Abstract

Teaching spoken English has been a critical issue in the EFL context. The researchers are focusing on how to improve students' public speaking abilities. Several studies, however, have focused on how teachers build EFL learners' self-confidence before focusing on their speaking skills. Lack of self-confidence makes it difficult for beginners to speak, and it also makes it difficult for teachers to design activities that foster students' self-confidence. In response to this growing demand, this article provides an empirical account of how scripted role-plays are used as an innovative learning design in a private high school setting with a majority of students who are beginners. This research applied the Classroom Action Research study. The scripted role-play intervention was carried out for eight meetings following an action research protocol. Classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with students and the teacher were used to collect data. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to analyze these data. According to the study's findings, the students had finally gained confidence in public speaking. Being confident allowed students to practice more, which improved their speaking skills. The study's findings have three practical implications. First, increasing opportunities for students to practice speaking should be prioritized in EFL classes. Second, providing scripted role-play for beginner students allows them to easily use the language. Finally, before asking students to improve their speaking skills, teachers should focus on developing their students' self-confidence.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the improvement of the 1st-grade students’ narrative writing by using digital storytelling and how they perceive that. The researchers used a quasi-experimental design to conduct this research. The population was 93 students and the sample elected was 15 students for both experiment and control classes. Test and questionnaire were employed to address the research questions. The data analysis was conducted using SPSS 25. The findings revealed that students’ narrative writing improved after digital storytelling was integrated into the lessons. The independent sample test showed that sig. 2 tailed < 0.05. Consequently, the alternative hypothesis was accepted, indicating a significant difference in narrative writing between students taught with digital storytelling and those taught without using digital storytelling. Moreover, the n-gain score result showed that the mean score of the experiment class was 62.09 included in the effective enough category. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of digital storytelling is effective enough in enhancing the narrative writing of the 1st-grade students of MAN 2 Polman. Furthermore, the data from the questionnaire showed that the students had positive perceptions of using digital storytelling in classroom activities.

Abstract

This paper examines how Project-Based Learning (PjBL) affects students' engagement in English when taught in a virtual learning environment. The case study was classroom-based and used data collected through interviews with twenty-five participants engaged in a virtual PjBL enactment. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis, while member checking was also used to ensure the data’s trustworthiness. The study found that the PjBL enactment had improved students’ learning engagement in three ways. First, the cognitive impact was seen in the participants’ experiences of a culture of self-directed learning where they were involved in the inquiry process through scaffolding activities. Second, their behavioral engagement was seen in their active involvement in project presentations and their shift in attitude towards the use of technology in virtual PjBL. Finally, their emotional engagement was reflected in the increased personal self-esteem and the change in the lecturer-student interaction. This research suggests that PjBL should be used more extensively in virtual classrooms because it positively impacts the students’ learning engagement and boosts their motivation to learn English.

Abstract

The paper intends to enquire about the effectiveness of paraphrasing in evolving the EFL students' writing ability for Indonesian Higher Education. The study was quasi-experimental research, and it was conducted in the 4th semester of the English students at  Universitas Sulawesi Barat. The research instrument was a writing test, and the student’s scores were gathered through paraphrasing rubric scores. Statistical inferential analysis was performed on the data.  It is possible to conclude that The Ha (Alternative) Hypothesis was established hence the paired samples test result carried out with SPSS performed that the sig. rating on the value obtained from the T-test was lower than Sig. value, so theory Y assumptions (Ha) were approved, and both the pilot testing and post-intervention results of the study demonstrated Sig. (2-tailed = 0.000) has been less than 0.05. In other words, this indicates that there is a consequence. The research finishes with pedagogical recommendations for trying to better the paraphrasing skills of novice student writers, and paraphrasing has a medium effect on the EFL students’ writing ability in Indonesian higher education.

Abstract

Abstract
