Abstract

Abstract

Dogs are one of the pet animals that have a loyal nature and are widely cared for in the community. It is not uncommon for dogs to often play in parks or outdoor environments that are surrounded by grass to play with their owners. The grass is a breeding ground for ticks, which can be vectors of disease carriers for dogs. Babesiosis is a disease caused by Babesia sp. and is transmitted by tick vectors. In this paper, we will discuss the clinical condition, diagnosis, and treatment of one dog with babesiosis at the Lilipoet clinic, Yogyakarta. A Shih-Tzu dog has clinical symptoms of fever with a temperature of 39.9oC, decreased appetite, and has a history of yellow vomiting, and found one tick. Blood was collected for microscopic examination of blood smears, blood hematologic, and molecular examination. Hematologic examination of the blood showed the value of thrombocytopenia with a value of 32 x 103/µL. Molecular examination with Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) showed positive results of Babesia sp. with visible DNA bands at 490bp. Treatment was carried out by giving one dose of antiprotozoal diminazen aceturate 3.5 mg/kg BW and doxycycline 10mg/kg BW once a day for 14 days.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the correlation between ERVM scores and the levels of estrogen and progesterone in Aceh cows during estrus. This study utilized 8 clinically healthy Aceh cows aged 3-5 years. ERVM scores were determined using a DraminskiTMestrus detector probe insertedinto the vagina on the first day of estrus. Estrogen and progesterone concentrations were measured in blood samples collected on the first day of estrususing the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Data on the correlation between ERVM scores and the levels of estrogen andprogesterone concentrations were analyzed using the Pearson correlation test. The results showed that the average ERVM score during the estrusphase was 192.9216.94 , and the average concentrations of estrogen and progesterone were 103.1344.86 pg/mL and 0.960.60 ng/mL,respectively. Correlation analysis revealed that coefficient correlation (r) values between EVRM and estrogen was -0.607 and with progesterone was-0.149. In conclusion, the ERVM score in Aceh cattle indicates moderate estrus, and the ERVM score obtained in this study is negatively correlatedwith estrogen and progesterone concentrations.

Abstract

Momordica charantia L., commonly known as bitter melon, is a medicinal plant that contains various bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, tannins, triterpenoids, and alkaloids. These compounds have potential antifertility properties. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of bitter melon extract as an antifertility agent in female animals. A total of 18 female mice (Mus musculus L.) were divided into three groups: a control group (K0), treatment group 1 (P1) received 5% bitter melon extract, and treatment group 2 (P2) received 10% extract. The mice (Mus musculus L.) were orally administered the extract for 16 consecutive days using the gavage method. On the final day of treatment, the mice were dissected to isolate the ovaries. The ovaries were weighed and processed for histological examination using the paraffin method and Hematoxylin-Eosin staining. The observed parameters included the number of primary, secondary, tertiary, and Graafian follicles. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Duncan’s post hoc test to determine statistical differences among groups. The results showed that administration of 5% bitter melon extract significantly increased the number of primary and secondary follicles. However, at the 10% concentration, a reduction was observed in the number of all follicle types, including Graafian follicles. These findings indicate that low-dose bitter melon extract may promote ovarian follicle development, whereas high-dose administration exhibits antifertility potential through a phytoestrogen mechanism that inhibits follicular maturation.
