Abstract

Abstract

In irrigation and agricultural planning, the crop coefficient value plays an important role in calculating water planning on land. This study aims to calculate the crop coefficient (Kc) of rice in a Nonpowered Automatic Fertigation (FONi) irrigation system combined with a minapadi system as a reference for irrigation planning. This study was conducted experimentally for 99 days in Dramaga, Bogor, using the FONi Minapadi system consisting of a fiberglass tank, a water supply tank, and an automatic float to maintain the water level. Actual evapotranspiration (ETa) data were calculated based on water balance, while potential evapotranspiration (ETo) was modeled using five methods: Penman-Monteith, Turc, Hargreaves, Makkink, and Blaney-Criddle. Model validation was performed using linear regression against the Penman-Monteith method as the standard reference. The results show that the total ETa during the observation period was 421.93 mm. Among the ETo calculation methods, the Turc model provided results closest to the Penman-Monteith method, with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.741 and the lowest sum of squares error (SSE) of 56.026. The calculated Kc values varied throughout the rice growth phase, with the highest value of 1.84 observed during the reproductive phase. The relatively high Kc value reflects significant water demand in the FONi Minapadi system, influenced by system characteristics and environmental conditions. This study concludes that the FONi Minapadi system has the potential to improve irrigation management efficiency in integrated agriculture. However, further research is needed to understand the influence of technical and environmental factors on the Kc value and to compare it with other irrigation systems.

Abstract

Annual flooding during the rainy season at the Bogor City Regional General Hospital since 2016 has created a significant issue, potentially triggering a domino effect impacting the hospital, its visitors, staff, and patients. This study aims to design a rainwater management system to mitigate excessive rainwater puddles, which causes flooding, using the Zero Runoff System (ZROS) concept. The ZROS concept focuses on establishing an eco-drainage system for this government-owned hospital to address the issue of inundation effectively. This study employs rainfall-runoff modeling with statistical methods such as Distribution Testing and Chi-Square Analysis to determine data fit. Hydrological analysis is conducted to calculate design discharge and runoff volumes that can be discharged to detention ponds. The results show that the required storage volume is 72.35 m³, leading to the recommendation of constructing a detention pond system. The proposed detention system consists of two ponds, each measuring 5 m x 3 m with a depth of 2.5 m, providing a total storage capacity of 75 m³ to meet the required runoff control needs. The implementation of this system is expected to provide an integrated solution related to the flood issue at the Bogor City Hospital, considering that the hospital is a public facility that is prone to piles of garbage, for example, a control tub is made before water enters the Detention Pond. The chamber includes a trash screen with a closable outlet to facilitate maintenance and ensure the detention ponds remain effective. Abstract

Unpowered Automatic Fertigation (FONi) is a new technology developed by IPB University. FONi applies the concept of evapotranspiration irrigation, which can meet plants' water needs at any time without using electricity. FONi is a series of plant pots connected to a water supply tank, and the water level is maintained to form a connected vessel system. The nutrient solution can be put into a water tank to make fertilizer application more practical. This activity aims to introduce FONi to the broader community so that it can utilize non-productive land for planting valuable vegetables and getting feedback for further development. Types of vegetables cultivated are long beans intercropped with kale. This activity was carried out in a residential area located on Jl. Burujul II, RW 03, Cipedes, Tasikmalaya City, West Java. Activities range from designing, installing, planting, maintaining, observing, harvesting, and explaining to the community, local government, and mass media. After 14 days, kale was picked, while long beans were picked after 48 days. Within 48 days, the prolonged bean harvest reached 3 Kg with land and water productivity of 2.9 kg m-2 and 2.3 kg L-1, respectively. CCTV monitoring shows prolonged bean picking is still carried out for up to 60 days. The economic value of cultivating long beans and kale in one season exceeds the cost of construction and production. The public's interest is high, implied by a strong desire to apply it. If this activity continues, it is hoped that the nutritional needs and adequacy of safe and healthy vegetables for all residents in the future can be fulfilled and that it will strengthen the image of Tasikmalaya City as a Kota Resik.

Abstract

Abstract

Water scarcity, intensified by climate change and pollution, necessitates innovative irrigation approaches to sustain agricultural productivity. The Automatic Unpowered Fertigator (FONi) represents a solution that integrates automation without electricity, using evapotranspiration-driven subsurface irrigation to deliver water and nutrients directly based on plant demand. Unlike conventional systems, FONi operates entirely without external energy input, offering a low-cost and sustainable alternative for smallholder farmers. Previous applications in various crops have demonstrated significant water savings and increased productivity, indicating its strong potential as a scalable technology for resource-limited agriculture. This study evaluated the performance of FONi in cultivating four eggplant varieties under greenhouse conditions in Bekasi City, an area facing increasing competition for water resources. Over a 118-day growing period, plant growth, water use, crop coefficients (Kc), and productivity were monitored. Results showed Kc values ranging from 0.1 to 1.8, reflecting dynamic water demand throughout plant development. The long purple variety attained the greatest height (99.8 cm), while pondoh and white varieties achieved higher water productivity (up to 4.0 g/L) and land productivity approaching 1,120 g/m². Total irrigation water use was 1,329.3 liters, with an overall application efficiency of 98.9%. These findings demonstrate that integrating FONi with appropriate crop selection provides an efficient and sustainable strategy to optimize water use and enhance yield, supporting precision agriculture and climate-resilient food systems in drought-prone regions.
