Abstract

Abstract

This study developed a guided inquiry-based learning module using Canva media to enhance critical thinking and learning motivation in Grade VIII students on the topic of the digestive system. Given the low science literacy and critical thinking skills in Indonesia, especially in junior high school science, this module aimed to address the gap in teaching abstract topics. A Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model was applied in small-scale (10 students) and large-scale trials (55 students) at two junior high schools. Data were collected through expert validation, a critical thinking test, and a motivation questionnaire, analyzed using N-Gain and descriptive statistics. Results showed a moderate improvement in critical thinking (N-Gain of 0.63) and high student motivation (88% in the small-scale and 82% in the large-scale trial). The use of Canva within the inquiry-based approach significantly increased engagement and helped students understand abstract concepts, proving that combining inquiry-based learning with visual media is an effective strategy to improve critical thinking and motivation in junior high school science.

Abstract

Physics learning requires active student engagement and strong conceptual understanding, particularly for topics related to real-life phenomena such as renewable energy. However, classroom instruction remains largely conventional and has yet to fully utilize interactive technologies. To address this issue, a Nearpod-based learning medium integrated with the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model was developed as a solution to enhance student engagement, activeness, and conceptual comprehension. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ASSURE instructional design model, which includes six stages: analyzing learner characteristics, stating learning objectives, selecting methods and media, utilizing media and materials, requiring learner participation, and conducting evaluation and revision. The participants were tenth-grade students from SMA Negeri 1 Kabila. Research instruments included expert validation sheets for content and media, student activity observation sheets, student response questionnaires, and learning outcome tests (pre-test and post-test). The results showed that the Nearpod media was categorized as highly feasible, with validation scores from content and media experts exceeding the established eligibility standards. Regarding practicality, all indicators of instructional implementation during both sessions reached 100%, indicating that every step of the PBL learning syntax was executed effectively. Student activity observations revealed high engagement levels, ranging from 64% to 100%, while student responses were highly positive in terms of visual design, ease of use, and interactivity. In terms of effectiveness, all students achieved post-test scores above the school’s Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKTP), showing a significant improvement compared to the pre-test results. These findings demonstrate that the Nearpod media successfully increases student engagement, facilitates interactive learning, and supports better understanding of renewable energy concepts through a problem-based approach.

Abstract

The demands of 21st-century learning require the integration of digital and interactive media, as conventional science instruction often fails to optimally engage students and improve learning outcomes. The study aims to investigate the impact of using Canva-based video learning media on students' learning outcomes in the topic "Work and Simple Machines" within the science subject. The use of Canva as a learning tool constitutes a 21st-century educational medium that can provide a more efficient learning experience. It is a learning resource that can be edited and customized according to specific needs. This research is based on the fact that the learning process in schools is still dominated by conventional methods such as lectures and discussions, which results in low student activity and learning motivation. The research design is a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sampling technique used in this study is Cluster Random Sampling. The population of this study consists of students from SMP Negeri 1 Marisa, with the sample tested being class VIII A (n = 30), designated as the experimental class. Meanwhile, the research data were collected using test instruments to determine the level of students' learning achievement. The tests used in this study include prerequisite tests (normality test), hypothesis testing, and n-gain analysis. The results of the hypothesis test indicate that the t-value in all sample classes is greater than the t-table value; thus, H₁ is accepted. Based on the n-gain analysis, a value of 0.68 was obtained in the experimental class, which falls into the high category. The statistical test used in the normality test is the Lilliefors test with a significance level set at 5% (α = 0.05). Therefore, the use of Canva-based video learning media has a significant effect on students' learning outcomes in the material on work and simple machines.
