and II were compared. While two-ways ANOVA with F-test at the 5% (0.05) level of significance was used to answer the seventh question. The result of this study showed that jigsaw listening and problem-solving techniques were effective to teach listening comprehension to the high and low anxious students. Jigsaw listening was more effective in teaching listening to the low anxious students, while problem-solving technique was more effective in teaching listening to the high anxious students. There was no interaction among jigsaw listening, problem-solving techniques, listening comprehension, and students’ anxiety.
