Abstract

This study examines the English to Indonesian translation of emotional expressions depicted in Daniel Keyes’s novel “The Minds of Billy Milligan” and its Indonesian translation “24 Wajah Billy.” The primary objectives are to describe the emotional expressions portrayed by the main character and to analyze the methods applied in translating these emotional expressions from English to Indonesian. Employing David Krech’s emotional classification theory and drawing on Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation methods, this qualitative descriptive research identifies 28 emotional classification data in the novel. Eight types of emotion classifications were identified, including 13 instances of fear, 6 instances of anger, 3 instances of hate, 2 instances of happiness, 1 instance of pain, 1 instance of guilt and regret, 1 instance of pride and shame, and 1 instance of love. The translation applies six translation methods used in 39 instances borrowing, literal, transposition, modulation, equivalent, and adaptation. Each emotion is translated using different translation methods. The application of these six methods is divided into three variants: single with 18 instances, couplet with 9 instances, and triplet with 1 instance. The literal method is the most frequently used in translating emotional expression. The translation method aims to preserve the essence of the narrative from the source language to the target language.

Abstract

Children with special needs have taken wider attentions in research, especially in finding solutions of how to improve their abilities in communication. The purpose of this research is to identify the challenges and barriers in speech production in English by students with hearing impairments in Pangkalpinang City. Investigation and documentation were the main stages in collecting data. The data were studied using a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Based on the foundation of phonetic theory by Collins and Mess (2019) regarding speech production and the character of children with hearing impairment by Dennis Fry, this research is aimed at analyzing the sounds produced by children with special needs. Experimental observation using the Praat voice analyzer was carried out on students with three types of disabilities: students with vision impairment, hearing impaired, and mental or intellectual disability. The observation results showed that students with hearing impairments (partial and total deafness) were the main concern as their abilities in perceiving and producing speech gave them opportunities to communicate in English despite the barriers, they had to face in pronouncing the words. As conclusion, students with hearing impairment both partial and total deafness produced their speech based on other vocal tracts due to their disability, and certain treatment in speech production should be suggested especially the phonemes involving internal articulators, including alveolar, velar, post-alveolar and nasal sounds. Proximities made in speech showed possibilities to refine their pronunciation.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to determine the relationship between cultural diversity and the potential for cross-cultural conflicts that occur between ethnic Chinese and ethnic Indigenous people in Indonesia. Even though they have been present in the archipelago for thousands of years, the stereotype of the presence of ethnic Chinese is still very strong, namely, with the assumption that they are immigrants who only live here looking for food. Not to mention the prejudice that says that the Chinese are not willing to blend in and tend to be exclusive coupled with the ethnocentric attitude of the indigenous ethnic that the Chinese are a minority group. This study uses a literature study, trying to explain, describe and analyze the conflicts experienced by ethnic Chinese which are collected through books, articles, research results, and relevant written sources. The results of the analysis state that the ethnic Chinese conflict with the Indigenous ethnic group has occurred for a long time. The suspicion factor is the main reason for the conflict. Ethnic Chinese are always the target if there is a conflict, even though the conflict is from another ethnic group. This shows that the existence of ethnic Chinese is still not fully accepted. Cultural diversity is a huge potential for Indonesia if managed properly. For this reason, it is necessary to have empathy, openness, tolerance, respect or differences and develop good cross-cultural communication to avoid misunderstandings.

Abstract

This study investigates the approach adopted by Kompas.com to navigate the delicate balance between press freedom and government control in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative methodology based on framing analysis components developed by Robert N. Entman, the research scrutinizes 237 news stories featured on the Kompas.com portal, identifying discernible patterns. Utilizing Entman's framing analysis, the study seeks to comprehend how Kompas.com conveys information about the PSBB (Large-Scale Social Restrictions) and presents potential solutions to this issue. The analysis reveals that the Government is prominently featured as the primary news source in 83.05% of cases, encompassing 197 news stories, while NGOs (1.265%), experts (7.59%), and communities (8.01%) are introduced to provide limited alternative perspectives. Kompas.com tends to employ a positive framing approach, skillfully balancing the delivery of accurate information, endorsement of government policies, and avoidance of potential conflicts. The exercise of press freedom, shaped by considerations of political and social factors, reflects the intricate nature of the media-government relationship in Indonesia.

Abstract

This community service program entitled “Basic English for Fishermen’s Product Marketing in Baskara Bhakti Village: Export Readiness through Beginner-Level English Proficiency” was designed to address the limited English competence among local fishermen that hinders access to international markets. Using a participatory approach involving the village head and fishermen groups, the program developed learning materials in the form of a Basic English module, conversation worksheets, and short instructional videos tailored to the context of seafood product marketing. The implementation showed that fishermen were able to practice simple sentences such as introducing products, describing quality, stating prices, and responding to buyers’ questions, which significantly enhanced their confidence in using English. Positive responses from both participants and community partners confirmed the relevance of the materials, and indirect benefits were also observed as family members, including women and children, engaged with the learning process. The strengths of this program lie in its contextual design, accessibility, and participatory method, while weaknesses include limited vocabulary coverage, short training duration, digital infrastructure constraints, and lack of long-term evaluation. Overall, the program proved to be a strategic solution to support fishermen’s readiness for export by equipping them with practical English skills for global communication
