Abstract

Water scarcity causes the utilization of dryland is not maximal in supporting agricultural production in Indonesia. Efficient irrigation technology which is economically affordable by farmers needs to develop. This research aimed to provide an irrigation ring typed emitter that can be placed under the soil surface. In this research, porous materials made of textiles were tested for its permeability that matches the permeability of the soil. We got 5 textiles made of Legacy having permeability of 1.54 cm h-1, Colosal 0.76 cm h-1, Veronica 8.16 cm h-1, Kyramat 5.28 cmh-1, and Parasut 0.06 cmh-1. This selected textile was rolled covering a ring typed perforated water hos (ring emitter). These emitters were then tested to irrigate potted water melon plants in a greenhouse. The results show ring emitters covered with Legacy and Colossal have better water productivity, 0.64 kg m-3 and 1.90 kg m-3, respectively with the averaged water discharge 0.52 l h-1 and 1.08 l h-1.

Abstract

Controlling water table is the way to manage water in SRI paddy field. Farmers tend to apply different water table depend on their local water management practices. It may have different effect on plant growth that can be seen in the number of tillers. In this study, tiller development of SRI paddy was studied by using experimental pots under various water tables treatments. The water table is controlled by using mariotte tube and set at -12, -7, -5, -3, 0, and +2 cm from the soil surface. The result shows that soil moisture (Ɵ) were fluctuated due to intermittent irrigation and water table treatment. It affects the tiller growths rate that varied with average value 0.21-0.29 tiller/day. The first tiller appears at 18 days after transplanting (DAT). The tillers number keep increasing until reaching the highest number (around 63 to 72 DAT). This empirical study showed that setting water table at -5 cm under soil surface in SRI paddy cultivation is the best to reach high tiller number, and highest land and water productivity compare to another water table treatments. Consistency in producing tiller from beginning tiller production until the end of cultivation season could be seen from this treatment.

Abstract

Increased awareness of precision agriculture in water management, requires various ideas and methods for its application in the fields. One idea that can be categorized into precision farming as well as appropriate technology, is evaporative irrigation. Evaporative irrigation is an idea to control the provision of irrigation water based on the direct response of plant water needs, namely evapotranspiration. The objectives of this study were to: (1) examine the theoretical aspects of the evaporative irrigation to be applied to plots of rice fields in a plot of plots with irrigation units, (2) laying out design principles for evaporative irrigation valve closures. The results showed that, theoretically, a controller pipe was needed which would be an indicator for thick water in the plot of rice fields. The pipe controller regulates the opening of the irrigation lid to the plot based on the float-ballast principle. The design principle is carried out by simulating the reduction in the controller water level of the controller which illustrates the decrease in thick water plots. Water depth that is still tolerated for rice growth will be the limit for the provision of irrigation water to the plots. Amount of irrigation water provided is equal to the value of plant water needs in the ongoing rice growth phase. One example of the design of the controller pipe water level to start and stop irrigation is at 117.8 mm water level and 300 mm respectively. The total water needs of one crop-season is calculated to be 625 mm. With the application of evaporative irrigation, the initial conditions of sufficient water do not require the provision of irrigation water until the 31st day. Irrigation water application after that, until harvesting, requires only 477 mm. Giving this water follows the plant water requirements calculated on a day-to-day basis.

Abstract

Floating hydroponic system (THST) is a hydroponic technique that its planting medium is placed on a floating styrofoam in a large pool that contains the nutrient solution. The common obstacles faced by this hydroponic technique is the absence of additional water during the growing season, so the water level in the pool is shrinking as the water is consumed by the plants. This study was to determine the rate of water consumption that fluctuated during the planting period and the water requirements which is necessary to maintain the water level. We found the averaged of lettuce water consumption was 0.74 mm/day. The accumulated water consumption for 54 days in two periods of growing season was 40 mm. The rate of lettuce water consumption at the beginning of the planting season was the smaller amounted to 0.75 mm/day and the greatest appeared at the end of the growing season equal to 2.09 mm/day. Finally, the water requirements to maintain the water level initially is 0.76 liters/day/m2 and then increase until reaches 2.09 liters/day/m2 at the end of the growing season or it is equivalent to 7.59 m3 per 90 m2 planting area.

Abstract

System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is known as alternative rice farming for the mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. There are two main gasses emitted from paddy fields, i.e., methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Both of these gases have different characteristics as response on water availability in the fields which is represented by groundwater levels. Global Warming Potential (GWP) is used as an index that allowed comparisons of the global warming impacts of different gases at specific time period to warm the earth and it is equivalent to the value of the potential of CO2. This study aimed to analysis the global warming potential from different water regimes with SRI practices. Achieving the objective, rice cultivation with three water regimes was carried out during one planting season (14 April until 5 August 2016) in experimental plots of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering IPB, Bogor, Java West. The regimes were continous flooding, moderate and dry regimes, respectively. The results showed that dry regime has the lowest global warming potential than those others regimes. Its potential was 34% and 41% lower than those for flooding and moderate regimes, respectively. In addition, dry regime produced more grain yield. Its productivity was 21% greater than that flooding regime. These results were obtained from specific climate and location. To corroborate the results, further research is needed under different weather conditions and multi-locations.

Abstract

South Sumatra is one of low-lying provinces in Indonesia with a vast area of peatland that is prone to peat fires and floods. Understanding climate patterns in South Sumatra is very important to anticipate the impacts of extreme weathers. This study identified the climate trends and patterns based on the daily data of temperature, rainfall and evapotranspiration obtained from 1975 to 2021 (46 years). Here, the trend and its significance were detected based on the linear regression and Mann-Kendall test approaches. Characteristics of wet/dry season (start, peak, end) were identified annually based on the 6th polynomial equation using rainfall and evapotranspiration data. The results show an increased trend of annual average temperature (0.04oC per year), rainfall (6.83 mm per year), and evapotranspiration (0.77 mm per year). Other findings reveal that the cyclic season in South Sumatra is wet season (starts from 1±30 to 163±79 Julian day), followed by dry season (from 172±152 to 273±90 Julian day), then wet season (until 244±90 Julian day). The mean excess of annual rainfall was 708 mm (593 mm and 114, respectively, for wet and dry season). Further, we found that South Sumatra experienced extreme dry season (8 times) with the longest in 2019 that lasted for 167 days in a row. As a precaution, extreme wet spells may occur in November-December, and March, whereas extreme dry seasons can be found in July-September each year.

Abstract

The development of water treatment and water resources considers the flow rate adjusted using a weir. Weir is designed with many hydraulic factors, including the coefficient of discharge (Cd). Characteristics of the value of Cd show a decreasing trend on triangular and rectangular weirs. The value of Cd varies based on the flow's characteristics and the channel's geometry. Estimation of the best Cd value in flow discharge engineering and sediment deposition is necessary to know the accuracy of weir geometry. Some plans in water treatment and water resource building sometimes assume a Cd value based on literature. This study aims to estimate the value of Cd based on variations in flow rate and was conducted on a laboratory scale with weir shape limitations in the form of triangles and rectangles. The water sample was discharged by a water pump into an open channel. The angle of the weir opening was determined for the rectangular and triangular weir of 90°. Flow monitoring included flow discharge through the use of a current meter. Water was recycled in each measurement with a total of 60 cycles. The Cd values in a triangular weir were greater than in a rectangular weir. The Cd values for the rectangular weir ranged from 0.068 to 0.089, while the Cd values for the triangular weir ranged from 0.557 to 0.598. This value indicated that the greater the flow rate, the lower the Cd value. Therefore, weir configuration of water discharged using a triangular weir was better than a rectangular weir at low flow rates, less than 0.05 m3/s.

Abstract

The main problem for agriculture at tidal lowland swamp is low soil quality and high acidity of soil and high water. The research objective was to investigate how far the effort in increasing tertiary canal network to improve water quality (increasing pH and reducinf iron) in channel and tertiary plot. Field study was conducted at Bandarjaya Village of Jalur 25, Delta Sugihan Kanan, South Sumatra. Field activities were consisted of network investigation  land use and farm enterprise system which located at Primr 13 of Sugihan Kiri and Primer 25 of Sugihan Kanan. The network improvement perfomance was conducted by constructing micro water management (installed the tertiary gate and developen quartey canal) at tertiary plot which consisted of collector channel, sub tertiary channel and control plot which was outfall at quarterly channel downstream end. Water gate having goose neck pipe system was constructed to control water table in tertiary channel. Results of field study showed that land use at the study area was still dominated by rice crop with magnitude of 83% and the rest of 17% was used for rubber plantation, orange planation and mix plantation. The depth of phyrite layer was in the range of 60 to 100 cm below soil surface. Water table surface in October was in the range of 10 to 35 cm. Field adaptation showed that water gate was operated in closed condition (water retention) during vegetative phase. Water retention showed significant to improve rice yield in which water table since November had increased from -10 cm to flooding condition of 15 cm in January. This condition provide sufficient water for rice crop which was similar as the result found at irrigation area. The addition of ameliorant substances such as coconut fiber, and sand semen block at outfall of tertiary and kuartely channels also increase water quality in which water pH was increased from  2.95 to 3.7 and iron concentration was decreased from 4.01 to 0.32 mg/liter. Rice yield was increased from average production of 2 ton/ha to 3 ton/ha. This low production was due to land flushing process which need longer time process for at least 2 to 3 years from current condition as well as other production inputs such as fertilization and ameliorant substances.

Abstract

Aquaculture wastewater contains ammonia, nitrite, and other materials which can contribute to water pollution. Recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) technology offers an alternative approach by utilizing limited water resources to reduce organic contaminants. This research aimed to evaluate the performance of a multimedia filter (FMM), activated carbon filter (KA), and nano-membrane (NF) combination. The study focused on assessing FMM efficiency, determining the optimal filter media thickness, and selecting the appropriate adsorption isotherm model for FMM design. Six combinations of zeolite media thickness (30, 60, 90 cm) and flowrates (22.5; 45 L/min) were tested. The results showed that the highest removal efficiencies for ammonia (99.85%) and nitrite (100%) were achieved with a zeolite thickness of 90 cm and a flow rate of 45 L/min. Integrating FMM with CA and NF units can reduce operational costs without compromising efficiency. The Langmuir model (KL = 90.18 L/mg) for nitrite, and the Temkin (KT = 15.68 L/mg) and Hasely (K = 0.45 L/mg) models for ammonia were identified as the best fit models for estimating adsorption capacity coefficients. These coefficients can be used to predict nitrite and ammonia concentrations in the effluent based on performance testing and statistical analysis.
