Abstract

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a strategic food commodity that supports food security and the national economy. However, corn productivity on suboptimal land is often limited by low soil fertility due to acidity and aluminum (Al) toxicity. This study aimed to identify aluminum-tolerant corn varieties under AlCl₃ stress conditions and evaluate their growth and yield on suboptimal land with the addition of cow manure. The study was conducted in two stages. The first stage involved selecting aluminum-tolerant corn varieties using a nutrient culture with a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD), involving six corn varieties and two AlCl₃ concentrations (0 ppm and 180 ppm). The results of the first stage indicated that the P32, Bisi 18, and Lamuru varieties were classified as aluminum-tolerant, while the Sukmaraga variety was classified as sensitive but described as adaptable to acidic soils. The second stage was a field trial using a factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) with four selected corn varieties and three doses of cow manure. The data obtained were tested for F at a significance level of 5% if the Fhit value > F table and continued with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The results showed that two corn varieties (P32 and Bisi 18) provided the best growth, and the results were seen from the length of the cob, the number of cobs, the weight of peeled cobs, and the potential yield per hectare.

Abstract

Rice production in acidic soils is often limited by leaf blast disease and iron (Fe) toxicity. This study aimed to identify local rice genotypes cultivated in Solok Selatan that are tolerant to leaf blast disease and iron stresses at the vegetative stage. Ten rice genotypes, consisting of six local genotypes and four comparison genotypes, were tested under three levels of soil Fe content (11,393.12 ppm, 16,781.83 ppm, and 18,699.25 ppm) using a Completely Randomized Design with three replications. The observed variables were number of tillers, root length, leaf blast score, and Fe toxicity score. The results showed that Batang Piaman had the highest number of tillers (72.00), while Guliang Tandai Merah and Batu Hampar Putih had the longest roots (50.67 cm and 49.78 cm). Guliang Tandai Merah had the lowest leaf blast score (2.89), and together with Batang Piaman, also showed low Fe toxicity scores (3.56 and 3.22), indicating good tolerance. In contrast, Simauang and IR64 were the most susceptible against iron toxicity compared to other rice genotypes. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) explained 81.80% of the total variation and placed Batang Piaman and Cilamaya Muncul in the quadrant of high tolerance and good agronomic traits. Cluster analysis grouped the genotypes into three major clusters, with Guliang Tandai Merah and Batu Hampar Putih forming a distinct group based on strong root traits. Although no genotype was completely resistant, Batang Piaman and Guliang Tandai Merah are promising candidates for breeding programs targeting leaf blast and Fe toxicity tolerance.

Abstract

Rice is a major staple food for the Indonesian population, therefore, its productivity must be improved to accomplish the domestic consumption. Efforts to increase rice production in a sustainable manner in the future not only rely exclusively on lowland rice production but also from other genotypes including upland rice. West Sumatra is one of the province in Indonesia that preserves various local upland rice germplasm. The characterization of local upland rice genotypes to drought stress are required in order to support the increase of national rice production. This study aims was to obtain the West Sumatra local upland rice genotypes that are resistant to drought. The drought resistance screening was carried out in three ways, namely: 1) Testing of seed resistance with Polyethylene Glycol (PEG), 2) Testing of root penetration using a wax coating, and 3) Testing of proline content. From the study, two genotypes, namely: Susun Porti and Ladungan which have good resistance to drought.
