Abstract

A humid tropical climate characterized by high temperatures, relative humidity and solar radiation results in uncomfortable environmental conditions. Discomfort will be worse if the building is in a dense urban area. Densely building masses often weaken the local wind speed which is necessary for evaporative cooling process in tropical climate. In addition, the narrow distance between buildings can reduce access to daylight. Both of these environmental problems were experienced by SDIT Al Uswah Surabaya, which building is located in a densely populated neighbourhood. Along with the development program of educational facilities and infrastructure at the school, improving environmental conditions with passive concept is maintained and prioritized. Embodiment of the environment with the Selective Environment approach is used in this activity. The results of this activity will be in the form of design proposals for improving ventilation and lighting in classrooms. The limitation of expanding openings becomes an obstacle in fulfilling the natural ventilation and lighting requirements. In addition, the design of a three-storey building with a single loaded corridor requires special consideration for the design of sun shading that is safe for elementary school-age children, but still supports passive lighting and ventilation.

Abstract

This paper explores the initial stages of design from issues, context, to problems related to the development of real and virtual technology, especially the phenomenon of inhabitation in the library building. The aim of this design-based research is to increase motivation and learning effectiveness, as well as maintain the function of the physical library building in the future with integrative virtual technology. The data collection method uses literature reviews as secondary data, and naturalistic research methods as primary data to validate theory and produce aspects and principles of inhabitation in real and virtual contexts that can be applied in library.. The results of this research are the concept of imaginative space elements that represent inhabitation patterns in various interactions and atmospheres in library design. The benefit of the research is knowing how the integrative application of technology in libraries can improve and develop the function of reading and learning spaces interactively and effectively.

Abstract

Urban parks are integral components of Green Open Spaces (GOS) with a significant impact on community well-being. This study integrates urban parks with an active design approach to promote physical activity. The research aims to identify active design elements within Abhirama Park, located in Sidoarjo Regency. The choice of active design is based on previous research demonstrating its potential to encourage greater community engagement. The results of this identification and analysis can serve as a reference for future developments of Abhirama Park, with the goal of creating Green Open Spaces that stimulate physical activity in an era characterized by sedentary lifestyles driven by digital advancements. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, involving naturalistic exploration and in-depth examination of the subject. Active design guidelines are used as a framework during the observation and interview processes. The findings reveal the presence of four active design aspects in Abhirama Park: Accessibility, Facilities, Activities, and Management. Each aspect plays a distinct role in promoting physical activity within the urban context.

Abstract

Pasar Bulu Semarang has experienced a decline in activity despite being revitalized, due to spatial integration issues, especially in terms of circulation, visibility, and connectivity to public transportation. Traditional market revitalization studies have rarely explored spatial strategies that integrate spatial programs. This study uses a force-based framework and design-by-research approach to examine disprogramming as a spatial design method that integrates markets with terminals. Through site observation, precedent studies, and literature reviews, ten main design criteria related to circulation, observability, and spatial flexibility were generated, which were analyzed in a spatial relationship matrix to identify potential program harmonization and contradictions. The results show that disprogramming is effective in creating adaptive and contextual hybrid public spaces. This study contributes a structured design framework for market revitalization strategies in dense urban areas.
