Abstract

Nutmeg is one of the leading plantation commodities in South Bacan Timur Subdistrict, South Halmahera Regency. However, its productivity and product quality have not yet reached optimal levels compared to other production centers. In addition, the lack of an integrated marketing system and the dominance of intermediary traders have resulted in a relatively weak bargaining position for farmers. This study aims to identify the internal and external factors affecting nutmeg marketing and to determine the most priority marketing and development strategies for the nutmeg commodity. The research was conducted from August to November 2025 in Tabajaya, Wayaua, and Tabangame villages, involving 30 nutmeg farmers and 5 traders. The analytical methods used were SWOT analysis to formulate alternative strategies and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to determine strategy priorities. The results of the SWOT analysis identified four marketing strategies for farmers, namely Participatory Marketing Based on Efficiency, Quality Standardization as a Partnership Requirement, Farmers’ Financial Independence, and Community-Based Quality Control. Meanwhile, four marketing strategies for traders were identified: Volume and Logistics Expansion, Cash Flow Acceleration and Fixed Contracts, Purchase Price Leadership, and Risk Management with a “Just-in-Time” approach. The AHP results indicate that the priority strategy for farmers is quality standardization as a partnership requirement with a weight of 0.3780, while for traders it is volume and logistics expansion with a weight of 0.4106. These strategies are expected to improve marketing efficiency and welfare.

Abstract. Ajam MR, Rasulu H, Ashari R, Tridtitanakiat PC, Murtini ES, Jabid AW, Kamaluddin AK, Nurjannah S, Fatmawati M, Rozaki Z, Abdullah H. 2026. Supply chain analysis of agricultural and plantation commodities in North Maluku, Indonesia. Asian J Agric 10 (1): g100122. https://doi.org/10.13057/asianjagric/g100122. North Maluku is an archipelagic province in eastern Indonesia where agricultural and plantation supply chains are shaped by dispersed geography and reliance on maritime transport. This study applied a qualitative approach, combining in-depth interviews and field observation. Thirty informants were purposively selected, consisting of 15 farmers, 5 intermediaries, and 10 local traders engaged in agricultural distribution. The research examined supply chain structures, transport modes, and logistical constraints across seven major islands-Hiri, Halmahera, Bacan, Obi, Morotai, Sula, and Taliabu. The results identified five distinct supply chain typologies. Types 1-3 are associated with local vegetable distribution and short intra-island flows from farmers to end consumers, local retailers, or collectors. Type 4 reflects inter-island trade networks, commonly used for locally abundant fruits and for imported products such as carrots, potatoes, and garlic. Type 5 is for the plantation crops, such as nutmeg, cloves, and coconuts, which are largely export-oriented and involve the longest chain with multiple intermediaries. Across all types, profitability is strongly influenced by transport costs and weather-dependent marine disruptions, affecting both the availability and price stability of agricultural products as essential commodities. To enhance food security and reduce dependency on external sources, there is a need to strengthen local agricultural production through crop diversification, infrastructure development, and targeted farmer support initiatives. The results provide insights into how archipelagic geography shapes agricultural supply chains and point to strategies for building more resilient and equitable food systems.

Abstract

Vegetable candle (sayur lilin in Indonesia) (Saccharum edule) is a traditional food typical of North Maluku, which is processed from sugarcane flowers and cooked using coconut milk. The application of canning technology acts as an effective preservation method to increase the shelf life of products while ensuring food safety. This research aims to analyze added value and formulate the right development strategy for the canned vegetable candle industry. This study uses SWOT analysis and value-added analysis with the Hayami approach. A study of the data revealed that canned vegetable candles had a 70.57% enhanced value ratio. The internal conditions of the business were in the moderate category, while the external environment showed strong conditions. Based on the IE matrix, the canned vegetable business is in Quadrant II with a growth and building strategy position. Thus, the best options for development are market entry tactics, market development, and product development. The SWOT analysis and added value results also indicate that canned veggies have a lot of room for growth. Recommended strategies include promotion through social media, product socialization, collaboration with relevant stakeholders and local governments, and adaptation of recipes to increase product competitiveness.
