Abstract

The Indonesian Philatelic Association (PFI) collaborated with PT. Pos Indonesia launched a special edition of PRISMA stamps to welcome Baliphex 2022, uniquely on PRISMA stamps there are symbols of ‘Wayang Kamasan’ painting (Balinese) and Mahabharata story (Indian) initiated by PFI. Researchers view that the special edition PRISMA series road to Baliphex 2022 is not just proof of payment and an event promotion tool, but as has meaning in each of the symbols that reflected Balinese and Indian culture. This study aims to reveal the representation of Balinese and Indian cultures in the PRISMA series Road to Baliphex 2022. We use Roland Barthes' semiotic method with units of analysis of denotation, connotation, and mythology. The results show that Balinese culture in PRISMA's Road to Baliphex 2022 series is structured through Mahabharata in Wayang Kamasan symbols, Baliphex events, and stamp elements that have denotative and connotative meanings. The mythology that appears in the PRISMA series Road to Baliphex 2022 is the myth of Hinduism, which is the belief of the majority of Balinese people. Hinduism mythology is structured through the symbolization Saput Poleng, Flags of Kober, Merdah and Tualen, Horse Carts, Big Trees, Ornaments, and Temples. The Hinduism mythology in the PRISMA series Road to Baliphex 2022 is not assembled through a single cultural representation, but with cultural hybrids from Mahabharata (Indian) and Wayang Kamasan (Balinese). This research contributes to the thesis statement that postage stamps can be used by the community as communication media to represent a certain ideology through a series of symbols with cultural hybridity.

Abstract

This study examines how slut-shaming operates within Indonesian cancel culture, focusing on the 2022 scandal involving actress Arawinda. Infidelity scandals were selected because they consistently attract massive online engagement in Indonesia and function as forms of collective entertainment that invite moral judgment. Cancel culture is often portrayed as a practice of accountability, but it reproduces gendered power relations by disproportionately targeting women. This study analysed how X discourse positioned women as the primary bearers of blame while minimising or erasing men’s responsibility. More than 2.000 tweets were collected using Selenium-based scraping, from which 633 tweets containing slut-shaming discourse were purposively sampled and analysed through a qualitative critical paradigm. Feminist Poststructuralist Discourse Analysis (FPDA) was applied to examine how sexualized language and moral judgments construct gendered subjectivities. The findings show that digital spaces do not serve as neutral arenas of accountability, but instead reinforce patriarchal norms and gender inequalities.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the media imaging in framing the Three Srikandi Candidates for East Java Governor in 2024 with three stages of analysis, namely transitivity, assessment, and visual. At the same time, based on the analyses that have been conducted, this article also aims to assess the future of women's political roles in Indonesia. This article uses a multimodal discourse analysis method with a qualitative approach. The results showed that the media recognized the leadership capacity of the three women candidates for the 2024 East Java Governor. First, transitivity analysis in the news about the 2024 East Java governor election shows three female candidates as key actors in political contestation. Second, appraisal analysis shows that positive attitudes dominate, highlighting the competence and courage of the candidates. However, some perspectives also reveal the challenges faced by women, such as cultural stigma and double burden. Third, Visual analysis in the news reinforces the image of candidates through images that highlight personal and professional characteristics, thus creating closeness with the audience. For this reason, the media needs to take proactive steps in building a fairer narrative by minimizing stereotypes and focusing on women's professional achievements. By doing so, the media can contribute to a more equal and inclusive political future for women in Indonesia.gb777

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the critical representation of figures, symbols, and power in political communication through a critical phenomenological approach combined with bibliometric analysis. It mapped research trends, key authors, dominant keywords, and citation networks that emerged in phenomenological studies of political communication during 2010–2025. Data were collected using Publish or Perish software and analyzed with Excel and VOSviewer to illustrate relationships among keywords, authors, and citations. The findings showed a significant increase in publications since 2021, with dominant themes including gender representation, populist figures, and the symbolism of power in digital media. The results also indicated that scholarly discourse in this field had become increasingly fragmented while simultaneously consolidating around certain clusters, particularly those related to communicative action, political narratives, and identity politics. The study concluded that combining bibliometric methods with critical phenomenology revealed the discursive landscape and representational biases in contemporary political communication. It further provided conceptual and methodological contributions to the development of political communication studies grounded in the critique of representation and symbolic experience.

The program aims to enhance the portal’s journalistic capacity through the implementation of collaborative journalism, addressing key challenges such as limited human resources and the absence of professional news-production skills. Using a participatory approach, the initiative involved newsroom mentoring and the integration of student interns to support reporting processes. The program resulted in measurable improvements in productivity and content diversity, with 115 news articles published over three months across education, socio-economic issues, health, and STEM topics. These outcomes indicate a more structured and consistent news workflow. The findings highlight the potential of collaborative journalism to strengthen Muhammadiyah’s local media by improving content quality, expanding audience engagement, and positioning Tunasmalang.id as an inclusive public information platform.

Abstract

This research examines the visual image-based political communication strategy on the TikTok platform by highlighting the “gemoy” symbol as part of a political campaign aimed at the younger generation. This phenomenon shows a shift in the way political messages are delivered from a rational-informative approach to an affective-visual approach that utilizes popular culture. The main problem in this research lies in how political meaning is formed through the symbolization of the “gemoy” image and to what extent it affects young people's political involvement. The purpose of this research is to identify the various meanings of young audiences towards image-based political communication and explain the dynamics of symbol meaning in the context of digital culture. The method used is a qualitative approach with a case study, relying on data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews, observation of TikTok content, and visual documentation. Data were obtained from interactions with TikTok users aged 17-25 as well as analysis of political content using the “gemoy" representation. The results show that political images are not only passively consumed but also actively interpreted and reproduced by young audiences based on their affections, identities, and digital lifestyles. In conclusion, political communication in the era of social media is heavily influenced by the power of visual symbols and emotional interactivity, not just by substantial arguments. This research contributes theoretically to the expansion of the concept of digital political communication and practically encourages the strengthening of political literacy based on popular culture and algorithmic media.

Abstract

This study examines how cultural identity is communicated without words through the visual and spatial arrangements of Dusun Sade, a living Sasak heritage village in Lombok, Indonesia. Drawing on Foucault's conceptualization of spatial power and Rose's framework of the visual apparatus, the study argues that cultural identity communication in tourism operates through the systematic organization of space, movement, and visibility rather than through explicit narration or display. Systematic photo-documentation yielded a corpus of 127 images collected during fieldwork in December 2025, analyzed for recurring spatial and visual patterns at both empirical and discursive levels. Three patterns were identified: concentrated visitor movement along a primary corridor, consistent architectural emphasis on natural materials within that corridor, and the exclusive positioning of cultural and commercial activities along the established visitor route. Together, these arrangements produce a selective but coherent visual representation of the Sasak tradition that visitors encounter as natural and authentic. This study extends existing applications of Foucauldian and Rose's frameworks to the context of inhabited traditional villages, demonstrating that spatial governance operates as a mechanism of cultural identity production in living heritage tourism settings.
