Abstract

This study explores the status and role of women within Sikh doctrine, aiming to contribute to and enrich academic discussions on the intersection of religious doctrine and gender studies. Using a qualitative approach that focuses on religion and gender, the research employs a library-based methodology, analyzing various sources and relevant prior studies. The findings demonstrate that women in Sikhism are granted equal status to men, rooted in the doctrine that emphasizes an intimate relationship between humans and the divine, where gender holds no significance in the connection to God. Moreover, the study delves into human relationships as shaped by behaviors, attitudes, and societal norms during the Sikh Gurus' era, illustrating the ideal dynamics between men and women. Despite Sikh teachings of equality, women in the Sikh community still face challenges in accessing leadership roles, as cultural and historical narratives often prioritize male dominance. The contributions of Sikh women have been historically marginalized, leaving subsequent generations with limited role models. This research offers both theoretical insights into Sikhism and gender and practical implications for encouraging the Sikh community, particularly men, to uphold Guru Nanak’s vision of gender equality.

Abstract

In the era of globalization, the complexity of social, economic, and environmental challenges has resulted in the decline of the role of traditional religious institutions, as well as the emergence of secularism and religious pluralism. This study aims to reveal the response of religion to the phenomena of secularization, conflict, and economic inequality in the 21st century with a qualitative approach through literature studies. The results of the study indicate that secularism has become a contemporary issue, with a decline in religious affiliation among the younger generation, especially in Europe; however, projections for 2050 show a resurgence of religious adherents and an important role for religion in society. In addition, increasing religious diversity creates challenges and tensions between communities, but many religions respond by building solidarity through dialogue and peace campaigns. Amidst the increasing economic gap, religions respond by reviewing relevant teachings and principles, such as the simplicity movement that combines spiritual values with ways of earning a living, ethical education in business, and playing an active role in anti-poverty campaigns and other social issues. This paper adds insight into the role of religion in building sustainable social solidarity and economic ethics amidst contemporary challenges.

Abstract

Theology is one of the critical factors for the survival of Muslims. However, with the shift in all aspects included in the lives of Muslims, theology cannot adjust or even solve all the problems occurring in the body of Islam. This research aimed at discussing and studying the theology of Leftist Islam in the thought of Hassan Hanafi to obtain its authenticity. The method used in this study was the historical-philosophical method. This historical method is to describe the history and development of Islamic theology. In comparison, the philosophical method examines a character's thoughts and analyzes the thoughts being studied. The results of this study explained that Leftist Islam is an idea, concept, and new theology initiated by Hassan Hanafi in response to the challenges of the West. In the Leftist Islam, Hassan Hanafi has three crucial elements, namely revitalizing the classical scientific tradition, opposing Western civilization, and analyzing the reality of Muslims.

Abstract

This study analyzes the practice of social egg freezing for unmarried women from the perspective of Islamic law and its relevance to maqāṣid al-sharī'ah and gender justice. The phenomenon of modernity has led Muslim women to delay marriage and pregnancy for education and careers, creating tension between professional demands and biological reproductive limitations. This qualitative research employs a library-based method with a normative-theological approach, integrating tafsir, maqāṣid al-sharī'ah, qiyās, and sadd al-dharī'ah. Data were obtained from primary sources including Qur'anic verses, classical and contemporary tafsir works, and authoritative fatwas, supported by modern scientific literature. The findings indicate that social egg freezing can be understood as a form of human agency (ikhtiyar) to preserve reproductive potential while responding to the social realities of modern women. Legally, this practice falls within the framework of the "Conditional Permissibility Doctrine" (al-ibāḥah al-muqayyadah), namely conditional permissibility prioritizing lineage protection (ḥifẓ al-nasl). This permissibility requires use only within a valid marriage, prohibition of donation and surrogacy, medical safety guarantees, and control of lineage mixing risks. From a maqāṣid perspective, this practice relates to the protection of lineage, intellect (ḥifẓ al-'aql), property (ḥifẓ al-māl), and human dignity. Thus, social egg freezing can be positioned as a preventive and adaptive instrument of maṣlaḥah. This study affirms that Islamic law possesses methodological flexibility to respond to biotechnological developments justly and contextually, while strengthening women's position as autonomous legal subjects without disregarding Sharia principles.
