By using the in- depth interviews method, the idea, hope, expectation of inhabitants was gained. 30 respondents were taken from 3 local sub district area. The results showed that the households’ needs can be observed through their activities. Households’ activities determine their requirements for the houses design. The kind of activities also influence the houses design and it’s attributes (e.g size, the type of space). By comparing the attributes of the houses and households’ requirements, the design is determined. In which kinds of tourism activities are included in their daily activities.

Abstract

In recent years, home-based enterprises have been giving significant implications for the economic improvement of the middle-low income community in Surabaya. With all of the limitations that exist, space, complex activities, and community acceptance become predictors that influence the formation of people-place relationship. Previous studies that tend to focus on the use of space are less concerned with the interaction undertaken by entrepreneurs which make them choose to continue their business where they have started. The dynamics of daily life in shaping social relations and functionality of place will affect how entrepreneurs perceive and assess their home-environment. Thus, it is important to highlight the process of the emerging attachment related to the use of a home for generating additional income. As the nature of place attachment which is multidisciplinary and socially constructed, this paper provides reviews on different paradigms, conceptualizations, and attachment types that should be used as analytical frameworks in the context of productive housing. A rich literature study aims to give further insight without ignoring the natural settings of the research context. By emphasizing the role of life experience of entrepreneurs, a more fruitful understanding towards accumulative assessment and perceived environment that triggers place attachment could be obtained in the future research.

Abstract

The development of Pontianak begins from the influence of the existence of the Kapuas River and its tributaries. The river used to be a space for community activities, with many houses and villages built based on their proximity to the river. The settlement grew to fill the land on the banks of Kapuas River first until they spread to its tributaries. This research aims to identify the typology of settlement development in riverside communities in Pontianak from time to time. This research employed a qualitative method with a comparative study. The researcher collected secondary data in the form of a map of the condition of settlements in Pontianak from time to time obtained from the historical records of Pontianak. Then, the data were compared and analyzed to obtain a typology of settlement development in the riverside communities in Pontianak. The study’s results, namely the typology of settlements on the riverbanks in Pontianak, revealed the settlements that follow the structure of the riverbanks, ditch canals, and the settlements that lead to land roads. This can happen because of an increase in the number of people every year, accessibility range, and economic movement factors.
