Abstract

Education is a continuous process that should align with students’ socio-cultural contexts. Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) offers an approach that integrates these contexts into the learning process to enhance critical thinking and social sensitivity. This study aims to examine the impact of CRT on the critical thinking skills and social sensitivity of seventh-grade students at SMPN 11 Madiun. This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles, employing Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) models. These methods were designed to incorporate students’ cultural backgrounds into Social Science instruction. Students created self-profile videos and explored local folklore as part of the learning activities. In the first cycle, 82% of students demonstrated adequate critical thinking, which increased to 94% in the second cycle. Social sensitivity also improved significantly: initial observations showed that only 43.76% of students met the standard for social sensitivity, while by the end of the second cycle, 100% exhibited empathy and respect for others. The average score of student learning outcomes rose to 90.56, with learning completeness reaching 93.75%. The findings suggest that CRT, when contextualized through culturally relevant materials and learning strategies, can effectively improve students' critical thinking, social awareness, and academic achievement. By creating reflective and culturally meaningful learning experiences, CRT fosters deeper engagement and empathy in the classroom.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The rapid expansion of digital technology has fundamentally reshaped adolescents’ social interactions, raising concerns regarding the formation of social attitudes within educational settings. This study aims to examine the interplay between parenting styles and the intensity of social media use in shaping students’ social attitudes at the junior secondary school level. Methodology: Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with students and parents, systematic classroom observations, and documentation analysis, and were validated using data triangulation techniques. Main Findings: The findings reveal that authoritative (democratic) parenting, characterized by a balanced combination of behavioral demands and emotional responsiveness, plays a crucial role in fostering positive social attitudes, including self-regulation, empathy, and collaborative skills. Students raised within a democratic family climate demonstrate internalized moral reasoning, enabling them to maintain socially appropriate behavior without reliance on external supervision. In contrast, excessive social media use is associated with social withdrawal, fragmented attention, and diminished quality of face-to-face interactions in school contexts. High levels of digital engagement were found to displace opportunities for direct interpersonal communication, leading to what can be described as social atrophy and alienation. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study contributes to the literature by highlighting the protective function of authoritative parenting in mitigating the negative social effects of intensive digital media use. The results underscore that the family remains a critical socialization arena in the digital era, capable of strengthening adolescents’ social resilience when supported by effective communication and guided autonomy.

Abstract

Background: Improving the quality of learning in elementary schools depends heavily on teachers' ability to develop high-quality, innovative, and student-centered teaching materials. Observations indicate that many elementary school teachers in Madiun City still face challenges in developing high-quality teaching materials, due to limited time, creativity, and a lack of understanding of the ideal standards for developing such materials. Elementary school teachers in Madiun City require comprehensive training. The purpose of this training is to implement and analyze the effectiveness of a training program for developing high-quality AI-assisted teaching materials that meet the needs of elementary school teachers. Method: This community service program is implemented by UNIPMA lecturers. The target participants are 50 elementary school teachers in Madiun City. This community service program uses a two-month participatory approach through four stages: outreach, training in developing teaching materials, training in using AI, and monitoring and evaluation. Results: The data showed that 96% of teachers understood the concept of developing high-quality teaching materials, 94% could use AI applications to create digital textbooks, and 92% expressed satisfaction with the community service team's service. Conclusions: The implementation of AI-assisted training to develop high-quality teaching materials was effective in improving teachers' competence while also encouraging more creative, adaptive learning aligned with the demands of 21st-century education.
