Abstract

The behavior of the giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) towards folding traps is significant to identify, given its complex movement patterns and dependence on the fishing gear. This study aimed to investigate the behavioral responses of M. rosenbergii to folding traps by examining spatial movement patterns and assessing trap effectiveness across three time periods (morning, noon, and night). To achieve this, an experiment using a behavioral event analysis approach was employed to reconstruct movement trajectories, X–Y coordinates, and behavioral phases. Furthermore, the Mann–Whitney U test was utilized to compare the distributions of entry and exit frequencies as an indicator of trap retention efficiency. The results showed that prawns exhibited adaptive, stepwise spatial behavior, beginning with external exploration characterized by zigzag paths, circular movements, and approach–retract cycles, before entering the trap with an average latency of 8–10 minutes. Furthermore, 95 of 160 individuals (59.38%) successfully entered the trap, whereas 65 (40.62%) exited after initial contact. The Mann–Whitney test confirmed a significant difference between entry and escape numbers (U=63;p<0.05), with the number of successful entries being significantly higher than the number of escapes, thereby validating the structural effectiveness of the folding trap. The temporal distribution indicated that nighttime was the most effective period, with 60 individuals entering, substantially more than in the morning (28) or at noon (7). These findings highlight that the effectiveness of folding traps is closely linked to the nocturnal behavioral patterns of M. rosenbergii. Abstract

The terubuk fish (Tenualosa macrura) is an endemic species that holds high economic value and significant socio-cultural importance for the people of Riau, Indonesia. However, excessive fishing pressure and estuarine habitat degradation have drastically reduced its population. This study aims to map and synthesize existing scientific knowledge related to the conservation and management of the terubuk fish through a scoping review approach. A total of 38 documents were examined, of which 34 met the inclusion criteria based on the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The analyzed literature was categorized into six major thematic areas: bioecology, socio-economics, institutional aspects, legal frameworks, cultural values, and environmental factors. The synthesis reveals heavy pressure on fish stocks, high economic vulnerability among small-scale fishers, weak law enforcement, and a declining role of local wisdom in conservation practices. These findings emphasize the urgency of developing an integrated management strategy that combines ecological science, socio-economic conditions, and the cultural values of coastal communities. Such an approach could serve as the foundation for designing more adaptive and effective policies to ensure the long-term sustainability of the terubuk fish population in Riau waters.

Abstract

Abstract. Prianto E, Jhonnerie R, Oktorini Y, Adriman, Fajri NE. 2024. Assessing fishery management models in the Kampar River, Riau Province, Indonesia, using Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) tool. Biodiversitas 25: 4581-4592. The Kampar River's high fish diversity dramatically benefits the local community. However, overfishing threatens the river's fishery resources. Urgent and concerted management efforts, including local wisdom implementation, are crucial to address this pressing issue. Law Number 45 of 2009 concerning fisheries mandates sustainable fishery resource management, primarily through an ecosystem-based approach. From January to June 2024, researchers conducted a study in the Kampar River area to assess the status of ecosystem-based fishery resource management across several management models. The research combined qualitative and quantitative methods, using purposive sampling to select 5-10 participants from each village. Following guidelines from the Directorate of Fish Resources, the study developed indicators for each domain and converted them into composite indicators using the 'flag modeling' technique. Data analysis showed that the Lubuk Larangan management model achieved the highest ecosystem-based fishery resource status, scoring 13,374 points (green), indicating optimal implementation of sustainable fisheries management principles. This success necessitates the development of strategic plans to maintain or enhance existing domain conditions and indicators. The individual auction system, communal auction system, and government regulations scored 13,168, 13,120, and 10,899 points respectively (yellow), signifying partial implementation of sustainable fisheries principles.

Abstract

Abstract

Soil is an important component of forest ecosystems because it acts as a provider of nutrients, a support for vegetation, and a regulator of biogeochemical cycles. Variations in the physical and chemical properties of soil are greatly influenced by vegetation cover and soil depth. This study aims to analyse the chemical properties of soil in two types of vegetation cover, namely dense and moderate cover, in the Riau University Arboretum, which was determined using the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) method. Soil samples were taken at three depths (0–10 cm, 10–20 cm, and 20–30 cm) to determine the vertical variation in soil chemical properties. The parameters analysed included pH, organic carbon (organic C), total nitrogen (total N), phosphorus (P₂O₅), and potassium (K₂O). The results showed that soil pH was in the acidic category, ranging from 4.43 to 5.21. Organic carbon content was higher in the surface layer than in the lower layers, with the highest value of 5.14% in medium cover. Total N content was low in all samples (0.11–0.25%), indicating a limitation of nitrogen as a factor restricting vegetation growth. The nutrient elements P₂O₅ and K₂O tended to be higher in the surface layer, especially in dense cover (P₂O₅ = 26.66 mg/100 g; K₂O = 24.56 mg/100 g). In general, dense cover was able to maintain nutrient availability better than medium cover, although medium cover had relatively higher organic C content on the surface. These findings confirm that vegetation cover plays an important role in maintaining soil quality, and the preservation of dense vegetation needs to be optimised to support soil fertility and the sustainable conservation function of the arboretum.
