Abstract

Paliasa is one of tropical plants that used as an etnobotanical traditional drug by the people of South Sulawesi. Paliasa leaves is believed and used as a drug for hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cholesterol, and hepatitis diseases. Preliminary study was done by Brine shrimp lethality test with Artemia salina to a tissue part of one of type paliasa, Melocia umbellata (Houtt.) Stapf. var. degrabrata K. The result show that the wood of this plant is the most active with LC50 value of 1,80 ppm. Keywords : Paliasa, traditional drug, M. umbellata, bioactivity.

Abstract

The 4-hydroxycinnamamide  is a compound  that has been isolated from the root bark of Kleinhovia hospita Linn. The compound show high toxicity to Artemia salina Leach (IC 180,53 µg) so it can be expected has cytostatic activity against P388 leukemic cells. However, the concentration of the compound in the root bark of K. hospita Linn is very low (about 1.6 ppm), and commercially the compound  is  not  ready  and  has  never  been  synthesized.  Therefore,  it  is  important  to  find  out  a synthesis method to used in prepare the compound for further examination, in particular its cytostatic activity. By this research, the 4-hydroxycinnamamide compound has been prepared from 4- hydroxycinnamic  acid  via  esterification  reaction  with  excess  ethanol  and  sulphate  acid  catalyst followed  ammonolysis  reaction  with concentrated  ammonia.  The esterification  stage  gave  ethyl 4-hidroxycinnamate   as  white  crystall  with  melting  point  133-134oC   and  34.9%  yield,  and  the ammonolysis stage gave 4-hydroxycinnamamide as white crystall with merting point 140oC and 46.1% yield. Identification of the reaction product was carried out by FTIR and NMR spectroscopy methods. Keywords: 4-hydroxycinnamamide, 4-hydroxycinnamic acid, esterification, ammonolysis

Abstract

Determination of antibacterial activity of each extract of M. umbellata (Houtt.) Stapf var. K. degrabrata leaves has been conducted against three strains bacteria Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Shigella dysenteriae by using amoxicillin as a positive control and DMSO as a negative control. Agar diffusion method has been used with MHA medium (Muller Hinton Agar) on variation concentrations of each extract were 2500 ppm, 5000 ppm, 10,000 ppm, and 20,000 ppm N-hexane extract was the most active extract against S. aureus with zone of inhibitions were 10.50 mm, 10.80 mm, 11.00 mm and 11.45 mm, respectively. The most active extract against S. dysenteriae was ethyl acetate extracts with zone of inhibitions were 9.36 mm, 11.55 mm, 11.58 mm and 17.70 mm, respectively. Isolated compound from n-hexane extract was first compound as white powder with a melting point of 75-77 °C which was identified as 1-Tetracosanol and second compound was obtained in the form of a yellow paste which was identified as steroid compound that had long conjugated substituent. These compounds were elucidated based on the data of IR, UV-Vis, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR.

Abstract

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles is done by the chemical reduction method using the extract of leaves of catappa (Terminalia catappa) which acts as a reducing agent with the use of AgNO3 as the precursors. The results, based on changes in color, pH, and UV-Vis absorption shows color changes from yellow to yellow-brown with a pH of 4 indicating the formation of silver nanoparticles with a wavelength range from 412,50- 404,00 nm for the storage of the first day until the seventh day with a particle size 92,48 nm based on the results of taking the measurements of PSA. Analysis of functional groups that play a role in the synthesis using FT-IR. Characterization using XRD showed that the synthesized form a cubic crystal with a crystal size of 53,48 nm. Silver nanoparticles are used as a sunscreen with a blend of hydroxy cinnamic acid compounds. Testing activities determined sunscreen with SPF values were analyzed using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Results of testing the activity of sunscreen alloy nanoparticles of silver and hydroxy cinnamic acid (AHNP) with a concentration of 16 μg/mL - 20 μg/ml showed the consecutive SPF value 20,97; 24,71; 26,41; 28,07 and 31,92. Sunscreen AHNP activity increases with the concentration AHNP. Based on the research results can be concluded that the combination of ultra AHNP has a protective effect (SPF ≥ 15) against UV-B rays.

Abstract

A research on the characterization of the chloroform extract of leaves of M. umbellata (Houtt.) stapf var. degrabrata K. and activity test as antihyperglycemic has been done. This study aimed to isolate and characterize compounds from chloroform extract and determine the optimum concentration of chloroform extract in  reducing blood glucose levels. Isolation compound from chloroform extract has been done by maceration, fractionation and purification. Based on the data of IR and NMR spectroscopic, compounds isolated from this research were β-sitosterol and fatty acid compound consisting of 25 carbon atoms. The glucose tolerance test, concentration of 6% showed a decrease in glucose levels almost equivalent with drug glibenclamide as comparator.

Abstract

Some esters and amide derivatives of p-hydroxycinnamic acid have anticancer activity. However, the amide compound is more stable to metabolic reactions compared to its ester derivative. In this research, the synthesis of a new compound, namely N-(piperidinyl)caffeamide (M5) and its anticancer activity assay, has been conducted. The compound M5 was synthesized using p-hydroxycinnamic acid and piperidine as starting materials, and the activity assay was carried out against P388 Leukemia Murine Cells by the MTT method. By these methods, the compound M5 was obtained a yellowish crystalline with a melting point of 212-214°C, and it was very active as an anticancer with an IC50 value of 0.861 μg/mL. This compound was more active than the analog compounds previously synthesized.

Abstract

The synthesis of MCM-48 containing surfactants (CTAB and Triton X-100), ZnO, and CaO aimed to find a potential heterogeneous catalyst in the esterification of Calophyllum inophyllum oil to biodiesel. This research is important in the production of biodiesel from vegetable oils with more than 2% free fatty acids (FFA), such as Calophyllum inophyllum oil using heterogeneous catalysts. Synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts, MCM-48 and ZnO-MCM-48-CaO (ZMC), using the hydrothermal method at various calcination temperatures was conducted to find the optimum calcination temperature for the reaction. The activity of the catalyst in the reaction was determined using acid-base titration methods and GC-MS. The MCM-48 catalyst calcined at 650 °C (MCM-48/650) had a catalytic activity of 35.74% and was selective for converting linoleic acid in Calophyllum inophyllum oil to biodiesel. In addition, this catalyst was also capable of cracking the compounds contained in Calophyllum inophyllum oil into suitable hydrocarbons for biodiesel. In the esterification of vegetable oils, four heterogeneous catalysts (MCM-48/550, ZMC/550, ZMC/650, and ZMC/750) had the potential to replace conventional catalysts (H2SO4), particularly in the generation of biodiesel from Calophyllum inophyllum oil.
