Abstract

Sociolinguistics is the study of the relationship between language and society, examining how social factors influence language use. This qualitative study investigated the use of translanguaging and language varieties within the sociolinguistic context of communicative practices between lecturers and sixth-semester English Education students at HKBP Nommensen University. The research aimed to identify the types of translanguaging and language varieties employed and to explore their benefits in enhancing classroom communication. Findings revealed that lecturers predominantly utilized language style (16 data) as a form of language variation, reflecting their personal communication approaches. In terms of translanguaging, personal translanguaging (20 data) was most prevalent, indicating a natural integration of multiple linguistic resources. The study highlighted that both language variation and translanguaging significantly improved communication, comprehension, and student engagement. Lecturers and students reported that these practices facilitated the expression of complex ideas, boosted confidence, and fostered a more inclusive learning environment. The research suggests that incorporating translanguaging and language variation, including multilingual resources and the integration of students' first languages, is crucial for optimizing educational outcomes in EFL contexts

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of pauses, overlaps, and backchanneling in political conversations on Najwa Shihab’s YouTube channel, specifically between Najwa and Ahok, using Yule’s (1996) Pragmatics theory. The research method is a descriptive qualitative method with a conversation analysis approach. Data were collected through conversation transcripts and analyzed using conversation analysis theory. The results show that pauses are divided into short and long pauses. Short pauses occurred 6 times, typically happening when a speaker is thinking or formulating the next words, while long pauses occurred 9 times, providing space for the interlocutor to think and respond. Overlaps occurred 26 times and were categorized into three types: difficulty in conversation with an unfamiliar person occurring once, expressions of closeness and solidarity occurring twice, and interruptions occurring 23 times. These overlaps often happened when both speakers spoke simultaneously, arising from awkwardness, enthusiasm, or interruptions to present a different argument or defend a point of view. Additionally, vocal backchannels, such as “mmm,” “yes,” and “okay,” occurred 11 times, while non-vocal backchanneling, such as nodding, occurred once. Backchannels serve as short responses from the listener to indicate attention, agreement, or understanding. This study concludes that these elements play a crucial role in enriching the dynamics of political conversations on social media, enhancing interaction between speakers.

Abstract

This study explores the challenges faced in teaching speaking using a communicative approach at a bilingual primary school. The research aims to identify the obstacles teachers encounter while implementing communicative strategies in teaching speaking skills and how these challenges impact students' learning experiences. A qualitative research design was employed, using classroom observations, teacher interviews, and student surveys. The findings reveal that teachers face limited resources, large class sizes, and students' varying language proficiency levels. Moreover, the use of a communicative approach sometimes conflicts with traditional teaching methods that are still prevalent in the school system. Despite these challenges, the research highlights the importance of adapting the communicative approach to suit the bilingual context of the school. The study contributes to the field of education by offering insights into the practical implications of using communicative teaching methods in bilingual settings and provides recommendations for overcoming the challenges identified.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Extensive Reading approach in improving vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension among eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Silima Punggapungga. Employing Classroom Action Research (CAR), the research was conducted in two cycles, each comprising planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through pretests, posttests, student observations, and teacher reflections. The findings indicate a significant improvement in students' vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension. The mean vocabulary acquisition score increased from 50.78 in the pretest to 66.09 in Cycle 1 and 79.84 in Cycle 2. Similarly, reading comprehension scores rose from 51.25 in the pretest to 69.53 in Cycle 1 and 80.78 in Cycle 2. The results highlight the positive impact of Extensive Reading, particularly in enhancing students’ motivation, confidence, and independent learning habits. Students became more engaged in reading activities, demonstrated greater autonomy in learning, and exhibited a reduced reliance on translation. Despite these positive outcomes, challenges such as students' varying reading abilities and limited access to reading materials remain. Therefore, providing diverse and engaging reading resources and integrating technology-based reading platforms are recommended to support the sustainability of this approach. This study contributes to the growing body of research on language learning strategies, emphasizing the role of Extensive Reading in fostering literacy skills. Future research should explore its long-term impact and application in different educational settings to validate its effectiveness.

Abstract

This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach to examine Conversational Implicatures found in "The Silence of the Lambs" Movie using Grice's Cooperative Principle theory (1975). The objective of the study is to identify the prevalent type of Conversational Implicature and characterize its pattern of usage. The results indicate that Generalized Conversational Implicature (GCI) accounts for 42.2% of the total implicatures, while Particularized Conversational Implicature (PCI) represents 57.8%. Notably, Particularized Conversational Implicature emerges as the dominant type. The patterns identified within Generalized Conversational Implicature (GCI) are (1) conveying additional messages without needing to explain in detail or explicitly,(2) responses that do not require additional explanation, and (3) brief and succinct responses. However, Particularized Conversational Implicature patterns generated are (1) based on the specific context of the situation, (2) based on specific knowledge of the case and the context of the conversation, (3) use of cryptic language and allusions, (4) manipulation of hearing sympathy or understanding by sharing personal desires,(5) the psychological dynamics between the characters,(6) use of indirect questions.
