Abstract

Media serves as a powerful tool in shaping public opinion and perspectives, particularly through Islamic organization-based media portals that play a crucial role in influencing perceptions of the LGBT community. This study examines the construction of LGBT narratives in the media portals NU Online, Ummah Today, and CAIR, utilizing the social semiotic method developed by M.A.K. Halliday and drawing on the theories of Nick Couldry and Andreas Hepp to explain the role of media construction. A total of 48 units of analysis were conducted, comprising 29 publications from NU Online in 2016, 9 publications from Ummah Today in 2022, and 10 publications from CAIR in 2016. The findings indicate that Ummah Today and NU Online tend to reinforce traditional values by rejecting issues such as LGBT, whereas CAIR adopts a more inclusive approach, especially in times of crisis, aiming to dispel Islamophobia and promote human rights for minority groups. This research reveals how media practices shape identities and social meanings across various cultural contexts and highlights significant social, cultural, and political implications of language in maintaining or challenging existing power structures and social norms.

Abstract

The internet as a new media has changed the practice of Public Relations by utilizing new media communication technology which has become known as Cyber Public Relations. Cyber Public Relations practices at a public university in Malang utilize new media Instagram, and website as official communication channels. This research aims to identify the effectiveness of using new media as a two-way communication medium with the framework of Dialogic Communication theory. This research is a type of quantitative descriptive research with quantitative content analysis data collection techniques on Instagram features and uploads and the university’s website from 1 June - 31 August 2023. The results of the research indicate that the application of Dialogic Communication principles in managing content and features on the website is effective, with effectiveness of 66.8%. Meanwhile, the application of Dialogic Communication principles in content management on Instagram is less effective, with an effectiveness of 48%. This research aims to discuss framing analyses of sexual violence in NU and Suara Muhammadiyah online media. This research uses a qualitative research method with Robert Etnman's framing analysis approach. Robert Etnman's framing analysis method is used to see how a media constructs reality and to see that news is understood and framed before being presented to the public with four elements, namely: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and make treatment recommendations. Based on the results of the analysis using four elements of framing by Robert Etnman, the framing carried out by online media NU and Suara Muhammadiyah regarding reporting on sexual violence explains the causes, effects, triggers, and handling of sexual violence. The online media NU and Suara Muhammadiyah framed the news by looking for informants who could provide a number of facts and testimonies regarding sexual violence. NU online news framing emphasizes that sexual violence is an evil intention that is contrary to religion, morals, and education, which must be opposed and prevented. Suara Muhammadiyah's news framing emphasizes Islamic teachings that sexual violence has harmed Islamic educational institutions, which prioritize compassion.
