Abstract

Effective mathematics instruction requires teachers to diagnose students’ errors and provide scaffolding that is responsive to their learning needs. Yet, pre-service pre-service mathematics teachers (PMTs) frequently encounter challenges in identifying the nature of students’ mistakes and in designing appropriate instructional support. This study investigates the types of student errors diagnosed by pre-service pre-service mathematics teachers and the scaffolding patterns that emerge from their diagnostic practices. Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach, data were gathered through video analysis, microteaching, classroom practice, and in depth interviews. The analysis indicates that pre-service pre-service teachers recognized four major categories of student errors: conceptual misunderstandings, procedural inaccuracies, representational mistakes, and strategic misapplications. In addressing these errors, they employed four corresponding scaffolding patterns. Conceptual scaffolding supported students in reconstructing mathematical meaning, procedural scaffolding provided step-by-step guidance, strategic scaffolding encouraged evaluation of alternative approaches, and metacognitive scaffolding fostered reflection on reasoning and symbolic interpretation. These findings underscore scaffolding as a dynamic and adaptive practice shaped by teachers’ professional vision. The study contributes to mathematics teacher education by demonstrating how practice-based programs can strengthen pre-service pre-service teachers’ capacity to notice, diagnose, and respond to students’ thinking, thereby promoting more inclusive and meaningful mathematics learning. This research provides new insights into how pre-service teachers’ scaffolding practices, shaped by error diagnosis, can inform teacher education globally.

Abstract

Facing the current digital era, correct and accurate decisions are needed to deal with the problems. This research aimed to explore the decision-making abilities of prospective mathematics teacher students in solving geometric proof problems. This research was a qualitative descriptive study with research subjects 3 out of 32 students of the 2nd semester Mathematics Education study program. The research instrument is the researcher himself, who is assisted with geometric proof problem tests and interview guidelines. Data analysis was including reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The validity of the research data was tested using methods triangulation. The research results show that subjects with a proof ability of K2 can build and clarify geometric concepts/principles and can assess the reasonableness of ideas even though the subject feels unsure about their choice. Subjects with a proof ability of K3 can build and clarify geometric concept/principle ideas but cannot assess the reasonableness of proof ideas. Subjects with a proof ability of K4 can build ideas of geometric concepts/principles, can clarify even though they are incomplete, and cannot assess the reasonableness of proof ideas. Students need to be equipped with decision-making skills in solving proof problems as preparation to become mathematics teachers in the future.

Abstract

Innovative learning models have an influence on student achievement. This study aims to determine whether the PBL learning model is more effective than the STAD learning model (learning model that has been applied in schools) on mathematics learning achievement, whether there is a difference in the effect of the AQ of climber, camper, and quitter category students on mathematics learning achievement, and whether there is the interaction between the learning model and students' AQ on mathematics learning achievement. This research is in the form of quantitative research. The sample was taken using a simple random sampling technique where the experimental class was taught using the PBL learning model and the control class was taught using the STAD learning model. The data collection technique used the Questionnaire method for AQ data and the test method for students' mathematics learning achievement data. The data technique used a two-way unequal cell analysis of variance test with a 2×3 matrix and a further test using the Scheffe test. The results of hypothesis testing with a significance level (α) = 5% indicate that there is a difference in the effect of the learning model on mathematics learning achievement (Fobs=19.97 and Fα=4.13), there are differences in the effect of each AQ category on mathematics learning achievement (Fobs=94.59 and Fα=3.28), and there is no interaction between the learning model and students' AQ on mathematics learning achievement (Fobs=2.39 and Fα=3.28).

Abstract

The development of the digitalization period is increasingly widespread and requires adaptation of human resources to adapt to today's technology. This is related to the transition period that occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic, during which time all activities were carried out in the learning process boldly and face-to-face learning was not permitted. This really requires adaptation and improvisation for all teachers in Indonesia, especially at Panjeng State Elementary School, Ponorogo district, who are required to be proficient in using electronic devices, especially smartphones and computers. This training is intended to equip all Panjeng State Elementary School teachers in Jenangan District, Ponorogo Regency with skills in creating and managing learning media for students, both digital and non-digital. The aim of this training is to create digital-based learning media and create non-digital learning media, which includes theoretical and practical implementation components. Therefore, the Mathematics Education Study Program at Universitas PGRI Madiun is collaborating with KKN students in 2024 to carry out learning media training activities for Panjeng State Elementary School Teachers in Ponorogo Regency. The activity sessions were divided into two, namely the first training session from the KKN students by creating non-digital based learning media or concrete media and the second training session from the lecturers by creating digital based learning media. The training was carried out smoothly and the success of the activity was seen from the enthusiastic activities of the teachers in observing the media creation process, as well as post-activity evaluation and monitoring where the teachers applied the learning media used in the learning process.

Abstract

When solving problems, the spontaneous actions of students identified as slow learners (SL) often reflect their cognitive limitations. This study analyzed students' SL understanding of mathematical concepts through representational gestures as a means of communication in constructing concepts. A qualitative case study was conducted in a public junior high school in Lamongan Regency. From eight SL students identified through IQ tests and teacher interviews, only three consistently used representational gestures and were selected as the subjects. Although limited, this sample enabled an in-depth analysis while acknowledging restricted generalization. Data were collected through functional tasks, gesture observations, and interviews and were then analyzed interactively through data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that SL students frequently used hand gestures to represent graph axes or intersection points but misinterpreted variable relationships. They could only classify objects based on conceptual conditions, while other indicators of understanding were not attained. These findings suggest that teachers should consider students’ gestures not only as spontaneous expressions but also as diagnostic cues for misconceptions and as a support for mathematical communication.
