Abstract

This study aims to reveal the representation of academic writing skills among students of the Studi Independen Bersertifikat (SIB) E-Commerce through an analysis of the transitivity system in their final reports. The analysis focuses on the types of processes present in the reports, including material, mental, relational (attributive and identifying), verbal, existential, and behavioral processes. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive research design. The data source consists of academic texts in the form of final reports written by ten students or participants of SIB E-Commerce from batch 1 to batch 3 (2021—2023). The findings indicate that material processes are the most dominantly used by the students, followed by relational attributive, relational identifying, and mental processes. Meanwhile, the use of existential and verbal processes is relatively limited, and behavioral processes are absent. The dominance of material processes suggests that students represent their experiences by describing physical activities or concrete actions undertaken during the program. This reflects the students’ tendency to narrate their knowledge and practical experiences through concrete descriptions of activities.

Abstract

The purpose of writing this study is to describe how Ustaz Khalid Basalamah views the female body and what kind of patriarchal language is used by Ustaz Khalid Basalamah.  The method used is a qualitative analysis using analytical theory. The data (7-minute Youtube video transcript) was taken based on deliberate stratified sampling and analyzed using the Halliday MAK transitivity system and the three-domain interaction of JR Martin and PRR White's valuation theory. It was found that from the language of Khalid Basalamah's lectures, the discourse on the female body was operationalized based on the idea of tabarruj in Islam. This operation largely spreads relational processes and negative evaluations in intensive heteroglossia expression. Basalamah, in her talk, assesses women's behavior through the purpose of women dressing up and embellishing; patriarchal language towards women's bodies in her lectures uses more material processes, followed by relational processes. With this Basalamah places women's bodies as an important discourse to be supervised and controlled by men. Furthermore, it means that men have power over women's bodies, while women must obey their husbands.

Abstract

This text-oriented discourse analysis aims to evaluate and compare the language voiced by the two Islamic female clerics’ (Ustazah Aisah Dahlan and Mamah Dedeh) in their preaching as well as their stances towards the Discourse of Muslim Woman’s Body, Sexuality and Domestication posted on their affiliated Youtube accounts during this Covid-19 pandemic. The data (two video transcripts with the duration 09 minutes 04 seconds and 42 minutes and 54 seconds, respectively) were taken based on stratified purposeful sampling. Using transitivity system (ideational metafunction of language) postulated by M.A.K. Halliday(2014) and language evaluation theory (interpersonal metafunction of language) developed by Martin and White (2005), it was found that Aisah Dahlan’s preaching was dominated by attributive relational process and positive judgment in heteroglossic expressions to justify Muslim men’s attitudes and behaviors, whereas negative judgment in force expressions were deployed in discussing the Muslim woman’s body, sexuality, and domestication discourse. On the contrary, Mamah Dedeh’s preaching was dominated by the material process and positive judgement of sanction which indicates that husband and wife share equal responsibility in the household. Keywords: Ustazah, Text-Oriented Discourse Analysis, Muslim Woman’s Body, Islamic views on Sexuality, Domestication of  woman, Transitivity analysis, appraisal analysis

Abstract

PThis study investigates how halal values and images are represented on social media, particularly through culinary reviews on the TikTok platform. In the context of urban Muslim communities, the halal label serves not only as a marker of adherence to religious teachings but also as a representation of evolving culture and identity. Through a semiotic analysis of Ferdinand de Saussure, this study reveals how visual and narrative symbols are used by content creators to construct the meaning of halal in the digital space. The research findings indicate that halal imagery on TikTok does not always refer to official certification, but rather to social construction and perceptions of trust formed through digital narratives. This phenomenon reflects the commodification of halal, where religious values are reproduced as communication and marketing strategies within the context of digital capitalism.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates how junior high school students construct and re-encode meanings in response to misinformation about the Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) [Free Nutritious Meals] program on TikTok. It examines students’ encoding patterns in the comment space, the linguistic register and multimodal features they use, and how students’ perceptions of the hoax and teachers’ views on digital literacy contextualize these practices. Using a qualitative case study design, this study combines content analysis of 33 TikTok comments with online interviews conducted via Zoom and WhatsApp with ten students and five teachers. Inductive analysis shows five encoding forms: emotional expression (39%), direct criticism (33%), sarcasm/irony (9%), neutral clarification (15%), and others (3%). Linguistically, 70% of the comments used digital slang. Interviews indicate varied digital literacy, while teachers reported informal classroom integration. These findings underscore the need to strengthen school-based digital literacy education to support adolescents’ information resilience.

Abstract

In the 2024 Indonesian presidential election, campaign props such as banners and billboards function not only as promotional media but also as sites of ideological representation and symbolic political communication. This study aims to examine how visual elements in campaign banners construct the political identity of the Anies Baswedan–Muhaimin Iskandar (AMIN) candidate pair through the lens of visual social semiotics. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research applies Kress and van Leeuwen’s multimodal discourse framework to analyze the representational, interpersonal, and compositional metafunctions embedded in selected AMIN campaign banners. Data were collected through field observation and visual documentation and then purposively selected based on analytical relevance. The findings reveal that the AMIN campaign strategically organizes visual structures—such as gaze, gesture, color, spatial composition, and symbolic attributes—to project an image of inclusivity, credibility, and ideological commitment to social change. By integrating social semiotic theory with empirical analysis of Indonesian political campaign media, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how multimodal visual resources function as persuasive and meaning-making tools in contemporary electoral politics.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology and the high intensity of social media consumption among early adolescents have contributed to the emergence of brain rot, which negatively affects cognitive functioning. This condition highlights the urgency of examining critical literacy as an educational strategy to strengthen adolescents’ cognitive resilience. This study aims to systematically analyze the role of critical literacy in addressing brain rot among early adolescents based on recent scientific evidence. This study employed a systematic journal review design guided by the PRISMA framework. Relevant articles were retrieved from multiple international and national databases using strict inclusion criteria. A total of ten primary studies were analyzed through thematic synthesis. The findings indicate that excessive digital media consumption is associated with decreased attention, memory impairment, and shallow cognitive engagement among early adolescents. Critical literacy was found to enhance reflective and evaluative thinking as well as awareness of algorithmic manipulation in digital media. Moreover, the integration of critical literacy supports improved self-regulation and cognitive resilience. In conclusion, critical literacy represents an effective preventive and corrective strategy in addressing brain rot among early adolescents.
