Abstract

This study examines how the violation of Grice’s cooperative maxims—quantity, quality, relation, and manner—elicits humor in YouTube clips from Steve Harvey’s TV Show. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, this research analyzes social media data from the show’s YouTube channel. The analysis applies a pragmatic identity framework and follows the data analysis techniques outlined by Miles and Huberman (1984). Key findings reveal how different types of maxim violations, influenced by contextual factors, contribute to humor production in a talk show format. This study offers valuable insights into the role of conversational implicature in humor, particularly within contemporary media, and contributes to the broader field of discourse analysis and humor studies. By examining how humor is constructed through maxim flouting, the research highlights its implications for understanding humor in digital media and its cultural significance in global media contexts.

Abstract

Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) declared itself as a conservation university with 3 main pillars, namely: (1) values and character, (2) arts and culture, and (3) natural resources and physical environment. UNNES believes the environmental crisis cannot be overcome only through practical and technical actions but it also attempts to change the way humans view and behave towards the environment. One indicator of natural resources pillars and the environment is green transportation. To implement green transportation, UNNES develops an internal transportation system to guide the use of vehicles, roads and parking areas on the campus. The use of regulated vehicles included motorized and non-motorized vehicles. The target of implementing a green transportation system was to reduce emissions in the campus environment to a minimum level. Motorized vehicles must obey the directional traffic signs applied in the campus environment and be only allowed to park in designated parking areas. Sufficient space for bicycle traffic, environmentally-friendly vehicles, and pedestrians on the sideways were preferred. Motor vehicle noise levels must not exceed 55 dB. Special vehicle traffic, among others, such as garbage transporters, watering plants, fire engines, and special-licensed vehicles were regulated under applicable regulations. Inspection tasks were carried out by security vehicles that can go through all roads in the campus environment in the direction of the designated lane, except in unlikely emergencies. Environmentally-friendly vehicles in the form of electric and non-fossil cars operated on Monday-Friday from 6:00 to 18:00 and were free. Markings with different colors, and bicycle lanes were used to differentiate between motorized vehicles. Campus parking points consisted of a central parking point and several auxiliary parking units. The central parking in the Multi-purpose Building was used for motorized vehicles or bicycles and was guarded 24 hours. Meanwhile, the auxiliary parking units were located in each work unit area which also had a security system. People with disabilities were facilitated through special signposts.

Abstract

This study explores the application of cooperative principles and illocutionary force in Samsung Indonesia"™s Instagram Reels captions from August 2024. The study aims to evaluate how Grice"™s maxims"”quality, quantity, relevance, and manner"”are employed in captions and how these principles trigger illocutionary acts, particularly calls to action (CTAs). A qualitative approach was used to analyze the linguistic and pragmatic strategies of the captions, focusing on their effectiveness in engaging audiences and influencing behavior. The analysis reveals a strong adherence to the maxims of relevance and quantity, with captions effectively aligning with Reel content and providing sufficient actionable information. However, occasional lapses in the maxims of quality and manner indicate areas for improvement, such as reducing promotional ambiguity and simplifying overly complex phrasing. These improvements could enhance the captions"™ clarity and factual precision. Illocutionary force analysis highlights a predominant use of directive acts, with CTAs designed to prompt specific audience actions, such as exploring products or participating in events. Expressive acts, aimed at evoking emotional responses, were present but less frequently, reflecting a focus on action-oriented engagement. Commissive and assertive acts were minimally observed, indicating a preference for short-term engagement strategies over trust-building. This study concludes that Samsung Indonesia effectively integrates pragmatic principles with strategic CTAs to drive audience interaction and brand engagement. These findings provide valuable insights into optimizing linguistic strategies for social media marketing and contribute to the broader understanding of digital communication practices.

Abstract

Rapid global change and the demands of 21st-century education have created an urgent need to develop students’ higher-order thinking skills (HOTS), critical, creative, and problem-solving abilities, yet evidence on how flipped learning (FL) supports these skills remains fragmented. This systematic literature review addresses that gap by synthesizing recent studies (2021–2025) on the impact of FL on HOTS across formal education levels and diverse cultural contexts, with particular attention to implications for sustainable education. Following PRISMA guidelines, 32 peer-reviewed empirical studies were identified from Scopus, ERIC, and ProQuest using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Methodological quality was appraised using a simplified CASP checklist, and inductive thematic synthesis was employed to identify patterns in pedagogy, technology use, and HOTS outcomes. Findings indicate that FL can enhance cognitive engagement, learner autonomy, and performance when integrated with inquiry-based and collaborative strategies; critical thinking often improved through structured argumentation, creativity through project-based and digital tasks, and problem-solving through real-world, team-based learning. However, effects varied by discipline, education level, and contextual factors such as digital readiness and instructional design quality; several studies reported minimal gains in low-tech or weakly scaffolded settings. These results underscore FL’s potential as a sustainable pedagogical framework that optimizes resources and fosters lifelong learning, but also highlight gaps: most studies were small-scale, quasi-experimental, and lacked longitudinal or cross-cultural comparison. Future research should adopt more rigorous, context-sensitive designs and explore how FL compares with other active learning models to inform curriculum and teacher training policies.

Abstract

This study was motivated by a lack of understanding of how students experience the role transition from task taker to co-designer in a dialogic CLIL learning context. This study investigated civil engineering students' perceptions of their challenges in dialogic speaking tasks within a CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) context. Using an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, data were collected through closed ended questionnaires from 32 participants, open ended questionnaires from 8 selected participants, and in-depth interviews with 3 participants. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis. Findings revealed key challenges faced by students, including the need for clearer instructional support, emotional anxiety, technical difficulties, and linguistic barriers. Students reported a moderate need for more explicit guidance and examples, with anxiety emerging as the most significant affective challenge. Technical issues, such as difficulties in recording and uploading assignments and time management, were also identified as barriers to effective participation. This study emphasizes the importance of providing appropriate scaffolding, emotional support, and improving technical facilities to enhance student engagement. In conclusion, active student engagement as co-designers in dialogic CLIL practices encourages a shift in students' roles from mere task implementers to reflective and collaborative participants. Integrating quantitative and qualitative insights in this study provides important implications for educators, highlighting the need for deliberate task design and tailored support to foster student agency and facilitate deeper learning outcomes in dialogic CLIL environments.

Abstract

The construction of professional identity among English teachers in private Islamic junior high schools in Indonesia is a multifaceted process influenced by cultural, religious, and institutional factors. Utilizing Bourdieu’s Social Practice theory, which encompasses the concepts of habitus, capital, and field, this study aims to explore how these elements shape teacher agency and professional identity in this unique educational context. Through a qualitative research approach, involving in-depth interviews, data were collected from an English teacher at a private Islamic Junior high school. The participant was selected from among English teachers to represent them at an Islamic private school. The participant is considered to have qualified as a professional English teacher. He has participated in the in-service teacher certification program and has passed, receiving certification benefits. The findings reveal that teachers’ professional identities are shaped not only by their pedagogical skills and knowledge (capital) but also by their alignment with the religious and cultural values of the Islamic school environment (habitus). This alignment influences his sense of agency, affecting how he navigates his roles within the institutional structure (field). This research is particularly valuable for educators, school administrators, and policymakers involved in teacher education and professional development. It suggests that teacher education programs should incorporate strategies that address the cultural context of Islamic education while promoting teacher agency, ultimately benefiting those seeking to enhance the quality and effectiveness of English language teaching in similar educational settings.

Abstract

Reading is a fundamental language skill that plays a key role in students’ academic success, yet in faith-based schools English reading instruction often lacks integration with Islamic values and character formation. While previous studies have highlighted the need for contextualized materials, limited research has offered a systematic model that aligns English reading with Islamic content and the Emancipated Curriculum (Kurikukum Merdeka). This study therefore aimed to design, validate, and evaluate an English reading instructional model that incorporates Islamic themes and the ten Muwashafat. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) design using the ADDIE framework, the study involved English teachers and students at an Integrated Islamic Senior High School in Semarang, Indonesia. Data were gathered through collaborative classroom action research (CAR) combining questionnaires, observations, interviews, and pre/post tests. The model produced includes a conceptual framework, syllabus, lesson plans, and Islamic-themed reading texts structured through the IMPACT sequence (Initiate, Map, Perceive, Analyze, Construct, Think back). Expert evaluation confirmed its feasibility with average ratings of 3.53–3.67, while classroom implementation demonstrated effectiveness, as students’ reading scores increased from 6.8 (pre-test) to 7.8 (post-test), alongside positive improvements in engagement, classroom climate, and character development. The findings conclude that integrating Islamic content with character-based values strengthens English reading instruction in faith-based contexts, and future researchers are encouraged to adapt and expand the model across diverse educational settings.

Abstract

This study addresses a critical gap in maritime communication within the Indonesian context, where engine room communication typically involves a hybrid of Bahasa Indonesia and unstandardized English technical terms. While international regulations like the Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) mandate English, they do not account for this prevalent code-mixing practice, creating significant risks of miscommunication linked to maritime incidents. To mitigate these risks, this research developed a specialized, corpus-based Maritime English dictionary for Indonesian Engine Room Crew (ERC). Adopting a qualitative, corpus-aided lexicographic design, the study compiled and analyzed a corpus of authentic Indonesian engine-room texts including logbooks and technical manuals, to identify high-frequency English technical terms and their contextual usage patterns. The findings confirm the existence of a core lexicon of English terms that are systematically embedded into formulaic Bahasa Indonesia phrases, representing the functional norm of technical discourse. The resulting thematically structured dictionary, validated by subject matter experts, serves as a practical tool to standardize this critical vocabulary. The study's novelty lies in its dedicated focus on this hybrid linguistic domain, aiming to enhance communication clarity, operational safety, and the effectiveness of Maritime English training for Indonesian marine engineering personnel.
