Abstract

Abstract

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans H) is composed of secondary metabolite compounds, among which flavonoids significantly contribute to its immunomodulatory properties. Using the carbon clearance method, this study aims to determine the efficacy of nutmeg flesh extract (NFE) as an immunomodulator. Negative control (Na-CMC 0.5%), normal control (Na-CMC 0.5%), immunostimulant positive control (Imboost® Force 0.91mg/20 g BW of mice), immunosuppressant positive control (methylprednisolone® 0.015 mg/20 g BW of mice), dose I (5 mg/20 g BW of mice), dose II (10 mg/20 g BW of mice), and dose III (20 mg/20 g BB mice) comprised the seven groups of 35 white male mice (DDY). The assessed parameters included organ index, absorbance, and the phagocytosis constant and index. The immunostimulant effect of NFE was demonstrated by the phagocytosis index values of 1.225 (indicating moderate immunostimulation), 1.512 (indicating moderate immunostimulation), and 2.202 (indicating strong immunostimulation) for NFE dose I, II, and III, respectively. The lymphoid organ index may have increased among the three NFE treatment groups, according to the results of organ index measurements. We can conclude, Nutmeg Flesh Extract (NFE) has an immunomodulatory effect in the immunostimulant category, as well as increased phagocytosis activity and lymphoid organ index.

Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia, defined as blood cholesterol levels exceeding 200 mg/dL, is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Traditional Indonesian medicinal plants, such as Javanese chili (Piper retrofractum) and lemon (Citrus limon), have long been recognized for their potential lipid-lowering properties. This study aimed to scientifically evaluate the hypocholesterolemic effect of a combined P. retrofractum and C. limon extract in a hypercholesterolemic rat model. Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to seven groups: a normal control, a negative control (Na-CMC), a positive control (simvastatin 0.018 mg/200 g BW), a scientific herbal formula (0.18 g/200 g BW), and three treatment groups receiving P. retrofractum and C. limon in ratios of 1:1, 1:2, and 2:1. Hypercholesterolemia was induced using a cholesterol-cholate-thiouracil (CCT) mixture alongside a high-fat diet. Total cholesterol levels were quantified using the Cholesterol Oxidase-Peroxidase Aminoantipyrine (CHOD-PAP) method. After 21 days of treatment, all P. retrofractum and C. limon-treated groups demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in total cholesterol compared to the negative control (p <0.05). Notably, the 1:1 and 1:2 ratios of P. retrofractum to C. limon yielded the most substantial cholesterol reductions (44% and 43%, respectively), comparable to the scientific herbal formula and superior to simvastatin (30%). In contrast, the 2:1 ratio showed a comparatively lower reduction (38%), suggesting a potential inhibitory effect of excessive P. retrofractum on C. limon's lipid-lowering properties. These findings collectively highlight the promising potential of optimized P. retrofractum and C. limon combinations, particularly at 1:1 and 1:2 ratios, as effective natural interventions for managing hypercholesterolemia.

Abstract

The fruit of Pandanus tectorius, commonly known as screw pine or sea pandan, contains various secondary metabolites with significant therapeutic potential but remains underutilized in clinical applications. This review summarizes findings from 2014 to 2025 regarding its phytochemical composition and pharmacological effects. Sixteen bioactive compounds have been identified, including pandanusin A, bergapten, scoparone, scopoletin, several lignans, isoamericanin A, kaempferol, chrysin, phenolic acids, betulinic acid, and β-sitosterol. These constituents demonstrate antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, and anticancer activities. Mechanistic actions include inhibition of alpha-glucosidase, reduction of oxidative stress, and induction of cytotoxicity in cancer cells. The ethyl acetate fraction, in particular, exhibits strong activity against HeLa cells. Novel delivery systems, such as nanoemulsions, are being explored to enhance solubility and bioavailability. Additionally, preclinical studies suggest roles in immune modulation, wound healing, and pain relief. Although promising, further clinical validation and formulation standardization are needed. This review highlights the potential of P. tectorius fruit as a candidate for evidence-based phytotherapeutic development.

Abstract

Atherosclerosis, a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, is closely related to dyslipidemia. This study evaluated the cardioprotective effects of red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. rubrum) extracted using a Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent (NADES) on lipid profiles and the risk of atherosclerosis in rats induced with an atherogenic diet and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups: normal control, negative control, positive control (Simvastatin), and two treatment groups receiving red ginger extract at 25 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg body weight (BW). After 24 days of treatment, the 25 mg/kg BW dose significantly reduced total and LDL cholesterol while increasing HDL levels compared with the negative control (p < 0.05), showing comparable effects to Simvastatin. The 50 mg/kg BW dose did not significantly reduce total and LDL cholesterol but produced the highest HDL level. All treatment groups showed a significantly lower Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP) than the negative control, with the lowest AIP in the 50 mg/kg BW group. These findings demonstrate the cardioprotective potential of red ginger extracted with NADES as a natural, environmentally friendly approach to preventing dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis.

Abstract

This study aimed to compare the anti-hyperuricemia effects of ethanolic extracts from the peels of nangka, kepok, and uli bananas in male Sprague Dawley rats. Twenty-five rats (5–7 weeks old; 150–200 g) were randomly divided into five groups (n = 5 per group): a negative control (0.5% CMC-Na), a positive control (allopurinol 2.52 mg/200 g BW), and three treatment groups receiving 70 mg/200 g BW of each banana peel extract. The banana peels were extracted using the Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE) method with 70% ethanol. Hyperuricemia was induced for 10 days by oral administration of chicken liver juice (2 ml/kg body weight) for nine consecutive days, followed by a single intraperitoneal injection of potassium oxonate (50 mg/kg body weight) on the tenth day.  Uric acid levels were measured using the uricase-PAP method and quantified with a microplate reader at 570 nm. Blood samples were collected from the tail vein and analyzed to determine uric acid concentration before and after treatment. Data were analyzed using a randomized block design (RBD), followed by ANOVA and Duncan’s post hoc test (α ≤ 0.05). The kepok banana peel extract showed the highest uric acid reduction (93.60%), followed by nangka (90.21%) and uli (81.26%). These results suggest that all three banana peel extracts possess significant anti-hyperuricemic activity, with kepok peel extract demonstrating the greatest potential for uric acid reduction.   Keywords: Jackfruit Peel Extract, Cavendish Banana Peel Extract, Plantain Peel Extract, Anti-Hyperuricemia, Uric Acid
