Abstract

This research investigates the significance of khidmah, or service, in the Islamic boarding school tradition as a means of gaining access to the esoteric components of Islamic education, particularly blessings. The motivation, process, and service orientation of musaidin students (serving students) at the Darullughah Wadda'wah Islamic Boarding School are the topic of this study. This qualitative study included 26 Musaidin students as participants, with data collected through in-depth interviews. The analysis was carried out by reducing, coding, and establishing themes. According to the findings of this study, the importance of loyalty to teachers and conformity with the norms of Islamic boarding schools carried out by Santri Musaidin in order to receive blessings. Santri Musaidin's compliance has an impact on positive behavior change, better living situations, economic well-being, and social acceptance. The experience of Santri Musaidin has transformed Islamic education not only in terms of greater knowledge, but also in terms of moral and spiritual growth.

Abstract

Digital transformation has changed the landscape of Islamic da'wah in Indonesia, including in the production and dissemination of exclusive religious discourse by Salafi groups. This study analyzes the Instagram account @ittiba_salaf, which consistently frames religious pluralism as a deviation from Islamic creed, by referring to verses of the Qur’an and hadith. This study uses Robert M. Entman's framing analysis approach, which includes four main elements—problem definition, cause diagnosis, moral evaluation, and solution recommendation—combined with  Maʿānī al-Ḥadīth analysis to reveal the ideological instruments underlying the use of hadith. The findings show that this account constructs pluralism as a theological and ideological threat, associated with Western liberalism and categorized as a form of kufr. This narrative represents theological reductionism that ignores the complexity of Indonesia’s pluralistic society. This study emphasizes that digital da'wah not only conveys religious messages, but also becomes an arena for contestation over the meaning and authority of Islam, requiring a moderate hermeneutical approach to bridge theological commitments with the reality of societal diversity.

Abstract

The phenomenon of child exploitation on social media shows an alarming escalation, especially when children—even infants—are actively involved in the production of digital content to attract public sympathy or financial gain. This study analyzes child exploitation practices through a netnographic approach, focusing on a viral case of an orphanage in Medan that exploited children for live streaming on TikTok to obtain donations. Through stages of investigation, interaction, immersion, and integration, this research evaluates audience responses, digital interaction dynamics, and the psychological impact on children. Findings indicate that this exploitation blurs the boundaries between private and public spaces in children's lives and normalizes the commodification of children in the digital economy. From an Islamic perspective, these actions contradict the ethical principles of parenting taught by the Prophet Muhammad, which emphasize love, protection of dignity, and the spiritual responsibility of parents. Thus, the prophetic values in parenting hadiths can serve as an ethical foundation for building fair, humane, and Islam-compliant digital parenting practices.

Abstract

The transmission of Islamism among the kiais and their students in Madura has become more critical to examine in the last decade. However, some kiais of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) in Bangkalan Madura see that Islamism or political Islam will gradually erode their national commitment. This article intends to reinterpret the nationalism vision of several kiais of NU and measure the extent of their views on the ideology of Islamism discoursed by the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI). By interviewing several kiais, this study finds that the propagation of Islamism in Bangkalan has not been as massive as occurred in Pamekasan, another sub-districts in Madura. The FPI-style Islamism in Bangkalan has been propagated only by a small group though they are vigorously active on social media. The majority of the NU community remains devoted to nationalism, committing that the NKRI is the final state. Islamic moderation promulgated by the kiais has been widely accepted and deeply rooted among the NU community. They believe nationalism and religion should not be separated from the spirit of their struggle (khittah). These two elements have united within their fighting spirit and become the primary trigger in devoting themselves to the nation and state to preserve national sovereignty and the integrity of Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

This article critically discusses the content of tweets expressing Islamist women’s activism on #Womenneedkhilafah, which is mostly followed by Indonesia’s middle-class Muslimah. A qualitative method with the Foucauldian discourse analysis approach is applied in this study. The findings have revealed that the hashtag #womenneedkhilafah is constructed through the knowledge-power relations of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia’s Islamist ideology grounded in a literal-textual theological argument in which the propagation of Islamism and independent Islamic state or caliphate becomes the main goal. The manifestation of the power-knowledge relation is conducted by limiting women’s role, mobility, and authority over their bodies. HTI limits women’s mobility in "male" public space and considers women's primary role to be the family caregiver, particularly to educate their children and simultaneously to prepare a new and stronger generation of HTI.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the rajah as an Islamic talisman occupies a contested discursive space between theological legitimacy and strong condemnation as a practice of shirk. This debate is rooted in the diversity of the Prophet’s hadith, which, on the one hand, allows ruqyah as long as it is free from elements of shirk, but on the other hand, categorically condemns all forms of talismans. Whereas previously the relevant authority of the rajah was determined through fatwas issued by religious scholars and local religious practices, now the discourse has shifted to the digital realm, mainly through memes and educational content that represent sacred symbols in the form of criticism, satire, and esoteric narratives. This article employs a netnographic approach to discuss the construction of meaning of the rajah in memes on social media and netizens’ responses to them, while also analyzing them from the perspective of hadith interpretation. The study argues that netizen involvement does not stop at spontaneous reactions, but forms a continuum of discourse: from humorous deconstruction to firm normative affirmation, then continuing to historical-esoteric interpretations. These findings confirm that rajah in the digital public sphere is a locus of popular theology that negotiates Islamic orthodoxy, local traditions, and contemporary digital culture.

Abstract

The phenomenon of pranks on social media has developed into a form of entertainment that is fraught with ethical and moral issues, especially when carried out without considering the psychological impact on the victims. Although it often receives positive responses from netizens, this type of content essentially indicates a tolerance for symbolic violence in the digital space. This article analyzes Abdullah Gymnastiar’s (Aa Gym) critical response to prank practices from an Islamic ethical perspective, which was uploaded to Aa Gym’s YouTube account on May 9, 2022, entitled “Celakanya Prank yang Mendzolimi Orang Lain-kajian singkat Aa Gym”, with reference to the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad about joking, particularly in Sunan Abī Dāwūd. This study uses Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis approach through three stages: (1) text analysis as a representation of something that contains a certain ideology because it wants to see how reality is formed in the text to identify lexical, sentence structure, rhetorical style, and intonation; (2) discourse practice analysis to understand the context of the production and dissemination of the message in digital media, and (3) socio-cultural practice analysis to relate the findings to Islamic ethical norms and the dynamics of online humor culture. This study explores the construction of language, moral values, and religious norms in Aa Gym’s digital dakwah content and its implications for public understanding of ethical boundaries in online humor culture. The analysis reveals that Aa Gym emphasizes the importance of responsible humor that entertains without hurting or degrading others. This study underscores the importance of ethical reflection on digital humor practices and the need to reevaluate the boundaries of decency in jokes. Thus, this article contributes to the discourse on media ethics and contemporary da‘wah, while highlighting the relevance of Islamic norms in responding to the challenges of popular culture in the digital age.

Abstract

This article critically examines the use of hadith in constructing the anti-Maulid narrative concerning the celebration of the Prophet’s Birthday disseminated through the Instagram account @foto.video.islam, using Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as an analytical lens. The study focuses on how Salafi ideology is articulated and propagated through religious discourse in the digital sphere. The research problem addresses how hadiths are selectively cited to delegitimize the celebration of the Prophet’s Birthday while undermining the authority of scholars who support it. This qualitative descriptive study analyzes the macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure of the discourse produced by the account. The findings demonstrate that the use of hadith functions as a tool of ideological legitimation, consolidating Salafi authority within the digital space and marginalizing alternative perspectives in the broader landscape of Islamic intellectual traditions. This strategy is not merely textual or jurisprudential but reflects complex ideological operations that shape perceptions and religious orientations in contemporary digital public spheres. The study also highlights the importance of critical awareness regarding the politicization of religious texts and underscores the need for ethical dialogue and mutual respect across theological differences, ensuring that sectarian divergences do not become sources of social conflict or hierarchical domination. Overall, the research shows that digital anti-Maulid discourse mobilizes hadith as a means to construct and maintain religious authority, while emphasizing the broader implications for critical engagement and responsible communication in diverse Islamic communities.[Artikel ini secara kritis menelaah penggunaan hadis dalam konstruksi narasi anti-Maulid mengenai perayaan Maulid Nabi yang disebarkan melalui akun Instagram @foto.video.islam, dengan menggunakan lensa Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA).

Abstract

The idea of producing religious science is known not only in Iran and the Islamic world but also in the Western world. This idea has created movements in the Western world and the Islamic world in the field of science production, which are mainly divided into three perspectives. In the sources of science production, a group has given originality to naqlī (narrative) knowledge, a group to human knowledge and experimental sciences, and the third group confirmed both views and considered the way to acquire knowledge to be both intellect and narration. Abdulkarim Soroush is among those who have given originality to experimental sciences and knowledge in this field. In this article, an attempt is made to explain the nature of religious science with a descriptive-analytical method, examine and explain Soroush’s point of view, and state his bases and arguments in explaining this theory, and finally to criticize his point of view. Confusion of the two authorities of demonstration and confirmation, failure to provide a criterion for judging between religion and human knowledge in times of conflict, and the invalidity of generalizing historical evidence to all ages are some of the things that undermine the acceptance of Soroush’s theory.
