Abstract

Troso woven cloth, located in Troso village, Jepara city, is one of the various Indonesian cultural heritages first discovered in AD. The purposes of this study are: 1) to investigate the woven cloth and its uses, the relationship between woven cloth with cultural and religious traditions, and the relationship between the woven cloth and local identity; 2) to design a new motif of Troso woven cloth that incorporates the elements of Jepara culture. The study used a practice-based research approach. The data were collected by purposive sampling technique. The results showed that the local community commonly uses woven fabric products as decorative. Troso cloth is also used to design attires, gamis dresses, or koko shirts for the feast day or formal events. The craftsmen of Troso woven fabrics made in Jepara primarily receive orders with motifs from other regions, including Bali, Sumatra, and Kalimantan. In contrast, the original woven fabric motifs distinctive from Troso are rarely known to the general public. The study formulates a new digital-based motif of the Troso fabric pattern that displays the iconic elements of Jepara city. The iconic depictions of Jepara are in the form of turtles, Jepara wooden carvings, and wave patterns. This research is expected to elevate the Troso fabric’s identity as a local identity of Jepara city and contribute to the Troso village community to develop the Troso fabric unique to the region.

Abstract

This study explores the development of innovative wayang craft designs in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. This is necessary research because wayang functions as a medium of contextual communication between the puppeteer and an audience by transmitting the values of life through entertainment. However, it is rare to find all-night-long wayang performances currently; there is a considerable probability of this craft going extinct in the next few years. This is a research and development method. The type of research and development uses the ADDIE model. Data collection techniques were carried out through interviews, observations, and documentation of Wayang Godhong. The respondents were tobacco farmers and puppeteers in Magelang City, Central Java Province, Indonesia. The result led to the development of Wayang Godhong design which adopts the structures and shape of tobacco leaves. Despite the use of this leaf, the message “smoking is violated” is boldly written on its body. The researcher also implemented the Wayang Godhong product through a puppet show entitled “Smoking Violated” performed on youth and social activists in Magelang Regency. The message from the show is social criticism to the public of the prohibition on smoking in public places, which is still being violated. The results showed that the public accepted the Wayang Godhong performance and positively impacted public knowledge and awareness regarding the prohibition of smoking in public places.

Abstract

Abstract. Solo's specialty souvenir products have great potential to develop as a cultural identity as well as a superior regional economic commodity. Ironically, many souvenir products still use packaging that is not visually attractive, has minimal information, and does not reflect local characteristics. This study aims to develop packaging design innovation through the application of composite cans as an eco-friendly alternative for Solo's specialty souvenir products. The study focused on the process of designing visual label designs, selecting packaging materials, and the stages of production and design evaluation. The method used was a descriptive qualitative approach with field observation and design experiments. The design process included the development of a visual identity implemented on the packaging label applied to composite cans measuring 9.9x7 cm and 7.3x17 cm. The results of the study showed that composite can packaging was able to provide visual appeal that had an impact on the selling value of the product. The design of the packaging label strengthens the image of Solo's specialty culinary products that are authentic, high quality and have high selling value. This innovation is expected to help MSMEs compete in a wider market with packaging that is superior in terms of aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability.

Abstract

Early childhood education is the most valuable time to shape personality. Picture storybooks are an effective visual medium and play an important role in stimulating children's interest in reading and understanding because of their attractive visualization. Children absorb information more easily through images than text. However, in the digital era of Society 5.0, Indonesia still faces the challenge of low interest in reading and the lack of instilling character values from an early age. This condition demands the presence of innovative and relevant educational media to form a capable and characterful future generation. As a solution, an illustrated children's storybook “The Amazing Bitter Melon” with the theme of diversity and mutual respect was designed. This research uses qualitative methods through in-depth research, visual exploration and direct validation from children. The result of this design is a 24-page illustration of a children's storybook entitled “The Amazing Bitter Melon”, designed using a combination of manual and digitalization techniques. The goal is to convey a moral message about the importance of appreciating differences from an early age. This illustration design is not just an artistic process, but a visual strategy to form empathetic and tolerant children's characters.

Abstract

With the rise of digital technology, social media platforms such as Instagram and YouTube have become essential tools for disseminating educational materials, reaching a broader and younger audience. This project focuses on the design of virtual characters as a supportive tool for educational content production by the Anantaka Foundation, a non-governmental organization dedicated to social education in Semarang. Virtual YouTubers (VTubers), animated characters who interact with audiences via video platforms, represent a growing phenomenon in digital content creation. This project proposes creating a VTuber model that aligns with Anantaka's signature brand identity, aiming to enhance the foundation's outreach, especially among teenagers, by integrating anime art styles. The design process involved several stages, including brainstorming, sketching, outlining, coloring, and rendering, using digital tools such as Clip Studio Paint. The final product will serve not only as a visual mascot but also as an engaging element in Anantaka's educational content across social media platforms. By creating a virtual character, this project seeks to attract new audiences, maintain brand identity, and offer a fresh, interactive way to disseminate educational information. This innovative approach demonstrates the potential of VTubers beyond entertainment, proving their effectiveness in the fields of education and social outreach.
