Abstract

Language interference in regional literary works is an inevitable phenomenon amidst the multilingual dynamics of its speaking communities. Balinese short stories published in the mass media provide the most concrete opportunity to observe how elements of other languages ??enter and shape the language patterns of contemporary Balinese writers. This phenomenon has direct implications for the preservation of Balinese as a regional language in the global era. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing primary data in the form of Balinese short stories published in newspapers. Data were collected through a listening method with note-taking techniques, analyzed using the matching and distribution method, and presented using formal and informal methods. The theoretical basis used is Applied Sociolinguistics Theory regarding language interference. The interference found originates from two language groups: internal interference from Indonesian and external interference from English. From a linguistic perspective, interference occurs at the vocabulary and phrase level. Factors triggering interference include the speaker's bilingualism, the lack of appropriate lexical equivalents in Balinese, the speaker's positive attitude towards other languages, and the influence of developments in the era and media. Interference in Balinese short stories is a logical consequence of intense language contact in the speaker's environment. This phenomenon cannot be completely eliminated, but it can be minimized by strengthening positive attitudes toward Balinese and standardizing accepted loanwords. Interference also poses a challenge to efforts to preserve Balinese amid the pressures of globalization.

Abstract

Teaching Bahasa Indonesia to non-native speakers has gained increasing significance in the context of global mobility, academic exchange, and cross-cultural communication. As Indonesia’s geopolitical and economic influence grows, so too does the demand for high-quality language instruction that not only develops linguistic competence but also fosters intercultural understanding. This article examines the strategies, challenges, and innovations involved in teaching Bahasa Indonesia as a foreign language, with an emphasis on pedagogical approaches that are adaptable to diverse learner profiles. Drawing on a review of current literature and practical case studies, the study identifies communicative, task-based, and culture-integrated methodologies as effective strategies to enhance learner engagement and retention. Key challenges include limited teaching resources tailored for non-native learners, variations in learners’ first-language backgrounds, and the need to balance linguistic accuracy with communicative fluency. Furthermore, the research explores recent innovations such as digital language learning platforms, gamification, and immersive cultural experiences that have transformed instructional practices. By integrating technology with traditional pedagogy, educators can create dynamic and learner-centered environments that promote both linguistic proficiency and cultural competence. The article concludes that effective Bahasa Indonesia instruction for non-native speakers requires a holistic approach that aligns curriculum design, teaching methods, and assessment practices with learner needs, while leveraging technological advancements and cultural immersion opportunities. This study provides valuable insights for language educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers, contributing to the advancement of Indonesian language education in both domestic and international contexts.

Abstract

This review paper examines the adoption and implementation of the Bologna Process across higher education institutions in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). Employing a secondary data review approach, the study synthesizes findings from institutional reports, policy documents, and empirical research conducted at universities in Sulaimani, Erbil, Duhok, Zakho, Halabja, Soran, Garmian, and Raparin. The analysis reveals several opportunities arising from the Bologna Process, including curriculum reform towards student-centered learning, the adoption of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), improved quality assurance mechanisms, and enhanced potential for international academic collaboration. Despite these advancements, the study identifies significant challenges such as inconsistent policy coordination, inadequate digital infrastructure, faculty resistance to pedagogical change, and limited institutional capacity in quality assurance. These issues hinder the full integration of Bologna principles across the region. Based on the findings, the paper proposes key recommendations: standardizing policy frameworks, investing in digital and administrative infrastructure, expanding faculty training programs, and strengthening institutional governance. These strategies aim to promote a more coherent and sustainable implementation of the Bologna Process, contributing to the ongoing modernization of higher education in the Kurdistan Region.
