Abstract

Connection ability is one of the mathematical skills standards that students must possess. Mathematical connection ability is the capability to relate mathematics to other fields of study as well as to mathematics itself. In the mathematics instruction for Class X MP 2, based on the results of an initial assessment, it was found that only 20% of students had a sufficiently good connection ability, while the remaining 80% lacked this skill. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using the discovery learning model to improve the mathematical connection ability of Class X students at SMK Negeri 5 Madiun in exponent material. The study uses a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method, conducted over two cycles. The subjects of the study were 31 students from Class X MP 2 at SMK Negeri 5 Madiun. The study was conducted through several stages in each cycle, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. The results of this study showed an increase in students' mathematical connection abilities through the application of the discovery learning model. Learning using the discovery learning model in mathematics for Class X MP 2 at SMK Negeri 5 Madiun can enhance students' mathematical connection abilities from 46.67% in the pre-cycle, 68.33% in Cycle I, to 78.3% in Cycle II.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan meningkatkan pemahaman konsep matematika siswa SMK pada materi statistika melalui pendekatan Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL). Kata kunci: Pendekatan Pembelajaran, Teaching at the Right Level, Pemahaman Konsep, Statistika. Abstract:  Conceptual understanding is an essential aspect of the learning process. Students can develop their abilities in each subject matter by understanding the concept. Understanding mathematical concepts is very important for learning mathematics in a meaningful way. Based on the initial assessment carried out in mathematics learning for grade XI, it was found that 23 out of 31 students had poor conceptual understanding. This study aimed to improve students' mathematicalconceptual understanding of SMK in statistics material by teaching at the right level (TARL) approach. This study was conducted using a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design with 31 students as subjects in grade XI BD 1. The study was conducted in several stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. Students' mathematical conceptual understanding at the pre-cycle stage was at an average of 44.4%, included in the "inferior" category. After applying the TaRL approach, the average understanding of students' mathematical concepts in cycle 1 increased to 61.8%, which was included in the "poor" category. In cycle 2, students' mathematical conceptual understanding increased to 80.8%, which was included in the "sufficient" category. The indicator of conceptual understanding in the ability to group items according to idea criteria experienced the greatest increase. The interviews with students show that the TaRL approach provides positive benefits for improving students' understanding of mathematical concepts, while some students have difficulty adjusting to the more reflective and interactive TaRL approach. The TaRL approach works well and can improve students' understanding of mathematical concepts in vocational high schools. However, more adjustments are needed to help students who are still experiencing difficulties.  Keywords: Teaching at the Right Level, TaRL, Understanding Concepts, Understanding Mathematical Concepts.
