Abstract

The total number of cases of sexual abuse against women in Indonesia is increasing every year. However, there are issues with these rules because there is no specific legal framework that controls sexual violence. The students who were dissatisfied with the parliament’s performance then carried out a large demonstration that spread across various cities in Indonesia. Demonstrations are examples of collective action. According to the Social Identity Model of Collective Action (SIMCA) from [6], at least three things can trigger or predict the emergence of collective action, namely social identity, efficacy, and anger. This study uses a quantitative approach with data collection to college students across Indonesia. The data collection process is carried out by an online survey through SurveyMonkey. We collected 107 people with an age range of 17-29 years (Mage=20.33; SD=1.984). The most common age was 21 years (26%). Data was dominated by females with 93 people (87%) and males with 14 people (13%). We analyzed the data using mediation model regression with the PROCESS MACRO Hayes. The results show that group-based anger significantly mediates the effect of politicized identity on collective action. However, politicized identity and group-based anger significantly predict directly on collective action.

Abstract

Background: Traditional massage services are widely used by parents in Indonesia for minor health problems in children such as colds and fatigue. Influenced by cultural beliefs, this practice remains important despite modern medical advances. Riskesdas 2018 reported that 54.1% of South Kalimantan's population uses traditional health services, with 83.3% choosing massage therapy. This study explores the perception and experience of parents in using masseur services as an alternative treatment method. Objective:. To understand the motivations, benefits, and challenges that parents face in choosing massage services Methods: A qualitative approach with semi-structured in-depth interviews with five participants selected through purposive sampling. The data is analyzed thematically to identify key themes. Result: The findings revealed three main themes: (1) motivation for using massage services, which is based on cultural beliefs and previous positive experiences; (2) a comparison between massage services and modern medical services, which emphasizes accessibility, cost efficiency, and convenience; and (3) expectations for the development of professional and standardized massage services. Conclusion: Despite its limitations, traditional massage services have an important role to play in meeting the health needs of Indonesian families due to their affordability and accessibility. However, training and certification are required to improve the security and professionalism of these services. Abstract

In natural disaster conditions, such as floods, there are always disaster volunteers involved in assisting the people affected. Although this is the case, empirical information related to the prosocial behavior of disaster volunteers (such as during floods) is still limited. Several studies concerning prosocial behavior in Indonesia were more focused on this prosocial behavior using general samples, and those of social volunteers (not in the context of natural disasters). This study was aimed at testing the role of cultural values (collectivism and individualism), self-efficacy, and egoism (egoistic motives), regarding the prosocial behavior of flood volunteers. The authors conducted an online cross-sectional survey, of 150 volunteers involved at the time of the large-scale flood disaster in South Kalimantan, in 2021. In the study, the authors utilized measuring instruments which had already passed through a cross-cultural adaption process, and which have been proven to have satisfactory reliability and validity. The participants were chosen through purposive sampling technique, with the criteria being them having been flood volunteers in South Kalimantan and being 18 years or more of age. The results of bivariate correlation testing indicated that only the values of collectivism and self-efficacy were significantly correlated to prosocial behavior. Multiple regression testing found identical results, that partially, the values of collectivism and self-efficacy significantly predicted prosocial behavior, whilst the other variables (the values of individualism and egoistic motives) were not significant. The results of these findings illustrated that the high level of prosocial behavior by flood volunteers was explained by the presence of the value of the culture of collectivism found in Indonesian culture. Besides this, self-efficacy as flood volunteers was an influential factor in volunteer activities. The values of collectivism and self-efficacy simultaneously and significantly predicted prosocial behavior, with an effect size of R2 = .225. The results of this study have implications for the understanding of, and increasing of the level of, prosocial behavior amongst the public, via the values of a culture of collectivism and of self-efficacy.

Abstract

Three challenges of political nature were identified in 2022: increasing number of institutions in many countries in Asia to require journal article publication for graduation of an academic degree, changes in Journal Citation Index (JCITM) policy, and a retraction case in Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology. As a response to these challenges, Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia made several changes. First, we now publish incrementally to accommodate the requirement to publish in time. In Indonesia, as well as in many parts of Asia, publications in journals are increasingly used to satisfy administrative requirements. We have received requests for faster publication due to graduation requirements from authors from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Pakistan. The importance of journal publication is increasing in the region. Second, the everchanging scientific landscape triggers a response from Clarivate Analytics that decided to include Journal Impact Factor (JIFTM) in the subsequent publication of the Journal Citation Reports (JCRTM) in 2023.

Abstract

Citations have become a “currency” of research quality. If the number of papers published is a parameter of scholars’ productivity, the number of citations received by each paper serves as an indicator of the quality of the research. The number of citations is often used to assess the quality of an article. In this bibliometric measure, papers that attract citations are considered to have a meaningful contribution. A high number of citations, especially when they come immediately after the papers are published, indicates that the paper is well accepted by scholars in the field and contributes to the advancement of science.

Abstract

Schizophrenia is often characterized by delusions and hallucinations, which often appear as manifestations of religious delusions in the Banjar cultural context. This phenomenon can be understood through the hyper-religiosity theory, which explains excessive religious behavior in individuals with schizophrenia. This qualitative case study aims to identify the forms of religious delusion in individuals with hyper-religiosity and the underlying causal factors. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations with 10 informants, comprising four individuals with religious delusions selected using purposive sampling based on their experience of studying Tasawwuf and experiencing religious delusions and six significant others. The findings show that delusions appear in the form of recognition as God or Prophet, receiving divine knowledge, and hyper-religiosity behavior seen in excessive worship practices, intolerance of different beliefs, and fanaticism toward religious symbols. Contributing factors include genetic predisposition, medication non-adherence, and traumatic experiences, which intensify psychological symptoms and demonstrate the complex interactions among cultural, psychological, and biological factors. These findings underscore the importance of clinical approaches that are sensitive to the cultural and religious contexts of patients and the need for further research to develop more effective intervention strategies to address religious delusions in individuals with schizophrenia in religious communities.

Abstract

Young voters' low level of political knowledge, which impacts political participation, is still a phenomenon today. The influence of political knowledge on young voters' behavior is still being debated, and there is little empirical evidence, especially regarding political knowledge and voting behavior enhanced through specific educational programs. Therefore, an effective education program is needed to increase political knowledge and the desire of young voters to participate in general elections. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of educational programs in increasing political knowledge and shaping voting behavior among young voters in South Kalimantan Local Elections (Pilkada). We used a quasi-experimental research design by providing extension activities as an online educational intervention program to 41 participants. All participants took three measurement phases, starting from the pre-education program, post-education program, and post-Pilkada phase. The education program was conducted online by providing materials related to the reasons for using the right to vote, information on candidates, considerations for making choices, election techniques, and time and place for the election. The results of the analysis found that educational programs influenced the political knowledge and voting behavior of young voters. Thus, this educational program can significantly and effectively improve young voters' political knowledge and voting behavior.

Abstract

Introduction: Anxiety in the 3rd trimester of pregnant women increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, ranging from 45.9% to 62% and occurs due to either a maturity crisis or a fear of childbirth. It has an impact on the health of the mother and the fetus. A preliminary study at a private mother and children hospital in Palangka Raya in December 2022 showed that 7 out of 10 3rd trimester pregnant women experienced anxiety. Aims: to analyze the relationship between parity, education level, employment status, and income with anxiety level among 3rd trimester pregnant women at a private mother and children hospital in Palangka Raya post-pandemic COVID-19. Method: An observational study with a cross-sectional approach and a representative sample size was 255 respondents from 3rd trimester pregnant women using a non-probability sampling method and a questionnaire as the research instrument. Odds Ratios (ORs) and 95% Confidence Intervals (95% CIs) were calculated by using Multinomial Logistic Regression analyses. Results: Higher education was significantly associated with a low anxiety level (adj. OR 0.266, 95%CI 0.094-0.786; p= 0.012) as well as low income with moderate anxiety of 3rd trimester pregnant women (adj. OR 0.121, 95%CI 0.024-0.613; p=0.011). Conclusion: There is a relationship between education level as well as income and anxiety among 3rd trimester pregnant women at a private mother and children hospital in Palangka Raya.

Abstract

Job Affective Well-Being Scale (JAWS) is a psychological instrument used to measure emotional conditions in the context of work. However, research on the psychometric properties of JAWS in the Indonesian context remains limited. This study aims to test the construct validity of JAWS among 410 Indonesian workers (mean = 34.98; SD = 9.51) using a competing models strategy. This study compares three approaches: Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Exploratory Structural Equation Modelling (ESEM), and Set-ESEM. The results of the model comparison analysis indicated that the Modified 4-Factor Set-ESEM model was the best, balancing statistical accuracy and parsimony and accommodating natural cross-loadings among items within the same valence. The evaluation of measurement invariance across genders confirmed the instrument's stability at the configurational and metric levels, as well as partial scalar invariance. The final JAWS Indonesian version model with the Set-ESEM model shows that this instrument is valid, reliable, and fair in measuring affective well-being at work, and supports its use for research and organisational intervention purposes in Indonesia.
