Abstract

Lamb is important in providing balanced and healthy nutrition as a source of protein, fat, and essential micronutrients such as iron, zinc, and vitamin B complex. The mineral and vitamin content of meat from local breeds needs to be evaluated as a portrait of the genetic quality data of sheep and as a reference for developing sheep that produce healthy and high-quality meat. This study aimed to analyze the mineral and vitamin B contents of Sapudi sheep and Merino cross sheep meat from the longissimus dorsi area to invent genetic quality data for the meat of these two sheep. Three Sapudi and three Merino cross sheep were kept under similar conditions for two months. Meat collection from the longissimus dorsi muscle was carried out to analyze vitamin B and mineral content. A t-test was then performed to determine meat quality. The results showed that the mineral content of Mn and Cu in Sapudi sheep meat was lower than that in Merino cross meat. The vitamin B2 content in Sapudi sheep (0.11 mg/100 g) is lower than that of Merino cross (0.20 mg/100 g). In comparison, the vitamin B3 content of Sapudi sheep meat was higher (0.51 mg/100 g) than Cross-merino (0.40 mg/100 g). This research concludes that breeding influences nutrient content, and Merino crossbreed sheep are superior to Sapudi sheep in terms of vitamin B and mineral content. Abstract

The cut-and-carry feed collection system becomes particularly difficult during the dry season. Most of the agricultural land in Bondowoso District is used for coffee plantations. However, the utilization of coffee husk waste produced by the local coffee industry remains suboptimal. Coffee husks contain nutrients that have the potential to be used as animal feed. Nevertheless, the presence of antinutritional factors and low digestibility limit their effectiveness as feed. This community service initiative aims to enhance farmers' skills in providing nutritionally rich beef cattle feed by utilizing coffee husk waste through solid-state fermentation technology. The program began with a socialization session on complete feed for beef cattle, followed by training on how to process feed from coffee husks, and concluded with monitoring the implementation of feed usage for livestock. The results of the service activities show that the farming community was highly enthusiastic about participating in all aspects of the program, including socialization, training, and monitoring. Beef cattle that were fed complete feed made from coffee husk waste processed using solid-state fermentation (SSF) technology for four months showed a higher body weight gain of 144 kg, compared to those fed unprocessed coffee husk waste, which gained only 120 kg. Keywords: Bondowoso; cattle; feed; fermentation; coffee husk.

Abstract

Population of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in the rumen of fattening livestock is relatively high and has the potential to be utilized. This study aimed to screen and identify LAB from the rumen as probiotic candidates. The research used rumen liquid from cattle, goats, and sheep collected from slaughterhouses in Bondowoso. The screening and identification processes were conducted at the Livestock Agroindustry Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jember. The screening included colony morphology, Gram staining, cell shape, catalase test, and Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas production ability. The final identification of potential probiotic bacterial candidates was based on their bile salt tolerance. The results showed that there were LAB candidates with 22 isolates (from sheep/OS), 19 isolates (from cattle/OC), and 18 isolates (from goats/OG). The bacterial colony shape included oval (2OS, 1OC), circular (11OS, 18OC, 12OG), irregular (7OS, 6OG), and spindle (2OS). Colony sizes ranged from small (0.5–1.2 mm: 7 OS, 9OC, 4OG), medium (1.2–3.0 mm: 7OS, 7OC, 7OG), to large (3.0–5.0 mm: 8OS, 3OC, 7OG), with the majority of colonies being white and cream-colored, and a minority being yellow. All bacteria were Gram-positive, with coccus (19OS, 14OC, 2OG) and bacillus (3OS, 5OC, 16OG) shaped cells. All samples were capable of producing CO2 gas, and 50% of the isolates possessed catalase enzymes. Based on bile salt tolerance tests, 15% of the isolates had a survival rate of over 50%. In conclusion, LAB from the rumen, particularly goats, were identified as potential probiotic candidates for further development.

Abstract

Sumberjambe District is one of the livestock centers in Jember Regency. The Raung Mandiri Livestock Group in Jambearum Village, Sumberjambe District, which was inaugurated at the end of 2023, already has 300 sheep. The problem faced is that members of the livestock group do not know alternative types of forage, how to propagate it and how to make silage. So far, food has been provided by searching for grass in the forest or in the fields every day, so it is hampered during the rainy season. The aim of this activity is to introduce alternative types of forage, cultivation methods and silage making in the context of initiating the Feed Bank. The methods used in carrying out activities include socialization and training, which involve participants taking an active role in activities that directly go into practice. The results of the activity showed that participants gain knowledge regarding alternative types of forage other than babandotan, elephant grass. Participants are able to reproduce, sow and plant forage seeds. Support for inputs for the initiation of the Feed Bank has been handed over in the form of chooper machines and forage seeds.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of subclinical mastitis (SCM) and the correlation between CMT positive score, udder morphology and management practice in dairy goats in several regencies in East Java. The SCM identification was tested using the California Mastitis Test (CMT) method. The obtained data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, and the correlation was determined using Kendall’s tau_b coefficient correlation method. The results showed the prevalence of SCM in Blitar, Lumajang, and Jember amounted to 19,35%, 0,86%, and 25%, respectively. The control management of observed dairy farms was relatively similar such as the milking frequency, feeding management, health control, and cage type. Milk production was moderately correlated with CMT (tb =-0.417) and low correlation with the udder shape (tb =1.51), side udder cross-section (tb =-0,293), teat angle of separation between teat (tb =0,204), and degree of udder separation (tb =0,128). The CMT also has low correlation with the BCS (tb =0,146), udder symmetry (tb =0,126), sided udder cross-section (tb =0,153). Then CMT also has a moderate correlation with housing type (tb =-0,380) and milking frequency (tb =0.365). In conclusion, the prevalence of SCM was relatively low to moderate and its correlation with udder morphology were low to moderate.
