Abstract

Narrative writing allows students to demonstrate their ability to tell stories, apply grammatical knowledge, and use vocabulary creatively. This study aims to find out the graphological and lexicogrammatic constituency in narrative texts by 6th-semester students of HKBP Nommensen University. This study uses Halliday & Matthiesen's theory. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method; the instruments used in this research are observation and document analysis. The research data are in the form of narrative texts written by sixth-semester students. The study results found that most of the narrative text writing by 6th-semester students had a graphological and lexicogrammatical constituency. In the graphological constituency, some sentences total 58, and the sub-sentences have a total number of 122. In the lexicogrammatical constituency, there are complex clauses with a total number of 58, and the clauses have a total of 122. This means that from the findings of this study on graphological and lexicogrammatical analysis, the researcher found that students have sufficient/proficient writing skills because they use varied sentences, thus developing their ability to create sentence variations and cohesion in writing narrative texts.

Abstract

This study investigates how power relations influence the use of politeness strategies in direct communication within a hierarchical school environment. Grounded in Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory and the pragmatic perspective of speech acts, the research aims to identify the types and sub-strategies of politeness used by speakers, examine how hierarchical status affects linguistic choices, and interpret the implied meanings behind politeness in institutional interactions. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through natural conversations and contextual interviews involving participants at different managerial levels: headmaster, vice principals, teachers, students, and cleaning staff. The findings reveal a strong tendency toward negative politeness (82.70%), expressed through apology, hedging, deference, and indirectness, reflecting a heightened awareness of institutional hierarchy. Positive politeness (9.20%) appears in horizontal interactions emphasizing solidarity, while off-record politeness (8.10%) is used primarily by lower-status participants to minimize social risk. These patterns demonstrate that linguistic politeness functions as a pragmatic tool for negotiating power and maintaining harmony in the school context. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of language use in hierarchical educational environments and highlights the importance of strengthening pragmatic awareness among school personnel. Practically, the results imply the need for communication training programs that help teachers and school leaders develop respectful, effective, and context-sensitive communication practices.

Abstract

Abstract

This study, entitled “Translation Strategies in Translating Idioms in the Film of Wednesday (2022)” analyzes the strategies used to translate English idioms into Indonesian subtitles. Translation is the process of converting text or speech from one language to another, with a primary emphasis on accurately conveying meaning and cultural context. The purpose of this study is to determine the strategies used in translating idioms in the film Wednesday (2022) and to determine the dominant strategies used in translating idioms in the film Wednesday (2022). This study applies a qualitative research design with a descriptive approach to analyze the translation strategies used in translating idioms in the film Wednesday (2022). Using Mona Baker’s (1992) framework, the study identified 42 idioms and categorized them into five strategy types: Translation by a Phrase or Descriptive Expression, by a More General Word, by Cultural Substitution, by a More Neutral or Less Expressive Word, and Using Loan Words or Loan Plus Explanation. This qualitative descriptive research found that Translation by a Phrase or Descriptive Expression was the most dominant strategy (55%), followed by More General Word (19%), Cultural Substitution (14.2%), More Neutral or Less Expressive Word (9.5%), and Loan Words (2.3%). The frequent use of descriptive translation reflects the need for clarity and cultural adaptation in audiovisual media. The findings support Baker’s theory and show that translating idioms involves not only linguistic conversion but also attention to context, tone, and cultural nuances, especially in a series like Wednesday known for its dark humor and sarcasm.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of collaborative translation in enhancing student engagement and language development in translator education. The research addresses three questions: (1) how collaborative translation influences student engagement, (2) to what extent it improves language proficiency, and (3) what factors affect its effectiveness in classroom practice. Using a mixed-methods design, the study involved 20 sixth-semester students in an English Literature program at HKBP Nommensen University. Data were collected through classroom observations, a five-item Likert-scale questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, and pre- and post-tests assessing vocabulary, grammar, and translation accuracy. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively using mean comparisons, while qualitative data were examined through thematic analysis and triangulation across data sources. Results showed consistent improvement in language performance, with mean scores increasing from 68 to 80 in vocabulary, 70 to 82 in grammar, and 65 to 78 in translation accuracy, indicating moderate learning gains. Questionnaire and interview findings revealed increased participation, shared responsibility, and greater confidence during collaborative tasks. The effectiveness of the project was influenced by group interaction, lecturer feedback, student motivation, and the use of digital resources. Participation was voluntary, and informed consent was obtained from all participants. The findings suggest that collaborative translation supports process-oriented and socially mediated translation learning.
