Abstract

The important matter about biogas as an alternative energy source was the presence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) which is very corrosive. The biogas desulfurization process was absolutely necessary to reduce the risk of damage to the equipment. For small-scale applications, the selection of the type of adsorbent became important to reduce additional costs. One alternative material that can be used was iron gram waste. The aim of this study was to investigate the use of iron gram waste resulting from the machining practicum process at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Politeknik Negeri Semarang as an alternative material for making adsorbents. Iron gram waste was processed into Iron (III) Oxide (Fe2O3) and Iron (III) Hydroxide (Fe(OH)3), formed into billets with an average billet mass of 250 gr. The performance test of the adsorbent in the biogas desulfurization process was carried out under conditions of variation in the flow rate of biogas feed 1, 2, and 3 liters per minute, and the volume of biogas purified in one process was 50 liters. As a result, the most optimum performance was obtained in the test with a feed biogas flow rate of 1 liter/minute, with a percentage reduction in H2S levels contained in the biogas by an average of 82,56%.

Abstract

This research was conducted to evaluate air conditioning systems in pharmaceutical warehouses against the ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE ventilation standards 170 ”“ 2008 and SNI-03-6572-2001. The method used is to calculate the cooling load on the FCU (Fan Coil Unit) using the CLTD (Cooling Load Temperature Difference) method and calculate the External Static Pressure on the ducting system. The analysis is carried out by comparing the results of calculating the FCU requirements with the actual specifications that have been implemented. Furthermore, the measurement results of the existing room air condition are compared with the standards for pharmaceutical warehouse applications. The calculation results show that the pharmaceutical warehouse has a cooling load of 47,472.72 Btu/hr, and has an external static pressure of 123 Pa. While the selected FCU (Fan Coil Unit) has a capacity of 78,771 Btu/hr and a maximum external static pressure of 130 Pa with a rated airflow of 4000 m3/hr. After 9 years of use, it is known that the rated airflow has decreased by around 37% of the FCU capacity. Existing room air conditions obtained the extreme temperature and RH of 23.36 °C and 72%, respectively.

Abstract

Large-scale compressed air equipment is the only way to meet the demand for air for production facilities such as the pharmaceutical, automotive, or combustion processes industries. As one of the main driving components in the air compressor system, the double screw determines the reliability and performance of the entire compressed air system. Double screw compressors are a promising option for use in large-scale compressed air systems due to their high efficiency and reliability. The double screw profile has been specially designed to increase compression capability over a period of more than 24 hours with a range of 400 to 385 m3 per hour. The cooling oil works well keeping the compressor temperature constant at around 100 0C, even though there are very active temperature fluctuations. On the working pressure side the compressor as a whole is constant, although there is a significant spike in the dryer pressure. The dryer pressure experienced a significant increase reaching 6.9 Bar in the sixth data collection, while the cooling oil pressure and tank pressure were the same at 6.6 Bar, and the air pressure was 6.3 Bar. The results of observing the performance of compressors during industrial operation have presented the ideal working conditions for double screw compressors reaching 58.4 kJ/kg, while the actual working conditions of compressors are 66.6 kJ/kg. Overall, the average compressor efficiency is 87.81%.

Abstract

Electricity has become one of the most crucial components of life. The steam power plant (PLTU) is the most significant contributor to the power supply process in Indonesia, with an installed capacity of 29.57%. A review of each component is required to support the sustainability of the production process at PLTU. This research discusses the heat exchanger's components in the refrigeration system at PT. XYZ. The cooling system in PLTU plays a vital role in preventing overheating of the power plant components, which can cause an interruption of the energy generation process. Following this, research was carried out on the influence of load changes on the efficiency of heat exchangers in PT. XYZ cooling systems using observation methods, interviews, and literature studies. Such methods produced data that could be used to calculate the efficiency value. From the results of the investigation, it was concluded that the performance of the PT. XYZ heat exchanger was at its best at maximum load with an efficiency presentation of 68.29% and at its lowest at minimum load with an effectiveness presentation of 59.95%. However, the value was still below the standard value of efficiency of the heat exchangers, which is 75%, so it required more intensive treatment to improve its efficiency value.
