Abstract

Alley cropping system has been widely understood as a very effective in soil and water conservation paractices. This system is able to decrease surface run off, and at the same time increase soil fertility and productivity. However, there is also a possibility the occurence of a detrimental effect due to crop competition between the hedgerow crops and the crops. An experiment has been conducted to study the competition between the food crops and the hedgerow crops in alley cropping system. The meassurement was carried out at Jatikerto, in 2002. The hedgerow crops used in this experiment were: (a) without hedgerows, as a control, (b) Gliricidia planted with stem cutting, (c) Gliricidia planted with seed. (c) elephant grass, and (d) Vetiver. The food crops planted in the row was rainy season maize, and followed by dry season maize. The experiment results show that in Gliricidia hedgerow, both planted with seed and stem cutting, there was a light competition and no nitrogen nutrient competition. In elephant grass hedgerow, there was a nitrogen nutrient competition. When there was enough rain, although the crops water used in alley cropping system is higher than that in non alley system, there is no significant competition in crop water used. Crop water competition, especially in Gliricidia and elephant grass hedgerow, occurred during limited water avalibility at dry season

Abstract

Field experiments had been carried out to study the effect of 10 years alley cropping system on surface run off and soil erosion. Experiments were carried out on Alfisols at Jatikerto, Malang and on Vertisols at Ngrimbi, Jombang, East Java. The results showed that after 10 years planting tree crops and or grass as hedgerow in between food crops very efeective to decrease surface run off and soil erosion. After 10 years of planting the tree crops, the alley cropping system could decrease surface run off and soil erosion more than 40% (compared to that of the non alley cropping system) At the same time, soil erosion decrease up to 60% of the non alley treatment. The use grass as hedgerow crops yielded a better result, in term of surface run off and soil erosion. A comparison between tree species, Flemingia and Gliricidia are better than Leucaena

Abstract

An experiment had been carried out to study the potential of alley cropping system for rehabilitation of eroded soil. The experiment was carried out on Vertisols at Ngrimbi, Jombang, East Java. The results showed that planting Gliricidia as an hedgerow crop in an alley cropping system improved the properties and fertility of eroded Vertisols. After 10 years of the practice, there was an increase in soil organic-C, soil N, Soil-P, and soil-K. As a result of increasing soil organic-C, there was an improvement of soil aggregation, water holding capacity, and available soil water. Improvement of soil fertility with alley cropping resulted in an increase of maize and soybean yields. The yields of maize and soybean in a non alley cropping system, on the other hand, constantly decreased with time
