Mass media has the power to build a discourse on public discussion. This strength should be used in carrying out its function as a watchdog in democratic practice. The mass media must break away in a position as part of the executive or legislative because he himself is the fourth force in the pillar of democracy. In the 2019 Indonesian Presidential Election (Pilpres) the mass media showed practices that weakened this position with the presence of affiliated media owners or even became part of the political parties supporting one of the candidate pairs in the 2019 Presidential Election. This paper is critical thinking about how politics mainstream mass media in Indonesia in polarizing support to candidate pairs. The data are collected through observation of media content and in-depth interviews with informants from media workers and informants who have competence in the field of mass media. The results of the study show that mainstream mass media tends to still be positioned as the main source of information in the five-year democracy event. The preaching of mainstream mass media still shows partiality to certain candidate pairs by not expressing criticism and vice versa often showing criticism on other candidate pairs. The mass media that have affiliations to political parties tend to show partiality to the authorities and ignore the critical role in overseeing government practices. The oligarchy of the media industry in Indonesia has not shown the role of overseeing the social and political environment.

This study aims to reveal vice.com's discourse strategy in reporting the suicide bombings at three churches in Surabaya on 13 May 2018. This action caused many victims, namely 28 people died and 57 people were injured. The presence of mass media facilitates the search and acquisition of information by the public, especially with the emergence of online media. People tend to actively find out about what is going on and the existence of online media makes news very easily accessible to the public. Fairclough's critical discourse analysis model is applied to analyze news on vice.com media. Vice.com is an online media based in America-Canada. Vice.com first expanded to Southeast Asia and stopped in Indonesia. This study seeks to examine three levels of analysis in critical discourse analysis, namely: text, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice. Vice.com also has an independent position in exposing news without intervention from other parties. This is indicated by the vice.com editor who chooses a diction that tends to have neither negative nor positive connotations. In addition, 26 direct quotes were found in 4 news articles. At the text level, events are delivered coherently and clearly. Media vice.com does not seem to have an agenda to provoke the public regarding this issue because the news tends to only provide information regarding the number of victims. The situation conveyed is related to events, individuals, groups, situations, and others in the text. The role of language in the text used by vice.com editors is to educate audiences to understand the realities that actually happen easily. At the discourse practice level, the news production system has freedom in the news production process and there is no intervention from the capital owner to directly affect the reporting of the case. At the level of sociocultural practice, media vice.com puts forward a controlled, safe and peaceful situation in the socio-political area of Surabaya.

This paper aims to reveal how the political background colors the political communication process in winning Abu (Muhammadiyah) and Lilik (Muslimat Nahdatul Ulama) in the 2018 regional election in Kediri City. This research uses qualitative research methods with instrumental case study approach, and we use data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews and documentation. The results show that the different political backgrounds of the candidates actually create cross-cutting affiliations between Muhammadiyah and NU Muslim society in Kediri City to provide support for Abu and Lilik in the Kediri City regional election. This cross-cutting affiliation is not created naturally, but is determined by ‘Wong Tebangan’ as King Maker. Political lobbying by a ‘Gus’ attracted support from several NU kyai in Kediri City. Then, holding regular NU Muslimat recitations and stall forums became a means of maintaining the integrity of support for attacks from other candidates. Finally, the research also revealed how Javanese beliefs, modern political instruments, and religion are used in winning elections.

Bobby Nasution, who is the son-in-law of President Joko Widodo, running for mayor of Medan, North Sumatra, is an interesting topic to discuss. Bobby Nasution was accompanied by Aulia Rachman as Deputy Mayor of Medan, North Sumatra. With the pairing of Bobby Nasution and Aulia Rachman running to become the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Medan, it attracts public attention, because people often look at the background of a candidate to determine whether the candidate is good or bad. This is known as the halo effect strategy. This study aims to explain the halo effect as a political communication strategy for the pair Bobby Nasution and Aulia Rachman in the 2020 Medan City Election. This study uses a qualitative method with a constructivism paradigm and utilizes data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews. The results of this study indicate that the use of the halo effect as a political communication strategy forms a positive political image, this is also in line with the vision and mission of Bobby Nasution and Aulia Rachman, namely the Medan Berkah Collaboration, to form a positive image by bringing what is needed by the people of Medan City.

The Indonesian Philatelic Association (PFI) collaborated with PT. Pos Indonesia launched a special edition of PRISMA stamps to welcome Baliphex 2022, uniquely on PRISMA stamps there are symbols of ‘Wayang Kamasan’ painting (Balinese) and Mahabharata story (Indian) initiated by PFI. Researchers view that the special edition PRISMA series road to Baliphex 2022 is not just proof of payment and an event promotion tool, but as has meaning in each of the symbols that reflected Balinese and Indian culture. This study aims to reveal the representation of Balinese and Indian cultures in the PRISMA series Road to Baliphex 2022. We use Roland Barthes' semiotic method with units of analysis of denotation, connotation, and mythology. The results show that Balinese culture in PRISMA's Road to Baliphex 2022 series is structured through Mahabharata in Wayang Kamasan symbols, Baliphex events, and stamp elements that have denotative and connotative meanings. The mythology that appears in the PRISMA series Road to Baliphex 2022 is the myth of Hinduism, which is the belief of the majority of Balinese people. Hinduism mythology is structured through the symbolization Saput Poleng, Flags of Kober, Merdah and Tualen, Horse Carts, Big Trees, Ornaments, and Temples. The Hinduism mythology in the PRISMA series Road to Baliphex 2022 is not assembled through a single cultural representation, but with cultural hybrids from Mahabharata (Indian) and Wayang Kamasan (Balinese). This research contributes to the thesis statement that postage stamps can be used by the community as communication media to represent a certain ideology through a series of symbols with cultural hybridity.
