Abstract

Stress is a condition that burdens a person and affects homeostasis resulting in health problems, including dental and oral health. Stress can be caused by physical, chemical, or psychological stressors. Stressors cause an increase in blood glucose levels due to an increase in the stress hormone cortisol. This study aims to determine the effect of physical-psychological and psychological stress induced by electrical foot shock on blood glucose levels in rats. This research is an experimental laboratory study with a post-test control group design using white male rats as animal stress models. Animal models were divided into six groups, namely physical-psychological stress for 7 days (PPS1), 14 days (PPS2), and 28 days (PPS3); and psychological stress for 7 days (PS1), 14 days (PS2), and 28 days (PS3). The animal models were placed in the experimental box with electrical foot shock. The physical-psychological stress treatment was to flow an electric current of 48 V, 0.5 Hz, 2 mA for 30 minutes daily. In the psychological stress treatment, the animal models were placed without an electric shock, but the animal models were placed together, given an electric shock stressor separated by transparent plastic with a thickness of 5 cm and foam at the bottom of the cage (insulator). The results showed that although there was no effect of electrical foot shock on blood glucose levels in rats experiencing physical-psychological stress for 7, 14, and 28 exposures (p0.05), electrical foot shock affected blood glucose levels in rats with psychological stress (p0.05). It can be concluded that physical-psychological and psychological stress induced by electrical foot shock affected blood glucose levels.

Abstract

Neem gum is an exudate from hardened neem plant (Azadirachta indica). Neem gum contains many active compounds especially heteropolysaccharides. It composes monosaccharides namely L-arabinose, L-fucose, D-galactose, D-glucuronic acid, D-xylose, glucose, and mannose. In addition, there are other compounds of neem gum such as NaCl, KCl, salvadora, salvadorin, saponin, phenol, and tannin have the potential to reduce the viability of pathogens. Heteropolysaccharides are water soluble non-starch carbohydrates. Heteropolysaccharides are known unable to be degraded by digestive enzymes but have potential as substrates for commensal bacteria that can benefit the host. One of the requirements for functional food ingredient is also to reduce the viability of pathogenic bacteria such as Escherecia coli and Salmonella Typhimurium. The MTT test method was used to calculate bacterial viability. The viability of two bacteria exposed to neem gum solution decreased as the concentration increased, according to the results of this study.

Abstract

Covid-19 is a respiratory obstruction caused by infection with SARS-CoV-2. The appearance of dysgeusia and anosmia can be a sign that someone has contracted this virus. This study aims to review the frequency and risk factors that cause dysgeusia and anosmia in pre-elderly post-Covid-19. This type of research is descriptive observational with a cross-sectional approach. In this study, only 5.15% of respondents experienced anosmia, 10.31% of dysgeusia alone, and 28.86% of dysgeusia accompanied by anosmia. Dysgeusia and anosmia can be found in every vaccination status. Respondents with ≥1 dominant comorbid were found in respondents who experienced dysgeusia accompanied by anosmia. Symptoms of fever, cough, rhinorrhea, and pneumonia are common in dysgeusia and anosmia disorders. The time of appearance of the disturbance ranges from 1-7 days, with the duration of the disruption 1-14 days. Symptoms of dysgeusia accompanied by anosmia in the pre-elderly post-Covid-19show a higher frequency than dysgeusia alone and anosmia alone. In pre-elderly, men were found to be more at risk than women. Several risk factors, including the aging process, co-morbidities, smoking habits, and vaccination status, support the emergence of these symptoms.

Abstract

When aging, elderly people are expected to have a good quality of life. However, the elderly are vulnerable to various dental and oral health problems such as dental caries. The impact of tooth decay affects the quality of life of the elderly regarding oral health (Oral Health Related Quality of Life). The aim of this research is to determine the relationship between risk factors for dental caries and the quality of life of the elderly in Jember district. This research was conducted from January to March 2022 in three sub-districts in Jember Regency. The total number of respondents required is 168, who are classified into the pre-elderly group (45-59 years) and the elderly group (≥60 years). The instrument used in this research was a questionnaire. Risk of dental caries using a questionnaire based on CAMBRA (Caries Management by Risk Assessment) and Quality of life related to dental health using the OHIP-14 questionnaire. The data analysis method used was statistical analysis using the Spearmen non-parametric correlation test; with a significance level of 0.01. Spearman correlation analysis shows a high correlation indicated by a figure of -0.580(**), which means it falls into the range 0.51–0.75 which is defined as having a strong relationship in the negative direction. The higher the risk factors for caries in the elderly in Jember district, the lower their quality of life.

Abstract

Neem gum is a liquid that comes out of the stems of neem plants (Azadirachta indica) that have hardened and become crystals. Soluble polysaccharides compounds contained in this gum are composed of several types of monosaccharides such as arabinose, fucose, galactose, glucuronic acid, glucose, mannose, and xylose. The content of neem gum has prebiotic potential so it can be used as a source of nutrients for lactic acid bacteria. Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus are lactic acid bacteria classified as beneficial bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. The content of soluble polysaccharides in neem gum can be selectively digested by these bacteria. This study aims to determine the potential of neem gum solution (Azadirachta indica) to the viability value of B. longum and L. acidophilus bacteria. The viability of B. longum and L. acidophilus bacteria was calculated using the MTT assay method. The results showed the viability value of both bacteria exposed to neem gum solution at concentrations of 5% (b/v), 10% (b/v), and 20% (b/v) increased compared to negative controls that were not given exposure to neem gum solution. Based on the results of the study, it concluded that neem gum is effective in increasing the growth of bacteria B. longum and L. acidophilus

Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: Tooth loss is a prevalent condition among older adults. Maintaining at least 20 teeth in the oral cavity is crucial for optimal masticatory function, which in turn is important for adequate nutrient intake, including protein necessary for muscle mass synthesis. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between the number of remaining teeth and muscle mass in women aged 45-69 years, a demographic that typically begins to experience a decrease in muscle mass. Methods: The research used an analytical observational method with a cross-sectional design. Subjects were selected using purposive sampling techniques based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in a sample size of 60 participants. The independent variable was the number of remaining teeth, while the dependent variable was muscle mass. The number of remaining teeth was assessed using a disposable dental kit. Muscle mass was measured with a TanitaⓇ BC-541 digital body composition scale, and height was measured using a microtoise. All participants provided informed consent, and data were recorded on a measurement result sheet. The data were then tabulated and analyzed descriptively and using the Spearman correlation test, with a significance threshold set at 0.000 (p-value <0.05). Results: The correlation coefficient was found to be 0.672, indicating a significantly positive correlation between the number of remaining teeth and muscle mass in women aged 45-69 years. Conclusion: A lower number of remaining teeth is associated with lower muscle mass in women aged 45-69 years.KEYWORDSElderly, tooth loss, muscle mass

Abstract

Introduction: The prevalence of periodontitis has reached 42.8% in Indonesia. One contributing factor is Porphyromonas gingivalis. The ovarian dysfunction caused by ovariectomy procedures may also cause periodontitis. Post ovariectomy conditions resemble menopause, lowering the production of estrogen and progesterone hormones, leaving patients vulnerable to periodontitis. To prevent the side effects of the treatment, herbal ingredients are commonly used. The extract of cassava leaves is known to have pharmacological effects as an antioxidant and, thus, can be applied as a medicine for periodontitis.      Methods: A total of 21 rats were divided into three groups, (1) control: healthy rats; (2) Group P.1: P. gingivalis-induced rats; (3) Group P.2: ovariectomized rats. Groups P.1 and P.2 were further divided into three subgroups that were administered cassava leaves extract at a dosage of 179.2 mg/ kg BW, aquades and vitamin C. Rats were euthanized at day eight after the initial treatment to collect left mandibular first molar. The mandibular sections were immunohistochemically stained to quantify SOD expression using light microscope while the Image J software was used. Fibroblast cells expressing SOD are characterized by brown coloration in the cytoplasm and darker nucleus. Results: In periodontitis conditions, either due to P.gingivalis induction or ovarian dysfunction, fibroblast cells in rats given cassava leaves extract expressed higher SOD than rats given aquades, but still lower than rats given vitamin C. The result of the one way ANOVA test showed p value of 0,00, which means that there is a significant difference in all groups. Conclusion: Cassava leaves extract demonstrated the potential to increase the antioxidant expression in P. gingivalis-induced and ovarian dysfunction rats.
