Abstract

In a world where bilingualism is prevalent, people often naturally use code-mixing and code-switching as expressive tools in their language activities. This research aims to analyze the types of code-mixing and code-switching, the reasons for their use, and the matrix language in the interview between Maudy Ayunda and Robert on Perspektif Metro TV. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data obtained from the conversation between Maudy Ayunda and Robert. Using a qualitative approach and non-invasive observation techniques, the data were analyzed based on Hoffman's theory of code-mixing and code-switching. The results indicate that the speakers employed three types of code-mixing (intra-sentential, intra-lexical, and changes in pronunciation) and two types of code-switching (inter-sentential and establishing continuity with the previous speaker). The motivations for using these codes included discussing specific topics, quoting someone, emphasizing points, repeating for clarification, and explaining content to the interlocutor. Code-mixing was used more frequently than code-switching. In conclusion, Indonesian served as the matrix language and English as the embedded language in the instances of code-mixing and code-switching observed. The findings have significant implications for the education field, particularly in multilingual and bilingual settings. Recognizing and integrating code-mixing and code-switching as legitimate and beneficial linguistic practices can enhance language learning by creating an inclusive environment where students feel comfortable using multiple languages. Educators can leverage these practices to improve engagement, comprehension, and expression in complex subjects, fostering a deeper understanding and better communication skills among students. Future research should investigate these phenomena across diverse contexts and larger samples to further validate and extend these findings, thereby enriching bilingual education strategies.

Abstract

This literature review focuses on the study of the effectiveness of blended learning models in developing English language skills in higher education. This study aims to analyze the role of blended learning in improving language skills and technological readiness and identifying barriers faced in its implementation. This study is a systematic literature review that uses the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Guidelines as a model in the process of selecting and analysing literature data conducted on 30 articles from national and international journals indexed by Scopus and Sinta 2 and 3. The study results indicate that blended learning can significantly contribute to students' English skills. Still, its effectiveness is highly dependent on the support of technological infrastructure and the technical skills of users. Barriers such as limited internet access, gaps in technological knowledge, and preferences for face-to-face learning are obstacles that need to be overcome to optimize this model. The implications of this study highlight the importance of developing technological infrastructure, special training for lecturers and students, and more adaptive learning designs to optimize blended learning in higher education. This study contributes to providing comprehensive insights into modern learning strategies in the digital era

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe research aims to explore the relationship between involvement in organizations, hobbies, self-discipline, and academic success of students at the Faculty of Computer Science (FILKOM) Universitas Putra Indonesia (YPTK) Padang, especially students who are in the Sixth Semester. It applies a correlational quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design to identify the relationship between these variables. The research sample consisted of 150–200 students selected randomly using simple random sampling techniques. Data was collected through an online questionnaire, which included questions regarding organizational involvement, hobbies, self-discipline, and academic achievement. The research results show that involvement in organizations, hobbies, and self-discipline have a significant relationship with students' academic success. The results of multiple linear regression analysis show that these three factors together can explain 46% of the variation in student academic success. Involvement in organizations contributes to improving social and managerial skills, hobbies play a role in maintaining psychological well-being and managing stress, and self-discipline helps students to stay focused and avoid procrastination. This research provides important insight that to achieve academic success, students need to develop involvement in organizations, positive hobbies, and self-discipline in a balanced way. Suggestions are given for educational institutions to provide facilities and programs that holistically support this third factor's development.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of movie-based training on enhancing English literacy among high school students. Employing a quantitative approach, it explores the relationship between movie-based English communication training and its effect on literacy skills. The research involves 57 high school students from private schools. The SEM PLS technique was utilized for data analysis. Validity tests confirmed the reliability of all survey items, with indicators exceeding a 0.5 loading factor. The study's focus is the direct impact of understanding English communication through movies on student literacy. Notable findings were observed at Ar-Raudhatul Hasanah private school, where a significant correlation was established, indicated by a p-value of less than 0.05 and a t-value of 6.774, surpassing the threshold of 2.008 indicating a significant influence of movie-based training on enhancing English communication skills. This suggests that such training could be beneficial not only for students but for a broader audience as well.

Abstract

Researchers have extensively studied the linguistic characteristics of research article (RA) titles. However, no research has investigated RA titles viewed from research design types published in national and international English Language Teaching (ELT) journals. Thus, the present study aims to fill this gap by investigating the average word length, syntactic structure, and syntactic structure type based on research design. This study used a comparative mixed method design to analyze 120 RA titles published in 2022-2023. The average length of titles was analyzed by counting the parts of speech of the tiles, the syntactic structures of titles were analyzed using the Framework of Cheng et al. (2012), and syntactic structure types based on research design were analyzed by reading the method section of the articles. Results indicate that the average length of the RA titles was 12 words in national journals and 13 words in international journals. Nominal structure was the most used RA title type in national journals, while compound structure was the most used in international journals. Furthermore, the nominal structure was often used for experimental design in international journals, while it was often used for descriptive study design in national journals. The compound and Verb-ing phrase structures were often used for case study design in both international and national journals. In conclusion, there are important differences and similarities in RA title characteristics between the two groups of ELT journal rankings. The findings contribute to the scholarship on the contrastive aspect of titling practices in English for Publishing Purposes.Â
