Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of role play in improving students’ speaking skills and explores the challenges and strategies associated with its implementation. Employing Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the methodology, the study involved 19 students over three weeks, incorporating pre-tests, role play activities, and post-tests. The results revealed significant improvements in students’ speaking abilities, with the average score rising from 27.2 to 42. Pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension improved from the “poor” to “fair” category, while vocabulary and grammar showed progress but remained “poor.” The role play activities, based on realistic scenarios, enhanced students’ confidence and interactive communication skills. Data from rubrics, observations, and questionnaires supported these findings, confirming the technique’s effectiveness. However, the study highlights the need for additional strategies to address persistent weaknesses in vocabulary and grammar. These findings contribute to practical teaching methods, offering insights into integrating role play to foster more effective communication in diverse educational settings.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of Knoword, a gamified online tool, in improving students' vocabulary acquisition. Vocabulary mastery plays a crucial role in language learning, yet many students, particularly in public schools, struggle with insufficient vocabulary knowledge due to factors like low engagement and traditional teaching methods. This research addresses these challenges by exploring how digital tools can enhance learning outcomes. The study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the methodology, conducted in a public high school in Batam with 42 students in the 10th grade. The research process consisted of a learning cycle involving planning, action, observation, and reflection. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered to measure students’ vocabulary skills before and after implementing Knoword. Observations during classroom sessions also provided qualitative data on student engagement and motivation. The results showed a significant improvement in students' vocabulary acquisition. The average pre-test score was 51.59, categorized as poor, while the post-test score increased to 83.05, classified as good, with a 31.47% improvement. The findings indicate that the use of Knoword enhanced students' motivation, engagement, and vocabulary retention, making it an effective tool for vocabulary learning. The study concludes that incorporating gamified learning platforms can significantly improve vocabulary acquisition and student outcomes, especially in educational environments where traditional methods have shown limited effectiveness.

Abstract

This study presents a needs-based analysis and the development of an English language skills module specifically designed for front office employees at a local hotel in Batam, Indonesia. Using a Research and Development (R&D) approach and the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), the module was developed based on Hutchinson & Waters' needs analysis framework. Data were collected through interviews with four front office employees, while two experts—a hotel manager and an ESP lecturer—validated the module. The analysis revealed that employees primarily struggled with listening comprehension, speaking fluency, and confidence when interacting with international guests. The findings imply that conducting a thorough needs analysis is crucial for developing effective English training materials in the hospitality industry. Without understanding the specific language challenges faced by front office employees, training programs risk being irrelevant or ineffective. This study highlights that a conducted needs analysis leads to more targeted, practical modules that directly address real workplace communication problems. It also underscores the importance of aligning training content with employee needs to improve service quality, enhance guest satisfaction, and strengthen the hotel’s role in supporting regional tourism growth.

Abstract: English proficiency from an early age plays a significant role in shaping the competence of the younger generation to face global challenges. At Sanggar Belajar Tembesi Sidomulyo, English learning is not yet optimal because the teachers lack a for-mal educational background in the field, causing students to have difficulty mastering basic vocabulary, pronunciation, and understanding instructions. This research aims to address this problem by implementing an Activity Based Learning (ABL) approach, which emphasizes active student involvement through direct activities such as games, songs, visual simulations, and pronunciation exercises. This activity was carried out in four sessions on July 22, July 25, July 29, and August 4, 2025. Evaluation results indi-cate notable improvement. Among the five participating students, four students (80%) showed an average 20% increase in basic vocabulary mastery compared to pre-activity levels. Ninety percent demonstrated clearer pronunciation, and all students (100%) re-ported feeling enthusiastic and more motivated to learn. Abstract

There is an increasing importance of English speaking proficiency in today's era and there comes with challenges that students face in mastering this skill. It calls the necessity of enhancing speaking skills for 21st-century learners and proposes an innovative approach— news reporting practice aided by Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The research aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of news reporting as a method to improve students' speaking abilities, leveraging ICT tools such as video creation and platforms like "Flipgrid." Various challenges inhibiting students' progress in speaking English, such as lack of confidence, pronunciation differences, limited vocabulary, and grammar issues, are discussed. The study at Jin Seung High School focuses on assessing students' speaking skills through questionnaires and implementing interventions using video-based learning facilitated by ICT tools. The research questions revolve around the potential development of speaking skills through news reporting in ICT and the impact of ICT on students' mastery of speaking skills. The findings showed that Flipgrid effectively enhances high school students' English-speaking skills by providing a time-efficient, easy-to-use platform that boosts confidence and reduces anxiety. However, further research with larger samples and objective proficiency measures is needed to confirm these findings and address technical issues.
