Abstract

Abstract: Surabaya City has undergone rapid development characterized by changes in its physical form. A renowned Darmo heritage landscape has been experiencing such things. But none of the research had uncovered the morphological development of Darmo historic landscape. Even if, Darmo is a historic residential area and became the only masterwork in Surabaya by Henri Maclaine Pont, a renowned Dutch architect. Thus, the purpose of this study is to understand the Darmo Area further from the perspective of the area wholeness used in the urban morphological study by identifying the historical stages of morphological development. The strategy used is historical-interpretative which involves data collection methods of archival studies, literature studies, and in-depth interviews with experts. Meanwhile, the method of analysis used is historical diachronic analysis. The results of the study seemingly suggest that the Darmo Area has three major morphological stages, namely the pre and planning period, the development period, and extension. It shows the generative process of the area, and this can be the basis for historic urban landscape management. Hence, these morphological elements should be conserved altogether as urban morphology entities to ensure the unity of the Darmo historic landscape.

Abstract

Over time, significant changes in social, economic, and cultural aspects have profoundly influenced the function and meaning of heritage buildings. These buildings often undergo functional transformations while maintaining their historical forms, presenting challenges in preserving their architectural authenticity and historical value. The concepts of digital placemaking and Soft City theory offer potential approaches to support the preservation of heritage buildings, emphasizing community engagement and the revitalization of historical values without compromising physical authenticity. This study employs literature reviews and precedent analyses to explore how digital technology and adaptive design can meet user needs while preserving the cultural and historical significance of buildings. As a case study, the Kebon Rojo Post Office in Surabaya is analyzed through interviews and data synthesis to demonstrate the application of Soft City principles, such as optimizing the balance between open and closed spaces and utilizing digital technology to create interactive experiences. The findings show that the combination of digital placemaking and Soft City principles can produce hybrid spaces that enrich emotional and sensory connections, promote flexibility, and enhance community inclusivity. This approach integrates physical and digital elements to revitalize heritage buildings, keeping them relevant in the modern urban context. The study also highlights digital interventions such as augmented reality, adaptive lighting, and interactive digital platforms as effective tools to strengthen the cultural and historical value of heritage sites. These technologies enable more dynamic and interactive user engagement, breathing new life into heritage buildings without compromising their architectural authenticity in the digital era.

Abstract

Heritage buildings serve as vital markers of cultural identity, historical continuity, and collective memory within the urban landscape. Yet in the context of accelerating urban development, many of these sites suffer from declining relevance, physical neglect, and weakening emotional connections with contemporary communities. This study explores the potential of digital placemaking as an innovative approach to revitalize the cultural significance and public engagement of heritage buildings. By integrating digital technologies with architectural space, digital placemaking reimagines these structures as interactive, inclusive, and emotionally resonant environments that bridge past and present. Employing a qualitative research methodology, this study draws from literature reviews, site analysis, community narratives, and design conceptualization to formulate a framework that supports the transformation of underutilized heritage sites into dynamic public spaces. The research highlights the importance of memory, identity, and cultural resonance as central components of revitalization efforts, proposing a layered approach that merges physical preservation with meaningful digital engagement. The outcomes of this study offer both theoretical and practical contributions to the fields of architectural design and heritage conservation, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary, adaptive, and community-sensitive methods. This approach ensures that heritage buildings remain relevant, accessible, and culturally valuable in contemporary urban life.

Abstract

A humid tropical climate characterized by high temperatures, relative humidity and solar radiation results in uncomfortable environmental conditions. Discomfort will be worse if the building is in a dense urban area. Densely building masses often weaken the local wind speed which is necessary for evaporative cooling process in tropical climate. In addition, the narrow distance between buildings can reduce access to daylight. Both of these environmental problems were experienced by SDIT Al Uswah Surabaya, which building is located in a densely populated neighbourhood. Along with the development program of educational facilities and infrastructure at the school, improving environmental conditions with passive concept is maintained and prioritized. Embodiment of the environment with the Selective Environment approach is used in this activity. The results of this activity will be in the form of design proposals for improving ventilation and lighting in classrooms. The limitation of expanding openings becomes an obstacle in fulfilling the natural ventilation and lighting requirements. In addition, the design of a three-storey building with a single loaded corridor requires special consideration for the design of sun shading that is safe for elementary school-age children, but still supports passive lighting and ventilation.

Abstract

Urban sprawl is a phenomenon characterized by the accidental movement of residents from the downtown to the urban periphery. This urban sprawl phenomenon tends to hurt the urban boundary. The concept of spatial hybrid can indirectly be indicated as a form of sustainable urban development that overcomes the problems caused by the negative ImpactImpact of urban sprawl in the urban periphery. This study uses the constructivism paradigm. The strategy in this research is a combination of qualitative research and case studies. It specifically selected case studies in the area of Darmo Permai Surabaya-Indonesia. The Darmo Permai area is a form of urban sprawl that began in 1973. The Darmo Permai area finds harmony between the newcomer and residents through an adaptation process. This harmony is manifested in a hybrid space analyzed from the social aspect of sustainability. The hybrid space is founded based on the activities of its residents, which are characterized by five aspects of the hybrid space. The five aspects of the hybrid space are coexistence, transfusion, interconnection, ambivalence, and heterogeneity.

Abstract

Mobility contributes to the quality of life (Muller, 2016). In Indonesia, shopping centers and pedestrian spaces have not been supporting each other to accommodate public pedestrians. It lets people drive more automobiles instead of walking even though their settlements are convenient to the commercial places. This problem is further causing other matters such as traffic congestion, accidence, air-pollution, anxiety, and so on. By considering the problem, it is important to transform the design criteria of the modern shopping centers to be not only serving as a commercial destination but also space to provide mobility for public pedestrians in an urban environment. This research is aimed to identify the design criteria of modern shopping centers based on public pedestrian space. The criteria are expected to be a new standard for planning and designing future shopping centers in Indonesian cities. The Evaluative Method is utilized in this research involving a theory of Urban Mobility as the main parameter and three precedents as the objects. The similarities between the precedents could be considered as important design criteria that need to be formulated by utilizing aspects of the theory. As a result, the shopping centers should be designed as a complex of building masses to allow mobility for public pedestrians which need support by transit system and facility. Any integrated circulation with another building with different use also promotes pedestrian activity. The character of the building form or façade should be able to balance the rigid character of the surrounding urban area.

Abstract

Abstract

Pasar Bulu Semarang has experienced a decline in activity despite being revitalized, due to spatial integration issues, especially in terms of circulation, visibility, and connectivity to public transportation. Traditional market revitalization studies have rarely explored spatial strategies that integrate spatial programs. This study uses a force-based framework and design-by-research approach to examine disprogramming as a spatial design method that integrates markets with terminals. Through site observation, precedent studies, and literature reviews, ten main design criteria related to circulation, observability, and spatial flexibility were generated, which were analyzed in a spatial relationship matrix to identify potential program harmonization and contradictions. The results show that disprogramming is effective in creating adaptive and contextual hybrid public spaces. This study contributes a structured design framework for market revitalization strategies in dense urban areas.
